Downslope windstorms and associated extreme wind speed statistics evaluation according to the COSMO-CLM Russian Arctic hindcast, ASR reanalysis and observations

<p>The number of severe weather events at the Arctic region increased significantly. Its formation related generally to the mesoscale processes including downslope windstorms over Novaya Zemlya, Svalbard, Tiksi bay accompanied by strong winds. Therefore, its investigation required detailed hydrometeorological and climatic information with a horizontal resolution of at least several kilometers. This work aims to investigate extreme wind speeds statistics associated with downslope windstorms and evaluate it according to the COSMO-CLM Russian Arctic hindcast, ASR reanalysis, stations and satellite data.</p><p>COSMO-CLM Russian Arctic hindcast created in 2020 covers the 1980–2016 period with grid size ~12 km and 1-hour output step, containing approximately a hundred hydrometeorological characteristics, as well at surface, as on the 50 model levels. The primary assessments of the surface wind speed and temperature fields showed good agreement with ERA-Interim reanalysis in large-scale patterns and many added values in the regional mesoscale features reproduction according to the coastlines, mountains, large lakes, and other surface properties.</p><p>Mean values, absolute and daily maxima of wind speed, high wind speed frequencies were estimated for the COSMO-CLM Russian Arctic hindcast and the well-known Arctic System Reanalysis (ASRv2) for a 2000-2016 period. COSMO-CLM showed higher mean and daily maximal wind speed areas concerned to coastal regions of Svalbard and Scandinavia, over the northern areas of Taymyr peninsula. At the same time, the absolute wind speed maxima are significantly higher according to ASRv2, specially over the Barents Sea, near the Novaya Zemlya coast (differences are up to 15-20 m/s). The same pattern observed by a number of days with wind speed above the 30 m/s threshold. Compared with station data, the ASRv2 reproduced mean wind speeds better at most coastal and inland station, MAE are within 3 m/s. For absolute wind speed maxima differences between two datasets get lower, the COSMO-CLM hindcast is quite better for inland stations.</p><p>Model capability to reproduce strong downslope windstorms evaluated according to the observations timeseries over Novaya Zemlya, Svalbard and Tiksi stations during bora conditions. Generally, the ASRv2 reproduced the wind direction closer to observations and the wind speed worser than COSMO-CLM. The extreme wind speed frequencies during bora cases have less errors according to COSMO-CLM hindcast (up to ~5%) compared to the ASRv2 data (up to 10%). At the same time, moderate wind speed frequencies are reproduced by ASRv2 better.</p><p>Five specific Novaya Zemlya bora cases were evaluated according to SAR satellite wind speed data. Both ASRv2 and COSMO-CLM overestimated mean wind speed (MAE 0.5-6 m/s), maximal wind speed bias has different signs, however, the COSMO-CLM is better in most cases. Extreme percentiles biases (99 and 99.9%), correlation, structure and amplitude (according to the SAL method) are closer to observations by the COSMO-CLM hindcast.</p>

Assessing the Risks of Vessel Icing and Aviation Hazards during Downslope Windstorms in the Russian Arctic

Downslope windstorms are known sources of hazardous weather, such as severe gusty winds, rapid temperature changes, ship icing, strong turbulence and others, posing a great danger to people and infrastructure. This paper investigates the risks of ship icing and aviation hazards (rapid changes in the angle of attack and gust load factor) during downslope windstorms in five regions in the Russian Arctic based on observational data, reanalysis, and mesoscale numerical modeling. The highest frequency of ship icing was found during downslope windstorms downstream from Svalbard and Novaya Zemlya. Icing is rare during Tiksi and Wrangel Island downslope windstorms due to almost permanent sea ice cover during the cold season, while icing is absent during very warm Pevek downslope windstorm even in the ice-free conditions. Conditions for heavy icing are rather frequent (up to 5% of cases in winter) during Novaya Zemlya downslope windstorms and less frequent (up to 0.5% in spring) during Svalbard windstorm. The presence of downslope windstorms in those regions causes an increase in the maximum icing rate by about 2 times. Strong aviation turbulence hazardous for light aircraft is typical for all considered regions with downslope windstorms; it is observed mainly at an altitude of 1 to 4 km above the surface. Hazardous turbulence for jet aircraft like Boeing 737 on its cruising flight levels was found on Svalbard and in Tiksi region in 10–15% of cases during strong downslope windstorms.

Uncertainties in forecasting orographic flows

<p>The accuracy of a large set of high-resolution wind speed forecasts with different lead times is assessed for different parts of orographic flows, including upstream blockings, gap winds, corner winds, wakes and downslope winds.  The by far largest errors are in areas of downslope windstorms, but there are also considerable errors in the other parts of orographic disturbances to the flow and they are greater than in non-orographic flows in the same region.  The errors are discussed in view of the different dynamics and kinematics of the flows.  They are partly related to intermittency of i.e. gravity waves as well as strong spatial gradients in the wind field.</p>

The Sundowner Winds Experiment (SWEX) Pilot Study: Understanding Downslope Windstorms in the Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara, California

