Exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may influence telomere length (TL), which is considered as a marker of biological age associated with the risk of chronic disease. We hypothesized that dietary exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins could affect TL. Our aim was to evaluate the association of dietary exposure to PCBs and dioxins with TL. In this cross-sectional study of 886 subjects older than 55 y (mean age: 67.7; standard deviation (SD): 6.1; 27% women) from the “Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra” (SUN) project. TL was determined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and dietary PCBs and dioxins exposure was collected using a validated 136-item Food Frequency Questionnaire. Multivariable linear regression models were used to control for potential confounding factors. Shorter TL was associated with dietary total PCBs (SD of T/S ratio/(ng/day) = −0.30 × 10−7; 95% CI, −0.55 × 10−7 to −0.06 × 10−7), dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs) (SD of T/S ratio/(pg WHO TEQ (Toxic Equivalents)/day) = −6.17 × 10−7; 95% CI, −11.30 × 10−7 to −1.03 × 10−7), and total TEQ exposure (SD of T/S ratio/(pg WHO TEQ/day) = −5.02 × 10−7; 95% CI, −9.44 × 10−7 to −0.61 × 10−7), but not with dioxins (SD of T/S ratio/(pg WHO TEQ/day) = −13.90 × 10−7; 95% CI, −37.70 × 10−7 to 9.79 × 10−7). In this sample of middle-aged and older Spanish adults, dietary exposure to total PCBs and DL-PCBs alone and together with dioxins was associated with shorter TL. Further longitudinal studies, preferably with POPs measured in biological samples, are needed to confirm this finding.

Seafood and other environmental matrices are major entry route of harmful pollutants into humans due to constant contamination of the aquatic environment hence requires monitoring. This study scientifically explored the hypothesis that benthic gastropods bioaccumulate harmful pollutants that pose health risk to consumers of the sea food. Fifty samples of Thais coronata were collected per site from major regional fish landings. Two hundred samples were collected monthly for eight months to determine the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-PAH and possible health risks due to consumption using regulatory limits for guidance. Total PAH concentrations (μg/kg) varied between 65.68–173.52 suggesting differences in consumed concentrations at different times. The concentration of individual PAH congeners (1.376 ± 0.07-40.356±2.21 μg/kg) and PAH4 were below the European Union maximum limits. The Daily Dietary Intake values ranged from 0.075-2.212 μg/kg for individual PAH congeners while that of PAH4 was 1.359 μg/kg and were all below their respective reference oral doses. The carcinogenic potencies of the PAH congeners ranged from 0.001-143.389, the carcinogenic toxic equivalents (TEQs) of all PAH congeners was 0.1522 while that of PAH4 was 0.0044. The Excess cancer risk (ECR) value (10-8–10-5) was within USEPA guideline of 10-6 while the margin of exposure (MOE) of individual PAHs and PAH4 were higher than critical border line of 10,000 given by European Food Safety Authority but diagnostic ratio suggested PAH sources of pyrogenic origin in samples monitored. The study concluded low health risk for consumers of the shellfish (Thais coronata) in the study region but with recommendation advisory for regular monitoring to observe changes.

Abstract PCDDs /Fs were investigated in outdoor air of charcoal grilled meat-restaurants in Jordan. Restaurants were given the codes (S, Z, G, B, and J). Levels of PCDDs/Fs depend on the quantity of used charcoal, amount of grilled meat, and sampling season. Results in (ng TEQ/m3) found in the order: S restaurant (12.4) > J (3.4) > B (1.8) > G (1.6) > Z (0.2). Total emissions in (g TEQ / year) were in the order: S restaurant (1.295) > J (0.132) > B (0.092) > G (0.025) > Z (0.003). This study is the first of its kind in MENA region. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) concentrations were studied in outdoor air of charcoal grilled meat-restaurants in Amman/Jordan. The studied restaurants were given the codes (S, Z, G, B, and J). The PCDD/Fs compounds were extracted from the filter using the green extraction method called QuEChERS and detected in extracts using GC/MS. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs in the chimneys were found to depend on many factors that were measured such as type and quantity of grilling fuels, amount quantities of grilled food after marinating and sampling season. The results showed that PCDD/Fs concentrations in toxic equivalents (TEQs) in (ng TEQ/m3) were found in the following order: S restaurant (12.4) > J (3.4) > B (1.8) > G (1.6) > Z (0.2) where some samples contained 2, 3, 7, 8-TCDD in considerable amounts. The total emissions of PCDD/Fs in (g TEQ / year) for all restaurants samples were in the following order: S restaurant (1.295) > J (0.132) > B (0.092) > G (0.025) > Z (0.003). This study is featured as the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa that reveals the dangers of using charcoal for grilling because it causes contamination of food and air. It also calls for advising people to minimize the consumption of grilled food since food will contain a portion of the carcinogenic B (a) P and 2,3,7,8-TCDD and also advising for using filters for restaurant chimneys.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was tested for its ability to screen for PCDD/F in soils and sediments at 50, 1000 and 10,000 picograms toxic equivalents per gram of soil pgTEQ g-₁ (n=48, r²=0.994, slope=0.94). These results relied on two concepts developed in this thesis. The first, a congener correction factor, corrects ELISA results for differences in how ELISA and GC-HRMS calculate the dioxin content of a sample. The congener correction factor increased the correlation between ELISA and GC-HRMS TEQ values calculated using World Health Organization (WHO) toxic equivalency factors (TEF) from 83% to 94%. The correlation between ELISA and GC-HRMS TEQ values calculated using North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) TEF remained strong when the correction factor was applied, falling from 102% to 94%. The second concept, a sample algorithm allows ELIAS to efficiently measure unknown PCDD/F concentrations between 30 and 10,5000 pgTEQ g-¹. The algorithm successfully placed 24 of 28 samples into their correct concentration ranges in a maximum of two ELISA each. A cost analysis of using the algorithm predicted that ELISA can screen samples three times faster than GC-HRMS while at a 60% reduction in operating cost. The success of ELISA in conjunction with its time and cost savings indicate that it can replace GC-HRMS in situations where the high precision of GC-HRMS is not required.

