In this study, the predation behaviour of male and female predatory nematode, Fictor composticola, was studied on five prey nematode species, Aphelenchus avenae, Aphelenchoides swarupi, Ditylenchus myceliophagus, Bursilla sp. and Panagrolaimus sp., found in the white button mushroom compost. The period of the study is of six months. The data recorded on number of encounters, part of the body of prey attacked, stage of the prey attacked, duration of feeding etc. The strike rate and prey susceptibility were calculated. The average number of encounters on all the five preys done by female F. composticola was 3.0 and that of the male was 6.0. Male F. composticola had more number of encounters on the prey nematode species than the females. Both the sexes preferred juvenile stages over adults as prey. The most attacked part by both females and males predator, was the posterior part of the prey body. In 80% of cases, female predators fed on the first encountered prey while males attacked the first encountered prey in 30% of cases only. The strike rate of female F. composticola was more (78.6%) than the male (48.2%). Mycophagous nematodes were more susceptible to predator’s attack than the microbivorous nematodes. The strike rate of the predator on different prey nematode species was found more on mycophagous nematodes than on microbivorous nematodes and minimum on Panagrolaimus sp. The average feeding duration of female F. composticola was 8 min and 31 sec and in the case of males it was 4 min and 11 sec.

Abstract Background Long term feeding tubes, managed independently at home have been shown to improve quality of life scores and in general are considered to be well tolerated. Beaumont Hospital has seen an increase in the number of patients referred for home enteral feeding (HEN) prior to neoadjuvant treatment for oesophagogastric (OG) cancer.   We aimed to gain an insight into the supports, experiences and challenges encountered by these patients in an emerging service. Methods A retrospective qualitative study using data from 2019-2020. A questionnaire was adapted from a multicentre Irish study in 2017. Patients with OG cancer for treatment with curative intent, that underwent an elective feeding tube insertion for preoperative supplementary feeding were included. Patients were provided with a questionnaire via post. Data was analysed using Microsoft Excel.  Results Response rate was 82% (14 of 17questionnaires).   Mean age 60.4yrs (SD 11.7).  93% male (N = 13).  In 36% (N = 5) tube feeding duration was < 3months and 3-6months duration in 43% (N = 6).  Conclusions Overall positive feedback was received from patients regarding living with a feeding tube, confirming the important and impactful role of HEN. Priorities for service improvements: improved discharge information and resources may help  reduce use of unreliable resources e.g. develop HEN discharge booklet to keep all relevant information in one accessible location, development of video education resources for consolidation of knowledge.  Aim to provide more structured follow up with clear plans and channels of communication outlined for the patient. Quality improvement work with surgical team to reduce complication rate with feeding tubes.

The dorsal raphe (DR) nucleus is involved in a myriad of physiological functions, such as the control of sleep-wake cycle, motivation, pain, energy balance, and food intake. We have previously demonstrated that in ad libitum fed rats the intra-DR administration of phenylephrine, an α-1 receptor agonist, does not affect food intake, whereas clonidine, an α-2 receptor agonist, potently stimulates food intake. These results indicated that in fed rats an increased adrenergic tonus blocked food intake, since the activation of α-2 auto-receptors, which decreases pre-synaptic release of adrenaline/noradrenaline, affected food intake. Thus, in this study we assessed whether the response to adrenergic stimuli would differ after overnight fasting, a situation of low adrenergic activity in the DR. Intra-DR administration of adrenaline and noradrenaline blocked food intake evoked by overnight fasting. Similarly, phenylephrine administration decreased hunger-induced food intake. These changes in food intake were accompanied by changes in other behaviors, such as increased immobility time and feeding duration. On the other hand, intra-DR administration of clonidine did not affect food-intake or associated behaviors. These results further support the hypothesis that in fed animals, increased adrenergic tonus in DR neurons inhibiting feeding, while in fasted rats the adrenergic tonus decreases and favors food intake. These data indicate a possible mechanism through which adrenergic input to the DRN contributes to neurobiology of feeding.