Sundowner winds are downslope gusty winds often observed on the southern slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains (SYM) in coastal Santa Barbara (SB), California. They typically peak near sunset and exhibit characteristics of downslope windstorms through the evening. They are SB’s most critical fire weather in all seasons and represent a major hazard for aviation. The Sundowner Winds Experiment Pilot Study was designed to evaluate vertical profiles of winds, temperature, humidity, and stability leeward of the SYM during a Sundowner event. This was accomplished by launching 3-hourly radiosondes during a significant Sundowner event on 28–29 April 2018. This study showed that winds in the lee of the SYM exhibit complex spatial and temporal patterns. Vertical profiles showed a transition from humid onshore winds from morning to midafternoon to very pronounced offshore winds during the evening after sunset. These winds accompanied mountain waves and a northerly nocturnal lee jet with variable temporal behavior. Around sunset, the jet was characterized by strong wind speeds enhanced by mountain-wave breaking. Winds weakened considerably at 2300 PDT 29 April but enhanced dramatically at 0200 PDT 29 April at much lower elevations. These transitions were accompanied by changes in stability profiles and in the Richardson number. A simulation with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model at 1-km grid spacing was examined to evaluate the skill of the model in capturing the observed winds and stability profiles and to assess mesoscale processes associated with this event. These results advanced understanding on Sundowner’s spatiotemporal characteristics and driving mechanisms.

The 2018 Camp Fire: Meteorological Analysis Using In Situ Observations and Numerical Simulations

The November 2018 Camp Fire quickly became the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. In this case study, we investigate the contribution of meteorological conditions and, in particular, a downslope windstorm that occurred during the 2018 Camp Fire. Dry seasonal conditions prior to ignition led to 100-h fuel moisture contents in the region to reach record low levels. Meteorological observations were primarily made from a number of remote automatic weather stations and a mobile scanning Doppler lidar deployed to the fire on 8 November 2018. Additionally, gridded operational forecast models and high-resolution meteorological simulations were synthesized in the analysis to provide context for the meteorological observations and structure of the downslope windstorm. Results show that this event was associated with mid-level anti-cyclonic Rossby wave breaking likely caused by cold air advection aloft. An inverted surface trough over central California created a pressure gradient which likely enhanced the downslope winds. Sustained surface winds between 3–6 m s−1 were observed with gusts of over 25 m s−1 while winds above the surface were associated with an intermittent low-level jet. The meteorological conditions of the event were well forecasted, and the severity of the fire was not surprising given the fire danger potential for that day. However, use of surface networks alone do not provide adequate observations for understanding downslope windstorm events and their impact on fire spread. Fire management operations may benefit from the use of operational wind profilers to better understand the evolution of downslope windstorms and other fire weather phenomena that are poorly understood and observed.

Downslope windstorms in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec during Tehuantepecer events: a numerical study with WRF high-resolution simulations

Tehuantepecers or Tehuanos are extreme winds produced in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, blowing south through Chivela Pass, the mountain gap across the isthmus, from the Gulf of Mexico into the Pacific Ocean. They are the result of the complex interaction between large-scale meteorological conditions and local orographic forcings around Chivela Pass, and occur mainly in winter months due to cold air damming in the wake of cold fronts that reach as far south as the Bay of Campeche. Even though the name refers mostly to the intense mountain gap outflow, Tehuantepecer episodes can also generate other localized extreme wind conditions across the region, such as downslope windstorms and hydraulic jumps, which are strong turbulent flows that have a direct effect on the Pacific side of the isthmus and the Gulf of Tehuantepec. This study focuses on investigating these phenomena using high horizontal and vertical resolution WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model simulations. In particular, we employ a 4-nested grid configuration with up to 444 m horizontal spacing in the innermost domain and 70 hybrid-sigma vertical levels, 8 of which lie within the first 200 m above ground. We select one 36 h period in December 2013, when favorable conditions for a strong gap wind situation were observed. The high-resolution WRF experiment reveals a significant fine-scale structure in the strong Tehuano wind flow, beyond the well known gap jet. Depending on the Froude number upstream of the topographic barrier, different downslope windstorm conditions and hydraulic jumps with rotor circulations develop simultaneously at different locations east of Chivela Pass with varied crest height. A comparison with observations suggests that the model accurately represents the spatially heterogeneous intense downslope windstorm and the formation of mountain wave clouds for several hours, with low errors in wind speed, wind direction and temperature.

Simulating Sundowner Winds in Coastal Santa Barbara: Model Validation and Sensitivity

This study investigates the influence of planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes and land surface models (LSMs) on the performance of the Weather Research & Forecasting model in simulating the development of downslope windstorms in the lee of the Santa Ynez Mountains in Santa Barbara, California (known as Sundowner winds). Using surface stations, a vertical wind profiler, and a multi-physics ensemble approach, we found that most of the wind speed biases are controlled by the roughness length z 0 , and so by the choice of LSM. While timing characteristics of Sundowners are insensitive to both LSM and PBL schemes, a clear sensitivity in the horizontal extent of strong surface winds is found for both PBL parameterization and z 0 , which are related to patterns of self-induced wave-breaking near the mountaintop, and the erosion of the marine layer. These results suggest that LSMs with relatively high values of z 0 , and TKE-based or hybrid PBL schemes adequately simulate downslope windstorms in the lee of mountain ranges, specifically in areas where downslope windstorms interact with the marine boundary layer with stably stratified characteristics.
