Abstract This article is concerned with the divinity of Allāh before Muḥammad. It is focussed on narrow and broad issues of method, and particularly on inferential evidence for the incidence and nature of this divinity on the evidence of Arabic poetry. It casts a critical look on retrojection Islamic theological concepts to the interpretation of earlier Arabic poetry, and proposes that the now common notion of “pagan monotheism” refers to no actually existing form of religious practice among pre-Muḥammadan Arabs. It reaffirms the salience of polytheism among the Arabs, and the pertinence of concrete historical evidence and of an anthropological sensibility in this domain. La présente étude porte sur une divinité nommée Allāh avant Muḥammad. Elle se concentre sur la question méthodologique des témoignages poétiques, sur l’envergure et la nature de cette divinité, et sur le contexte plus général des questions de méthode. Elle jette un regard critique sur la projection a posteriori des notions théologiques islamiques dans le cadre des analyses déductives fondées sur la matière poétique. Elle propose que l’idée, bien répandue dans des milieux universitaires, des « monothéistes païens » parmi les Arabes ne fait pas référence à la réalité historique des pratiques religieuses des Arabes avant Muḥammad. Elle souligne l’importance du polythéisme chez les Arabes et la pertinence décisive des données historiques concrètes et d’une sensibilité anthropologique dans ce domaine.

In studies of cumulative cultural evolution in non-human animals, the focus is most often on incremental changes that increase the efficacy of an existing form of socially learned behaviour, such as the refinement of migratory pathways. In this paper, we compare the songs of different species to describe patterns of evolution in the acoustic structure of bird songs, and explore the question of what building blocks might underlie cumulative cultural evolution of bird song using a comparative approach. We suggest that three steps occurred: first, imitation of independent sounds, or notes, via social learning; second, the formation of categories of note types; and third, assembling note types into sequences with defined structures. Simple sequences can then be repeated to form simple songs or concatenated with other sequences to form segmented songs, increasing complexity. Variant forms of both the notes and the sequencing rules may then arise due to copy errors and innovation. Some variants may become established in the population because of learning biases or selection, increasing signal efficiency, or because of cultural drift. Cumulative cultural evolution of bird songs thus arises from cognitive processes such as vocal imitation, categorization during memorization and learning biases applied to basic acoustic building blocks. In decision-making problems, the researchers’ application of parametric tests is the first choice due to their wide applicability, reliability, and validity. The common parametric tests require the validation of the normality assumption even for large sample sizes in some cases. Jarque-Bera test is among one of the methods available in the literature used to serve the purpose. One of the Jarque-Bera test restrictions is the computational limitations available only for the data in exact form. The operational procedure of the test is helpless for the interval-valued data. The interval-valued data generally occurs in situations under fuzzy logic or indeterminate state of the outcome variable and is often called neutrosophic form. The present research modifies the existing statistic of the Jarque-Bera test for the interval-valued data. The modified design and operational procedure of the newly proposed Jarque-Bera test will be useful to assess the normality of a data set under the neutrosophic environment. The proposed neutrosophic Jarque-Bera test is applied and compared with its existing form with the help of a numerical example of real gold mines data generated under the fuzzy environment. The study’s findings suggested that the proposed test is effective, informative, and suitable to be applied in indeterminacy compared to the existing Jarque–Bera test.

SummaryThere are at least two distinct types of thermogenic adipocyte in mammals: a pre-existing form established during development, termed classical brown adipocytes and an inducible form, ‘beige’ adipocytes1–3. Various environmental cues can stimulate a process frequently referred to as ‘beiging’ of white adipose tissue (WAT), leading to enhanced thermogenesis and obesity resistance 4, 5. Whilst beiging of WAT as a therapeutic goal for obesity and obesity-related complications has attracted much attention6–9; therapeutics stimulating beiging without deleterious side-effects remain elusive10. The endothelium lines all blood vessels and is therefore in close proximity to all cells. Many studies support the possibility that the endothelium acts as a paracrine organ11–14. We explored the potential role of endothelial insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) as a paracrine modulator of WAT phenotype. Here we show that a reduction in endothelial IGF-1R expression in the presence of nutrient excess leads to white adipocyte beiging, increases whole-body energy expenditure and enhances insulin sensitivity via a non-cell autonomous paracrine mechanism. We demonstrate that this is mediated by endothelial release of malonic acid, which we show, using prodrug analogues, has potentially therapeutically-relevant properties in the treatment of metabolic disease.

This article is concerned with the meaning of education for Santal and Munda communities, living in the Barind region. The aim of this paper is to document the narratives of Adivasis’ on education. What do they mean by education? What kind of situation did they experience in formal education? How they respond to the existing form of education. The article is written based on ethnographic material drawn from 8/9 months of frequent visit in the field of study. Data was collected by using semi-structured questionnaire, observation and participation. To Adivasis of Santal and Munda communities, education means to fight the mainstream society back, to act confidently, erase the stereotypical images they are labelled by the dominant group, and to get freedom from poverty; aspirations to overcome the conditions of graduated sovereignty and cultural politics. To consider the qualitative matter of social mobility, namely the aspiration in both the individual and community levels, the article proposes to look beyond the existing dominant analytical frame of educational access and exclusion. The analytical tools were developed following Appadurai’s concept of aspiration and Ong’s idea of graduated sovereignty. This article is a critical assessment of the marginal communities’ formal education and development and will contribute to ethnographic intervention in social anthropology and development studies, and contemporary debate on politics of education. To get an insight into the residual sodium content of Al–Mg alloys, three types of sodium-containing fluxes were introduced into the melt with different magnesium content. The increment, existing form and distribution of sodium in Al–Mg alloys with different magnesium content were analyzed. The results show that the influence of different sodium salts on the increment of sodium in Al–10Mg alloy is significantly different. The NaF raised the sodium level in Al–10Mg alloy to the highest extent, Na3AlF6 coming second, and NaCl did not have an obvious influence. The magnesium element in the aluminum melt was found to be the key factor leading to the increment of sodium level. After the salt fluxing treatment of aluminum alloy with different magnesium content, this increment would be proportional to the content of magnesium. EDS mapping indicates the sodium introduced by the fluxes was distributed in the form of Na-rich particles in Al–Mg alloys and preferentially located near Al3Mg2(β) phase in the situation of high magnesium content.

‘Therapy using pluripotent stem cells’ examines some of the diseases that have been the first to be treated by cell therapy using pluripotent stem cells as the source material. Proposed cell therapies involve making the required differentiated cells in vitro and then implanting them into the appropriate site in the patient. The biggest success story so far is the treatment of the retina for a condition called age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). Diabetes is one of the top targets for cell therapy based on pluripotent stem cells, building on an existing form of cell therapy called islet transplantation.

<p><em>This research examined Covid-19 from the perspective of legal and health protection by regional governments. Generally, regional governments are at the front line in protecting communities in this autonomy era due to their constitutional obligations. Data also shows that the creative economy actors in the micro, small, and medium business sector constitute over 90% of the workforce, necessitating their protection. This research used empirical-juridical research with an interdisciplinary approach examined the legislation and the community's reality. A Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was conducted with relevant stakeholders and creative economy business actors in Surakarta, Bandung, and Madiun cities. Furthermore, concepts of legal, health, and economic theories were reviewed to formulate a regional government policy draft regarding these business actors during the Covid-19 emergency. The results showed an existing form of legal protection regulation related to health and the economy at the national level. However, three big cities (Bandung, Madiun, and Surakarta) representing three provinces  as research objects are yet to provide regional regulations concerning protection for creative economy actors, though the local government has encouraged an increase in their activities</em></p>