Sap-feeding insects cause significant yield losses to the worlds crops, these insects feed using syringe-like mouthparts and electrophysiology can be used to compare feeding behaviour on susceptible and resistant plants to identify the mechanistic processes behind resistant phenotypes. Data extracted from 129 studies, comprising 41 insect species across eight insect taxa and 12 host-plant families representing over 30 species, demonstrates that mechanisms deployed by resistant plants have common consequences on the feeding behaviour of diverse insect groups. We show that insects feeding on resistant plants take longer to establish a feeding site and have their feeding duration suppressed two-fold compared with insects feeding on susceptible plants. Our results reveal that the underlying traits contributing towards resistant phenotypes are conserved across plant families, deployed against taxonomically diverse insect groups, and that the underlying resistance mechanisms are conserved. These findings provide new insight that will be beneficial when developing future crop varieties.

Begomoviruses are transmitted by whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in a persistent-circulative way. Once B. tabaci becomes viruliferous, it remains so throughout its life span. Not much is known about the copies of begomoviruses ingested and/or released by B. tabaci during the process of feeding. The present study reports the absolute quantification of two different begomoviruses viz. tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV, bipartite) and chilli leaf curl virus (ChiLCV, monopartite) at different exposure of active acquisition and inoculation feeding using a detached leaf assay. A million copies of both the begomoviruses were acquired by a single B. tabaci with only 5 min of active feeding and virus copy number increased in a logarithmic model with feeding exposure. Whereas, a single B. tabaci could inoculate 8.21E+09 and 4.19E+11 copies of ToLCNDV and ChiLCV, respectively in detached leaves by 5 min of active feeding. Virus copies in inoculated leaves increased with an increase in feeding duration. Comparative dynamics of these two begomoviruses indicated that B. tabaci adult acquired around 14-fold higher copies of ChiLCV than ToLCNDV 24 hrs post feeding. Whereas, the rate of inoculation of ToLCNDV by individual B. tabaci was significantly higher than ChiLCV. The study provides a better understanding of begomovirus acquisition and inoculation dynamics by individual B. tabaci and would facilitate research on virus-vector epidemiology and screening host resistance.

Huanglongbing, commonly known as citrus greening, is a devastating disease of citrus worldwide. Candidatus liberibacter asiaticus is the putative cause of citrus greening disease in China and is spread through the process of plant grafting and feeding by insect vectors. Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) is a destructive pest due to insecticide resistance development and the main cause of dissemination of Huanglongbing. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of Huanglongbing present in Guangdong province and the acquisition of the pathogen by D. citri through feeding. Six different city areas of Guangdong province were sampled. The results demonstrated that Yunfu currently has the highest infestation rate of CLas in Guangdong province, followed by Chaozhou, Jiangmen, and Foshan. In comparison, Zhongshan and Maoming have the lowest infestation rates. Results also showed that CLas acquisition was directly proportional to the insect feeding duration. The longer an insect fed on an infested plant, the more CLas it acquired. The acquisition efficiency of the pathogen was higher at night compared to during the daytime. During the time period of 15:00–07:00 D. citri acquires more pathogens than during the period of 07:00–15:00. This study provides a basic understanding of the feeding pattern of D. citri, which aids in devising a management program for effective control of direct and indirect losses caused by D. citri.

Acute non-typhoidal salmonellosis (NTS) caused by Salmonella enterica Typhimurium (STM) is among the most prevalent of foodborne diseases. A global rising of antibiotic resistance strains of STM raises an urgent need for alternative methods to control this important pathogen. Major human food animals which harbor STM in their gut are cattle, swine, and poultry. Previous studies showed that the probiotic Limosilactobacillus (Lactobacillus) reuteri KUB-AC5 (AC5) exhibited anti-Salmonella activities in chicken by modulating gut microbiota and the immune response. However, the immunobiotic effect of AC5 in a mammalian host is still not known. Here, we investigated the anti-Salmonella and anti-inflammatory effects of AC5 on STM infection using a mouse colitis model. Three groups of C57BL/6 mice (prophylactic, therapeutic, and combined) were fed with 109 colony-forming units (cfu) AC5 daily for 7, 4, and 11 days, respectively. Then, the mice were challenged with STM compared to the untreated group. By using a specific primer pair, we found that AC5 can transiently colonize mouse gut (colon, cecum, and ileum). Interestingly, AC5 reduced STM gut proliferation and invasion together with attenuated gut inflammation and systemic dissemination in mice. The decreased STM numbers in mouse gut lumen, gut tissues, and spleen possibly came from longer AC5 feeding duration and/or the combinatorial (direct and indirect inhibitory) effect of AC5 on STM. However, AC5 attenuated inflammation (both in the gut and in the spleen) with no difference between these three approaches. This study demonstrated that AC5 confers both direct and indirect inhibitory effects on STM in the inflamed gut.

