As the world struggled to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers worked around the clock to understand what was going on, medically, socially, and economically. At the same time, usual research processes were disrupted: campuses were closed and normal government data collection and dissemination went haywire. Data professionals in academic libraries sprang into action to help. They shared resources, developed workshops, helped find alternative methods of carrying out research, and found ways of coping with the influx of COVID-related data. Social crises are fought on the front lines by medical professionals and service providers, but they are also fought with research, with information, with data. Libraries are at the nexus of information and communication and library professionals were able to play an important supporting role in helping researchers combat the effects of the pandemic.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the authors, who have expertise in acoustics, optics, and astrophysics, decided to pivot from the experimental components of their research and focus instead on computational studies. Many of their usual research practices were adapted, creating new techniques to optimize the remote research experience for their undergraduate students.

Abstract The helium circulator is used in the 10MW High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTR-10). The circulator operates at helium condition in order to transport the core heat to the steam generator. Rotor is a key component of the helium circulator. The rotor vibrates during the operation of the helium circulator. The study of the vibration characteristics of the rotor can provide important design parameters for the helium circulator. The effect of the shell on the rotor in the helium circulator is ignored in the usual research and analysis. In this paper, the working process of the rotor considering the shell effect was studied by theoretical analysis, and the vibration characteristics of the rotor considering the shell effect with various types and parameters was studied by finite element method (FEM). More accurate ranges of the rotor parameters which ensure the helium circulator to operate normally were determined. The shell increases the degree of freedom (DOF) of the rotor, which makes the analysis of the motion process of the rotor more complicated. The results show that the different parameters of the shell on the rotor play an important role in the analysis results of the vibration characteristics. The analysis results considering the shell effect of the rotor are more accurate than the usual analysis results.

In this article, I present three I-poems from a larger research project in which I explore the health, identity and social impacts of cycling for people with physical disabilities. I used I-poems as a means of kick-starting an in-depth, multi-perspective engagement with my interview transcripts after struggling to formulate insightful and productive thematic analysis. For me, this research project is something of a departure from my normal research processes and practices as it is taking place in partnership with a voluntary organisation. This organisation facilitated the recruitment of the research participants and had specific inputs into the research questions as well as maintaining ongoing interests in the research findings. My usual research tends to be much less structured and much more exploratory and messy than this. And yet, for me, this messiness facilitates insight and creative engagement which is intensely productive in terms of both findings and outputs – often via the use of creative methods. Therefore, as much as I have enjoyed conducting the research for this project and liaising with the organisation and meeting the participants, I struggled to find my ‘researcher mojo’ when working with the transcripts. In this context, I-poems became a creative stimulant for productive engagement with the transcripts and deepening my critical and reflective insights into the data.

Interviewing is a usual research method in qualitative research which is widely used in pedagogy as well. Yet, interviewing very young children is rather rare as it carries special difficulties and researchers find it better not to overcomplicate the research process for the sake of potentially not useful material. While this might be true, it is worth focussing on the hardships and special features of this research technique, too. Therefore, the study shows the difference between interviewing children and adults, and at the same time, it also deals with a timely topic, multilingualism, which the present study will examine from the point of view of the kindergarteners. The originality of the study lies not in conducting interviews as a part of qualitative research but in the intention according to which the author wants to concentrate on this method, i.e. interviewing very young children (between 3 and 6) showing that it is a special job which demands more attention in educational linguistics.

Banyuwangi Jaranan Dance is a traditional art that is rich in artistic and cultural values, this dance is also very thick to the impression of magical and spiritual value. Jaranan dance is a very famous art in banyuwangi spread in several districts, such as District Banyuwangi, Kabat, Rogojampi, Kalipuro, Licin, Singonjuruh, Rogojampi, Giri and Glagah district. The usual research on Jaranan has been done a lot. From several studies on jaranan, this study is very different from the initial research that focuses on the initial research of jaranan art, the values / meaning of jaranan art, the art of jaranan performance, and the art of jaranan performance. This research is more focused on the culture of "Kesurupan" which includes the process of ritual possession, the meaning of possession and culture in ritual jaranan Banyuwangi. Researchers took data in three sub-districts of Banyuwangi, namely Jaranan Baluk Group, Glagah sub-district, Jaranan Karang Asem Group and Giri Sub-District, Tresno Budoyo Jaranan Group. Researchers use qualitative descriptive method with data recognition techniques, interviews and documentation.

This paper tries to demonstrate that virtual communities or social media influence the decision to buy tourism products. Specifically, we show that smartphone bookings made by business tourists coming to Barcelona are increasingly popular. The methodology used is first a comprehensive literature review on the topic, media and social networks as a means of tourism promotion and product recommendation. Then, the article goes on with quantitative method that converts the object of study into numerical data, with emphasis on the measurable objective and, therefore, requiring the use of statistics For this study we decided to devise a quantitative questionnaire which is usually the method of data collection by most usual research using this type of method. The multiple choice is an instrument for obtaining data and it is used to gather the information needed: facts, opinions, trends. Data collection was carried out for 4 months (May, June, July and August 2015) with n=1512. We conducted a sieve with inclusion and exclusion criteria and which discarded all participants who did not travel for business. The final sample was 494 participants. We conclude that Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare social media are the media used by young people and where gender does not influence their use. However, the degree of use of Google+, Linkedin, TripAdvisor and Booking have no significant relationship, taking into account such variables as age and gender.

Keywords: smartphones, emprical, business

In science the usual research and thinking are based on the cause-effect relations while in the law this approach is mainly used in adjudication and not in rule making. Within the latter causality cannot reach a scientific level, so there are substitutes of causation at work that are a base also for the canons of interpretation. Draft rules are in the majority of cases prepared by the public administration, but surprisingly there is a little emphasis of the public administration’s role at interpretation of the (draft and enacted) rules. The paper deals with reasons for the absence of causation in rule making, states the non-scientific substitutes of causation in rule making and points at the modus operandi of rule making in the absence of causality for which administrative deference is of crucial importance. The paper gives reasons for the absence of canons of interpretation in Europe and gives the most important canons of interpretation for the rulemaking in the public administration. This work can be more complex than judicial, because the element of institution’s impact is more present in the first.

This paper, the first in a pair, describes the development and use of a research tool designed to not only derive the “usual” research patterns from analysis and synthesis of data, but also to extend that research outcome into useful lessons and instructions for others to act on in the non-research world. Research is essentially about finding and explaining patterns to help us understand phenomena and to measure similarities and differences. Pattern also has other useful attributes – as tools, templates, and instructive advices – that tend not to be given as much attention in research. The tool discussed in this paper seeks an easy-to-use “close fit” between these two uses of pattern. It enabled maximum engagement by the research participants, in-depth exploration of the area between the abstract (theory) and the concrete (practice) of the issue at hand, and development of useful instructive advices for others to use. It comprises an original design that can be adapted for use in other research with similar aims. A second paper, in a subsequent edition of The Qualitative Report, describes the development of the subsequent “pattern language” of instructive advices.
