Low energy availability in athletes is an insufficiently researched phenomenon due to lack of a universal methodology. Current objective and subjective methods for assessing low energy availability lack in accuracy, are not used with a standardized approach and fail to provide comparable, consistent results. Research in male athletes is even more challenging than in females. It is still not known what the threshold for low energy availability is when negative effects on health and performance occur. This is why in this paper a two-way standardized, systematic and controlled protocol for inducing low energy availability in free-living athletes is proposed. Ways of inducing low energy availability in athletes are described with a systematic approach to ensure accurate results. We suggest this is how new tools for assessing low energy availability can be developed with less burden on the athlete and the scientist. Analysis of each proposed protocol provides a rationale for their use. Future research directions are suggested for determining the threshold for low energy availability and determining the critical duration for its negative effects. Finally, we suggest a practical outcome of using the proposed research approach for health practitioners and coaches in order to protect athlete’s well-being.

During intraoperative monitoring of motor evoked potentials (MEP), heterogeneity across studies in terms of study populations, intraoperative settings, applied warning criteria, and outcome reporting exists. A scoping review of MEP warning criteria in supratentorial surgery was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Sixty-eight studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria. The most commonly used alarm criteria were MEP signal loss, which was always a major warning sign, followed by amplitude reduction and threshold elevation. Irreversible MEP alterations were associated with a higher number of transient and persisting motor deficits compared with the reversible changes. In almost all studies, specificity and Negative Predictive Value (NPV) were high, while in most of them, sensitivity and Positive Predictive Value (PPV) were rather low or modest. Thus, the absence of an irreversible alteration may reassure the neurosurgeon that the patient will not suffer a motor deficit in the short-term and long-term follow-up. Further, MEPs perform well as surrogate markers, and reversible MEP deteriorations after successful intervention indicate motor function preservation postoperatively. However, in future studies, a consensus regarding the definitions of MEP alteration, critical duration of alterations, and outcome reporting should be determined.

The Earth has been beset by many crises during its history, and yet comparing the ecological impacts of these mass extinctions has been difficult. Key questions concern the kinds of species that go extinct and survive, how communities rebuild in the post-extinction recovery phase, and especially how the scaling of events affects these processes. Here, we explore ecological impacts of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems in three mass extinctions through the mid-Phanerozoic, a span of 121 million years (295–174 Ma). This critical duration encompasses the largest mass extinction of all time, the Permian–Triassic (P–Tr) and is flanked by two smaller crises, the Guadalupian–Lopingian (G–L) and Triassic–Jurassic (T–J) mass extinctions. Palaeocommunity dynamics modelling of 14 terrestrial and freshwater communities through a long sedimentary succession from the lower Permian to the lower Jurassic in northern Xinjiang, northwest China, shows that the P–Tr mass extinction differed from the other two in two ways: (i) ecological recovery from this extinction was prolonged and the three post-extinction communities in the Early Triassic showed low stability and highly variable and unpredictable responses to perturbation primarily following the huge losses of species, guilds and trophic space; and (ii) the G–L and T–J extinctions were each preceded by low-stability communities, but post-extinction recovery was rapid. Our results confirm the uniqueness of the P–Tr mass extinction and shed light on the trophic structure and ecological dynamics of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems across the three mid-Phanerozoic extinctions, and how complex communities respond to environmental stress and how communities recovered after the crisis. Comparisons with the coeval communities from the Karoo Basin, South Africa show that geographically and compositionally different communities of terrestrial ecosystems were affected in much the same way by the P–Tr extinction.

Abstract BackgroundSilver-spoon hypothesis suggests that fitness of individuals is high under good adult conditions provided their development itself has been in good conditions and those who have grown in resource-poor conditions are at a permanent disadvantage. Using two types of Drosophila melanogaster populations grown under two conditions we tested the validity of silver-spoon hypothesis. Three populations were selected for faster pre-adult development as a result of which they had access to food for a shorter duration while the three control populations had access to food for longer duration as growing larvae. In the second set-up the access to food was curtailed immediately on attainment of critical size. We assessed biomolecule levels, copulation latency, copulation duration, life-time realized oviposition and longevity to validate the silver-spoon hypothesis. ResultsRestricted feeding duration as a consequence of selection for faster per-adult development had no fitness consequences in selected populations. However, starvation during post-critical duration resulted in reduced fitness. ConclusionOur results show that the silver-spoon model is applicable only under extreme nutrition curtailment and not applicable to biological systems that have genetically evolved to limit food intake.

