Abstract OBJECTIVE To replicate a previously defined behavioral procedure to acclimate adult cats to temporary restriction in indirect calorimetry chambers and measure energy expenditure and respiratory quotient changes during acclimation. ANIMALS 8 healthy adult cats (4 spayed females, and 4 neutered males; mean ± SEM age, 2.5 ± 1.5 years; mean body weight, 4.8 ± 1.8 kg). PROCEDURES Cats underwent a 13-week incremental acclimation procedure whereby cats were acclimated to the chambers in their home environment (weeks 1 to 3), to the study room (weeks 4 to 6), and to increasing lengths of restriction within their home environment (weeks 7 to 8) and the chambers (weeks 9 to 13). Cat stress score, respiratory rate, fearfulness (assessed with a novel object test), energy expenditure, and respiratory quotient were measured. Data were analyzed by use of a repeated-measures mixed model. RESULTS Stress, based on cat stress scores, fearfulness, and respiration, peaked at weeks 4, 9, and 10 but returned to baseline levels by week 11. Energy expenditure and respiratory quotient peaked at weeks 10 and 11, respectively, but were reduced significantly by weeks 11 and 13, respectively. All cats returned to baseline by the end of the study and were deemed fully acclimated. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Changes in perceived stress level, energy expenditure, and respiratory quotient at various stages of the acclimation procedure suggest that stress should be considered a significant variable in energy balance measurements when indirect calorimetry is used in cats. An incremental acclimation procedure should therefore be used to prepare cats for the temporary space restriction necessary for indirect calorimetry studies.

Capsule endoscopy of the gastrointestinal tract is an innovative technology that serves to replace conventional endoscopy. Wireless capsule endoscopy, which is mainly used for small bowel examination, has recently been used to examine the entire gastrointestinal tract. This method is promising for its usefulness and development potential and enhances convenience by reducing the side effects and discomfort that may occur during conventional endoscopy. However, capsule endoscopy has fundamental limitations, including passive movement via bowel peristalsis and space restriction. This article reviews the current scientific aspects of capsule endoscopy and discusses the pitfalls and approaches to overcome its limitations. This review includes the latest research results on the role and potential of capsule endoscopy as a non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic device.

Overcapacity of seaport infrastructure has been a common issue in many countries in recent years. Cautious investment decisions shall be made on the basis of realistic capacity evaluation and productivity improvement of existing ports. However, operational analysis and evaluation of a seaport is not always easy, especially for multipurpose terminals which are commonly seen in developing countries. These small-scaled multipurpose seaports handle different cargo types with multiple interrelated processes and varying handling methods and process times. This paper studies a single-berth multipurpose seaport with wharf space restriction in Indonesia and shows how the simulation model can be essential and significantly helpful in the evaluation of the port’s productivity and realistic capacity. Furthermore, a new handling method is proposed and evaluated by the simulation model. The simulation approach and related results help the port operator in making decisions regarding port improvement and future expansion investments.

The effect of hydration space on cement hydration is essential. After a few days, space restriction affects the hydration kinetics which dominate the expansion, shrinkage and creep of cement materials. The influence of space restriction on the hydration products of tricalcium silicate was studied in this paper. The microstructure, morphology and composition of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) were explored from the perspective of a specific single micropore. A combination of Raman spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were employed. The results show that space restriction affects the structure of the hydration products. The C-S-H formed in the micropores was mainly composed of Q3 silicate tetrahedra with a high degree of polymerization. The C-S-H formed under standard conditions with a water to cement ratio of 0.5 mostly existed as Q2 units. Space restriction during hydration is conducive to the formation of C-S-H with silica tetrahedra of a high polymerization degree, while the amount of water filling the micropore plays no obvious role on the polymeric structure of C-S-H during hydration.

Abstract In a 72-day trial, 256 pigs (Line 600 × 241, DNA Columbus, NE) were used to determine the effect of dietary Cr (Cr propionate; Kemin Industries, Des Moines, IA) and physical space restriction on performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs. Pens were blocked by initial weight and randomly assigned to treatments with eight pigs per pen and eight pens per treatment. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial with main effects of Cr (control and Cr propionate, 200 µg/kg added Cr) and space allowances (0.91 m²/animal: normal and 0.63 m²/animal: restricted). Pigs were fed in three dietary phases and pigs were weighed approximately every 14 days throughout the study. Feed efficiency was calculated as both a standard gain to feed ratio and as an adjusted G:F ratio at a common final bodyweight. There were no evidence of space allocation × Cr interactions for any measured responses (P > 0.05). Space restriction decreased (P < 0.001) daily weight gain, final body weight, hot carcass weight, and daily feed intake, but increased carcass yield (P = 0.009) and decreased backfat depth (P = 0.003). Feed efficiency was greater for pigs provided a normal space allowance when adjusted for a common final bodyweight (P = 0.021), although no evidence of a difference was observed for unadjusted G:F (P = 0.687). Adding Cr to the diet reduced G:F on both an adjusted and unadjusted basis (P ≤ 0.021). There was marginally significant evidence that pigs provided Cr had lower average daily gain (P = 0.079) and final bodyweight (P = 0.056) compared to pigs not provided added Cr. There was marginally significant evidence that Cr resulted in greater backfat depth (P = 0.069), although no evidence of a difference in other carcass parameters were observed (P > 0.10). These results demonstrated that there were no interactions between Cr propionate and space allocation, illustrating that under the conditions of this study Cr propionate did not provide an advantage in growth performance or carcass characteristics in either adequate or restricted space allocation.

Translation technique typology indicates a lack of specific technique to evoke playful nuance – ludification. We argue that ludification might also serve as a translation technique in video game translation context. This research attempts to prove the presence of ludification translation technique. To do so, we analyzed nine PC, console, mobile, and online games from various genres and developers under the umbrella of qualitative design. The theories of lability and merrines by Huizinga, ludification of digital media by de Lange et al, and skopos by Reiss and Vermeer were applied in the analysis. The findings reveal that ludification as a translation technique is existent. This type of translation technique is made possible due to the carte blanche of video game translators. The findings also indicate that ludification as a translation technique has a distinctive typology, making it different from the other translation techniques. First, it breaks translation rules and standards to generate contextual merriness. Second, it has explanative and expressive functions. Third, it has subtypes, namely emojization, referencing, and para-localization. This study implies that the scholars of translation studies might apply this typology not only on game translation context but also audiovisual context like subtitling especially fansub, where carte blanche and creativity are required to deal with the space restriction.

Homeless children are unique and creative individuals. Most of the time these homeless children are based in the city center, however, they are often marginalized from the limelight. The homeless children need to be given the opportunity and the choice to improve their potential. The street corners of Banjarmasin are not the ideal home for these children. The Youth Development Center is the place to develop the potential of homeless children through creative fields with a sense of home in the design. It will be the hub for these children to express themselves through their creations and receive the opportunity to learn more without the space restriction. The Youth Development Center can also be a place for society to appreciate the homeless children’s potential. The design strategy uses the Third Place method as a space for interaction and solution of problems using the concept of Flexible Architecture so that space is defined not only by its function but by the potential of the space itself.
