AbstractSeparation related disorder in dogs is a multi-faceted phenomenon. Dogs can react to the absence of their owner due to different inner states such as fear, panic or frustration. We hypothesized that dogs that are prone to frustration or fearfulness in other contexts would show a different behavioral response to separation from the owner. We investigated the association between inner states in different contexts and separation behaviors by combining a questionnaire with a separation test. Fear-related questionnaire components were rather associated with whining and the absence of barking. Dogs that received higher scores in the demanding component of the questionnaire, which might be in association of the frustration threshold of the dog, barked more and were more likely to scratch the door. Finally, dogs that were more prone to phobic reactions whined somewhat more and tried to escape. We provide empirical support for the assumption that separation-related behavioral responses of dogs might be triggered by different emotions.

Abstract In order to obtain a kind of superhydrophobic sponge with high oil and water selectivity, the MS/TiO2/PDMS sponge were prepared via a two-step hydrophobic fabrication based on the melamine sponge (MS), tetrabutyl titanate (TBOT) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The effects of modification time, the concentrations of TBOT and PDMS on the properties of the MS/TiO2/PDMS sponge were studied, and the separation mechanism was also discussed based on the interaction between the oil and the surface of the MS/TiO2/PDMS sponge. The results suggest that under optimal conditions, the MS/TiO2/PDMS sponge show superhydrophobicity. The contact angle and adsorption capacity for oil of the MS/TiO2/PDMS sponge are 149.2° and 98.5 g·g−1, respectively, and they can be recycled about 25 cycles after oil-water separation test. This study aims at preparing a new composite material with high oil-water selectivity, which lays a good foundation for the development and research of new oil adsorbent.

Maternal-offspring communication and care are essential for offspring survival. Oxytocin (OXT) is known for its role in initiation of maternal care, but whether OXT can rapidly influence maternal behavior or ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs; above 50 kHz) has not been examined. To test for rapid effects of OXT, California mouse mothers were administered an acute intranasal (IN) dose of OXT (0.8 IU/kg) or saline followed by a separation test with three phases: habituation with pups in a new testing chamber, separation via a wire mesh, and finally reunion with pups. We measured maternal care, maternal USVs, and pup USVs. In mothers, we primarily observed simple sweep USVs, a short downward sweeping call around 50 kHz, and in pups we only observed pup whines, a long call with multiple harmonics ranging from 20 kHz to 50 kHz. We found that IN OXT rapidly and selectively enhanced the normal increase in maternal simple sweep USVs when mothers had physical access to pups (habituation and reunion), but not when mothers were physically separated from pups. Frequency of mothers’ and pups’ USVs were correlated upon reunion, but IN OXT did not influence this correlation. Finally, mothers given IN OXT showed more efficient pup retrieval/carrying and greater total maternal care upon reunion. Behavioral changes were specific to maternal behaviors (e.g. retrievals) as mothers given IN OXT did not differ from controls in stress-related behaviors (e.g. freezing). Overall, these findings highlight the rapid effects and context-dependent effect a single treatment with IN OXT has on both maternal USV production and offspring care.

Abstract During the landing and detection missions of the Moon, Mars, and asteroids, due to the complexity and unpredictability of the landing process, it is necessary and critical to carry out simulation tests on the ground to simulate the stress state during the separation of the backshell from the lander. A high-speed cable-driven mechanism adopted. The cable force is different at the end actuator and the drum. There are many factors causing this difference, such as high acceleration, cable stiffness, cable density, cable length. In this paper, the cable force transmission of spacecraft during high-speed separation is studied. The dynamic model of high-speed cable-driven mechanism is established based on Newton principle, then the trial function is introduced, and the second-order partial differential equation is solved by using the method of space discretization. The force relationship of the cable in the process of motion is obtained, and the influencing factors of the cable force are explored. Finally, the correctness of the research content in this paper is verified by numerical simulation and experiment. The results show that the model can accurately simulate the force state of the cable, and it has guiding significance for the active high-speed separation test of spacecraft.

To reduce costs associated to ex vitro adaptation of arrow cane (Gynerium sagitatum Aubl.) plants Cv “Criolla”, the effect of three substrate mixes (Peat, peat + river sand and peat + rice husk) on survival, plant height and substrate associated plant cost were evaluated. Plants were micropropagated in semisolid MS medium supplied with 0,5 mg L-1 BAP. After medium removal, plants were transferred on 72-plug plastic trays filled with the respective substrate treatment. Trays were covered with translucent plastic covers during three days. Thereafter, plants were maintained in a 50% light shade house, fog irrigated twice a day for 1 minute each during 8 weeks. Treatments were distributed with a block randomized design. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and means were separated with Tukey´s mean separation test. Results allowed to evidence that peat + sand resulted in significant increase in survival, plant height and >35 decrease in substrate associated plant cost during adaptation to ex vitro conditions.

Acrylamide with a double bond and amide group can not only copolymerize with macromolecules of crumb rubber but also react with acidic groups in asphalt, so it was selected as a modifier to activate crumb rubber through chemical graft action. The purpose is to improve the compatibility between crumb rubber and asphalt and thus improve the rheological properties and storage stability of rubber asphalt. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the crumb rubbers and their modified asphalt. It was found that the crumb rubber of grafting acrylamide had better compatibility in asphalt due to its larger specific surface area and chemical reaction with asphalt. In addition, the high temperature rheological test, low temperature creep test, and polymer separation test were carried out to study the effect of grafted activated crumb rubber on the properties of modified asphalt. The results showed that compared with modified asphalt with common crumb rubber (CRMA), the rheological properties and storage stability of modified asphalt with grafting activated crumb rubber (A–G–R) were improved significantly. The results of microscopic and macroscopic tests show that the activated rubber particles have a larger contact area with asphalt due to a rougher surface and the chemical cross-linking between rubber particles and asphalt further strengthens their interaction. Therefore, there is a relatively stable blend system formed in modified asphalt, and its performance of modified asphalt has been improved.
