The subject of the book is the history of citizenship in its twofold meaning: as a legally defined, formal status of belonging to a (nation) state, i.e. nationality, as well as a bundle of rights and obligations associated with the status of citizenship. The book reveals the transformation of citizenship by examining the connection between its two aspects and the struggles for belonging behind them. Citizenship in this broad sense is examined in its development since the beginning of the twentieth century while concentrating on five key questions: First, to what extent is citizenship a measuring rod for inclusion and exclusion? Second, does the change of politico-social constellations better explain the development of citizenship than idioms of nationhood? Third, does citizenship confirm the thesis of a legal development gap between Western and Eastern Europe? Fourth, how is citizenship in Europe shaped by repercussions of European colonialism? Fifth, how does citizenship serve as a legal tool to establish social ranking of groups, particularly of women and Jews, in European societies?

Demographically diverse leader-member relationships are predominantly studied based on similarity-attraction theory. However, empirical research examining the effect of similarity and dissimilarity on leader-member exchange (LMX) quality has resulted in inconsistent findings. I propose a new theoretical model which suggests that the LMX quality of demographically diverse leader-member dyads is affected by informal and formal status and power inequalities. My propositions, which lead to different outcomes than those of similarity-attraction theory, draw primarily upon social dominance theory and show how inequalities in demographic status and power and in positional status and power intertwine to affect LMX quality. Theoretical contributions and future research opportunities are discussed.

The 2020 College guidelines for mood disorders banish bipolar II disorder – despite its formal status in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and International Classification of Diseases manuals for more than two decades – and argue that there is no need to partition bipolar disorder into separate sub-types. Their single-entity model is seemingly based on opinion rather than any support from referenced scientific studies. The author challenges the Committee’s model of there being only one bipolar disorder and argues that it presents several clinical management risks, particularly of ‘over-treatment’.

AbstractThis paper aims to discuss the dynamic intersection between the spatial barriers and the tendency of the utilization of "mediated citizenship" by villagers in accessing public services. It is important to map out how villagers interact with authoritative service providers at the local government level, which is not done directly, but through the mediation of a third party, namely a local NGO that is implementing a program in their village. Based on the context of Oi Bura Village, the tendency of the utilization of mediator services of  "LAKPESDAM PCNU Kabupaten Bima" in accessing public services (especially the residential identities) began to take shape because it was triggered by the poor people's consideration about the spatial stretch of their village area with the site of the service provider that would have an impact on financial expenses and bureaucratic severity factors that must be passed when accessing these basic services. Although the residential identities should be obtained automatically based on formal status as an Indonesian citizen, in practice the access of the poor villagers to basic services is achieved through a third party mediation role. The limitations of the service providers' responsiveness, accountability and institutional capacity to act proactively in solving the public problems are increasingly opening up the chance for "permanence" of facilitation of the state-citizen interaction by third parties.

The article analyzes the factors that determined the formal status and the actual "power" of monasteries in Medieval Russia. It is noted that, basically, the set of factors was the same for different monasteries. It included the status and wealth of inhabitants and supporters, prominent religious personalities among former inhabitants, the monastery's history, and shrines in possession. The only thing that was different is the degree of impact of the factors. For example, the dominant status of the Nativity of the Virgin Monastery in Vladimir, being ranked first in the formal "hierarchy" of Russian monasteries (the second after 1561), was determined by two factors. The first one is the age of the monastery. Placed in the medieval capital of the North-Eastern Rus' and the Grand Duchy of Vladimir, it was founded much earlier than other essential Russian monasteries that existed in the 16th century: Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, Novospassky Monastery, Chudov Monastery, Simonov Monastery, Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, Pafnutiev Borovsky Monastery, and Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery. The second factor was the emphasis that the church and political authorities laid upon the personality of Alexander Nevsky who essentially established the dynasty of the Moscow princes. It was done specifically to enhance the dynasty's prestige. And, since the veneration of Prince Alexander was not yet widespread in the 16th century, the Nativity of the Virgin Monastery in Vladimir holding his ossuary dominated at the time. Thus, the monastery was under close attention from the Moscow church and authorities.

This chapter is dedicated to an overview of the ways the internal tension model operates to empower the executive branch, simultaneously under law and beyond its confines; the maintenance of the internal tension between the need to grant power and the need to retain a façade of legality, is achieved through practices under which an authorizing rule may present a façade of legality that derives from its binding formal status, while its content or application offer broad options for action (and possible abuse) which conceals a reality of a-legality. Beyond general and philosophical studies of the indeterminacy of law, the scholarship in this context has been conducted under the parallel paths discussed in this chapter (delegation and discretion; ‘soft law’; ‘fuzzy law’; and ‘grey holes’. The second part of the chapter is dedicated to an analysis of thirteen types of such fuzzy/grey legal constructs, organized according to the identity of their generators—the constitution, the legislature, and the executive. The resulting taxonomy of thirteen different forms of fuzziness offers a basis for the next part of this book, dedicated to case-studies of several such fuzzy measures.

The publication deals with the interaction of religions in the Evenki society since the 17th century. The author considers the process of Christianization of various Evenki groups, among whom the spread of the influence of the new religion was significantly different. The reasons for the formal status of the Christian religion among the majority of Evenk groups are outlined. Information about the history of the penetration of Buddhism into the environment of the Evenks of Transbaikalia is given, which is associated with the acquisition of ethnographic traditions of cattle breeding in close cultural relationships with Mongolian groups and clans. The reasons for the loss of the traditions of Evenk shamanism, associated with the repressive state policy in the 1930-40s, are indicated and the degradation of the cultural traditions of the ethnos in the second half of the 20th century. The article presents a picture of worldview and religious preferences in modern Evenk society, characterized by the coexistence of atheistic, Christian, Buddhist, and pagan (shamanic) views...

The extant genera and subgenera of the order Scolopendromorpha are critically reviewed and provided with updated diagnoses and a new identification key; the most recent revisions of scolopendromorph genera are concisely summarised. Rhoda Meinert, 1886 and Cryptops (Chromatanops) Verhoeff, 1906 are suggested to be a junior synonyms of Scolopendropsis Brandt, 1841 and Cryptops (Cryptops) Leach, 1814, respectively. The subgeneric status is formally fixed for Cryptops (Paracryptops) Pocock, 1891 and Cormocephalus (Campylostigmus) Ribaut, 1923; the taxonomic status of the former genus Kanparka Waldock & Edgecombe, 2012 is discussed. As a result of synonymies, the number of scolopendromorph genera and subgenera is currently 37. The formal status of the former tribes Scolopendrini Leach, 1814, Asanadini Verhoeff, 1907 and Arrhabdotini Attems, 1930 is briefly discussed; the presence of the sexual dimorphism among the taxa of generic level is overviewed.

The article analyzes the rights and obligations of state peasants following the reform of P.D. Kiselev, one of the aims of which was to bring the real situation of this category of the population into line with their formal status as free peasant peasants. The personal and property rights of peasants are examined as well as their implementation under the new system of government; duties, most importantly, the payment of numerous duties and obligations. The authors concluded that the reformers were not able to achieve the desired results. The situation of state peasants was better than that of other categories of peasants. However, they did not become truly free peasants before the reform of 1866.