The article is devoted to evaluating the experience of distance learning in the discipline General surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizational issues and some results of 6-month distance learning in General surgery have been considered. The most significant changes occurred in the methodology of the main part of classes in terms of teaching practical skills of medical and diagnostic orientation. Demonstration of appropriate actions in graphic and video materials did not ensure the development of practical skills, and it turned out that distance learning does not have all the properties of clinical training. It takes much more time a teacher on preparing for classes and test activities for students, including taking the exam remotely. Further study of distance learning opportunities is required (determining the critical duration of distance learning, the need to change the list of practical skills to be mastered, etc.) in cooperation with clinical departments of surgical and related profiles (bibliography: 8 refs).

In the context of rainfall-induced landslides involving pyroclastic soils, the present work analyzes the influence of cover thickness on slope stability conditions. To this aim, the slope failure that occurred in Nocera Inferiore (4th March 2005) is selected as a reference test case, providing the actual weather forcing history that preceded the event, the hydraulic characterization of the soil involved, and the lowermost boundary condition (variously fractured calcareous bedrock underlying the cover). By maintaining unchanged soil hydraulic properties, the relationship between domain thickness, initial soil suction distribution, and slope instability induced by critical rainfall is investigated by numerical analyses. These refer to a rigid unsaturated domain subject to one dimensional flow conditions under the effects of incoming (precipitation) and outcoming (evaporation) fluxes applied at the uppermost boundary. The main outcomes indicate that critical event duration increases significantly with increasing the domain thickness. This relationship is strongly influenced by initial suction distribution. A linear relationship results for soil suction that is assumed to be constant at the beginning of the critical event. However, this relationship is quadratic if, by simulating the actual antecedent meteorological conditions, suction at the beginning of the critical event is the main function of the domain thickness. Additional numerical analyses were carried out to characterize the influence of a different lowermost boundary condition. Outcomes indicate that, for the same thickness, critical duration is substantially longer if the cover contact is with the same material as that of the cover.

Adult body size in holometabolus insects is directly proportional to the time spent during the larval period. The larval duration can be divided into two parts: (i) pre-critical duration—time required to attain a critical size/critical weight that would result in successful completion of development and metamorphosis even under non-availability of nutrition beyond the time of attainment of critical size, and (ii) post-critical duration—the time duration from the attainment of critical size till pupation. It is of interest to decipher the relative contribution of the two larval growth phases (from the hatching of the egg to the attainment of critical size, and from the attainment of critical size to pupation) to the final adult size. Many studies using Drosophila melanogaster have shown that selecting populations for faster development results in the emergence of small adults. Some of these studies have indirectly reported the evolution of smaller critical size. Using two kinds of D. melanogaster populations, one of which is selected for faster/accelerated pre-adult development and the other their ancestral control, we demonstrate that the final adult size is determined by the time spent as larvae post the attainment of critical size despite having increased growth rate during the second larval instar. Our populations under selection for faster pre-adult development are exhibiting adaptive bailout due to intrinsic food limitation as against extrinsic food limitation in the yellow dung fly.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate local and systemic pathology in a murine model of ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injury induced by long-term application of a tourniquet on the hind limbs and to assess the protective effects of edaravone, a potent systemic scavenger of free radicals, using this model. Methods: Sixty C57BL6 mice were divided in two groups, with one group receiving a 3 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection of edaravone and the other group receiving an identical amount of saline 30 min before ischemia under deep anesthesia. The left thigh of each animal was constricted for 4 h with a 4.5-oz. orthodontic rubber band to induce ischemia; 4 h was the critical duration for skeletal muscles. After ischemia, specimens of skeletal muscles, both kidneys, and plasma were collected at 0, 2, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h. Injury to the skeletal muscles and vacuolar degeneration of the kidneys were histologically assessed. Additionally, apoptosis of skeletal muscle cells was assessed by analysis of caspase 3/7 activity and TUNEL staining. Plasma tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Results: Skeletal muscles exhibited prominent injury of myofibers at 12 h after I/R injury, with clear upregulation of plasma TNF-α expression and histologic evidence of tubular dysfunction of the kidneys. Plasma TNF-α levels declined and histologic renal damage was ameliorated in edaravone-treated mice, but treatment did not protect skeletal muscle following ischemia for 4 h. Nonetheless, compared with group S, expression of the apoptosis marker caspase 3/7 was significantly inhibited in the skeletal hind limb muscles of Ed-group mice affected by reperfusion injury following ischemia for 4 h. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that edaravone is a potentially useful drug for systemic or local treatment of reperfusion injury resulting from long-term ischemia.
