To better understand travel and hospitality consumers’ purchasing behavior amidst a worldwide emergency commonly referenced as COVID-19, the present research set out to assess the impacts of sensation-seeking, consumer affect, and risk-taking attitude on consumers’ willingness to purchase travel-related activities. A sample of 775 adult U.S. consumers were recruited with the help of a professional research consulting company. Simple and multiple regression analyses were performed for the purpose of hypotheses testing. Results demonstrate that individuals with higher sensation-seeking levels, lower negative affectivity, and who identify themselves as risk-takers are more willing to engage in various travel and commercial hospitality activities. Furthermore, sensation-seeking proves to be the most influential factor in driving consumers’ willingness to purchase amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors conclude by proposing a typology (illustrated in two different grids) of consumers based on their levels of sensation-seeking (high vs. low), affect (positive vs. negative), and risk-taking attitude (high vs. low). Theoretically, the model helps predict which consumers are most likely to engage in travel-related activities despite of the challenges posed by global pandemics.

In addition to the obvious public confusion and lack of distinction between the terms, risk and uncertainty and other related concepts, the interchangeable use seems to seep into the academic and professional research. According to a 2018 study by De Groot and Thurik, it was reported that 88.3% of articles in this topic, across the related fields, did not adhere to the distinction between risk and uncertainty, rendering all the undesirable theoretical and empirical consequences. This paper is intended to revisit the concepts of risk and uncertainty, not only clarifying the meaning and use of the terms, but also shedding a light on differentiating all the related concepts. The focus is on risk, being the core element directly related to the success and failure of all financial and managerial decision making. The approach is not only conceptual, but also supported by mathematical and numerical applications.

The authors present student self-reported learning gains from two undergraduate courses that embed research within study abroad courses. Students in one course worked in small groups on original research projects; students in the second course collectively contributed to one ongoing, professional research project. Differences in student learning between courses raise questions about the relationship of course structures to high-impact practices.

PurposeTo describe the implicit epistemic flaw of “confirmation bias” and to illustrate and evaluate the threats to qualitative research trustworthiness from that bias.Design/methodology/approachThe article overviews evidence and analysis from a wide range of disciplines. The adverse effect of three varieties of confirmation bias is described in some detail in illustrative examples.FindingsIt is argued that the threats from the bias go to the heart of the research. A subsequent article summarizes and critiques counter-arguments.Practical implicationsDiscussions and illustrations of varieties of confirmation bias can increase awareness of the unwitting bias and reduce its influence.Social implicationsThe bias not only threatens the trustworthiness of academic and other professional research but also underpins much ideological extremism, the effectiveness of post-truth politics and inter- and intra-group conflict. These are directly discussed in the article.Originality/valueThe article extends and enriches descriptions of threats to the trustworthiness of qualitative from confirmation bias. Such threats are inadequately recognized in many qualitative research arenas. It identifies a previously unrecognized variety of confirmation bias: hollow citations.

After the reissue of Journal of Silk, the historical papers published can reflect the academic history of Chinese Textile and Apparel History research. The mathematical analysis of these papers is helpful to clarify the territory and important towns of the research on Chinese Textile and Apparel History. Through literature collation and mathematical analysis, the paper believes that: ① The changes in the types of historical papers in Journal of Silk, especially the decline in the amount of papers published by corporate personnel, indicate that the Journal has transformed from a journal that integrates education, academia, and training into an academic publication. ② For a long time, authors from Zhejiang and Jiangsu have published more than half of the papers. This phenomenon is related to the earliest research on historical theory in the two places, especially the Zhejiang Silk Institute of Technology, which was the first organization to engage in professional research on historical theory in China. ③ Authors in Zhejiang Province had the largest number of papers before 2003. But after 2004, authors in Jiangsu had the largest number of papers. And after 2004, authors in Shanghai had more papers published, which is related to the strengthening of relevant majors by Suzhou University, Jiangnan University and Donghua University. At the same time, the experience of Jiangnan University shows that restricting the graduation conditions for master's students is conducive to research in the field of Historical Theory.