Since ashes are a possible source of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) contamination, their application in soils must be subject to more study and control. In this scope, feed residual forest biomasses and biomass ashes, collected along one year in four biomass power stations, were characterized mainly for their polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) contents. The biomasses present concerning levels of Cl (0.04–0.28%) that may lead to PCDD/Fs formation. The biomasses also contain OCDD (29–260 ng/kg) and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD (35 ng/kg) that may contribute to increased Toxic Equivalents (TEQs) of ashes, possibly involving dechlorination and ash enrichment mechanisms. While the WHO2005-TEQs in bottom ashes (14–20 ng TEQ/kg) reaches the proposed limit (20 ng TEQ/kg) for ash use as fertilizers, in fly ashes (35–1139 ng TEQ/kg) the limit is exceeded. PAHs are below 0.02 mg/kg in bottom ashes and 1.5–2.5 mg/kg in fly ashes, complying with the proposed limit of 6 mg/kg. As bottom and fly ash streams may contain different ash flows, a clear definition of ash mixes is required. Correlations between unburned carbon (C), PAHs and PCDD/Fs were not found, which highlights the need for compulsory PCDD/Fs analysis in ashes, independently of their origin, burnout degree or levels of other contaminants. A sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the impact of handling non-detected values, which showed more impact for TEQs values close to the proposed regulatory limit of PCDD/Fs. These findings highlight the need to define reporting protocols of analytical results for risk assessments and conformity evaluation.

The aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and PM-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the combustion of various types of materials (i.e., oak, beech, and pine wood, polypropylene, polyurethane, paper, cotton, and oriented strand board (OSB)), and to compare the carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic potential of the emissions during the burning of these materials. Personal portable sampling devices were used to collect samples and to determine concentrations of PM4, total suspended particles (TSPs), PM-bound PAHs. The samples were collected during controlled fires under laboratory conditions. The highest PM concentration was recorded during the burning of polyurethane (PM4-1818 mg/m3, TSP-2800 mg/m3), while the highest concentration of PAH mixture was recorded when burning OSB (628.5 µg/m3 PM4-bound; 791.2 µg/m3 TSP-bound PAHs). Thus, the highest carcinogenic (85.5 µg/m3), mutagenic (68.2 µg/m3) and toxic equivalents (26.4 ng/m3) of the PAH mixture were noted during OSB combustion. Carcinogenic potential (CP) of PAH group was determined mainly by phenanthrene (CP on average 21.6%) and pyrene concentrations (13.3%). The results of the study express possible adverse effects from PM-bound PAHs released during combustion for firefighters and other people staying near a fire site.

Abstract In this research, the levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in the marine sediments of Asaluyeh harbor, in the Persian Gulf. The samples were taken from industrial, semi-industrial and urban regions. The mean concentration levels of total (Σ) 18 detected PCBs were 514.32, 144.67 and 31.6 pg/g dw for the industrial, semi-industrial and urban sampling stations, respectively. Based on a multivariate statistical analysis, it was found that high contamination levels of PCBs in sediments collected along the Persian Gulf were associated with releases from local industries. Total organic carbon (TOC) content was significantly and positively correlated with the concentrations of PCB congeners. World Health Organization toxic equivalents (TEQs) for PCBs ranged from 0.04 to 2.66 pg TEQ/g dry weight (dw) in the coastal sediments. The TEQ values in this study were higher than many reported worldwide in the literature for sediments. This suggests that there are high levels of contamination in the area due to industrial and other human activities.