This study was designed to investigate the influence of dietary chitosan feeding-duration on glucose and lipid metabolism in diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin and nicotinamide [a non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) model]. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used as experimental animals and divided into short-term (6 weeks) and long-term (11 weeks) feeding durations, and each duration contained five groups: (1) control, (2) control + 5% chitosan, (3) diabetes, (4) diabetes + 0.8 mg/kg rosiglitazone (a positive control), and (5) diabetes + 5% chitosan. Whether the chitosan feeding was for 6 or 11 weeks, the chitosan supplementation decreased blood glucose and lipids levels and liver lipid accumulation. However, chitosan supplementation decreased plasma tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, insulin levels, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase activity. Meanwhile, it increased plasma high-density lipoproteins (HDL)-cholesterol level, plasma angiopoietin-like-4 protein expression, and plasma triglyceride levels (at 11-week feeding duration only). Taken together, 11-week (long-term) chitosan feeding may help to ameliorate the glucose and lipid metabolism in a NIDDM diabetic rat model.

Starfruit contains active ingredients such as flavonoids, phenols, antioxidants and vitamin C so that it can be used as an immunostimulant in catfish farming activities. Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS) is one of the obstacles that can cause catfish farming losses. This study aims to determine the effect of differences in timing of feeding containing starfruit juice to protect catfish from MAS disease. The study was designed using a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 6 treatments (P) in the form of feeding duration containing starfruit for 7 days (P1), 14 days (P2), 21 days (P3), 28 days (P4). and 35 days (P5) and control of feeding without star fruit juice (P0). The research was carried out at the Aquaculture Laboratory, Sriwijya University. The dose of star fruit juice mixed in the feed is 300 mL.Kg-1 while the catfish used is 8-12 cm in size. The challenge test used Aeromonas hydrophilla bacteria with a density of 108 CFU.mL-1 which was injected as much as 0.5 mL.tail-1 intramuscularly. The results showed that administration containing starfruit juice for 28 days provided the best protection. Based on the hematological test the day before and before infection, the delta decreased the hematocrit by 3% and the delta decreased the erythrocyte count by 3,103 cells.mL-1. In addition, live feed after infection was 100%, prevalence was 17.78% and there was no effect of giving starfruit juice on growth and feed efficiency.

Abstract Background Several modifications of the Kimura procedure for congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) have been reported, however, their effects on the outcomes show conflicting results. Methods We compared the CDO outcomes following the Kimura procedure with and without post-anastomosis jejunostomy feeding tube (JFT). Results A total of 52 CDO neonates were involved (JFT: 13 males and 2 females vs. non-JFT: 14 males and 23 females, p = 0.0019). Time to full oral feeding was significantly earlier in the JFT than non-JFT group (14 [interquartile range (IQR), 12–15] vs. 17 [IQR, 14–22.5] days; p = 0.04). Duration of parenteral nutrition given to infants with CDO after surgery was significantly shorter in the JFT than non-JFT group (12 [IQR, 10–15] vs. 17 [IQR, 13–23] days; p = 0.031). Moreover, enteral feeding was significantly earlier in the JFT than non-JFT group (2 [IQR, 1–3.5] vs. 5 [IQR, 4–6] days; p = < 0.0001). However, the length of stay following surgery was not significantly different between groups (16 [IQR, 14–22] vs. 20 [IQR, 17–28] days; p = 0.22). Also, overall patient survival did not significantly differ between JFT (66.7%) and non-JFT patients (59.5%) (p = 0.61). Conclusion Jejunostomy feeding tube shows a beneficial effect on the time to full oral feeding, duration of parenteral nutrition and early enteral feeding in neonates with congenital duodenal obstruction after Kimura procedure.
