Although both beryllium and its compounds display high toxicity, little attention has been focused on the removal of beryllium from wastewaters. In this research, magnetically modified biochar obtained from poor-quality wheat with two distinct FexOy contents was studied as a sorbent for the elimination of beryllium from an aqueous solution. The determined elimination efficiency was higher than 80% in both prepared composites, and the presence of FexOy did not affect the sorption properties. The experimental qmax values were determined to be 1.44 mg/g for original biochar and biochar with lower content of iron and 1.45 mg/g for the biochar with higher iron content. The optimum pH values favorable for sorption were determined to be 6. After the sorption procedure, the sorbent was still magnetically active enough to be removed from the solution by a magnet. Using magnetically modified sorbents proved to be an easy to apply, low-cost, and effective technique.

The data on accumulated mining waste in the territory of Kazakhstan are presented. Their processing has become very important in our time. The structure of surface-modified carbon materials with a grafted layer is given. New modified carbon sorbents were obtained, oleum was used as a modifying agent. It was revealed that the capacitive characteristics of the modified sorbent are significantly higher than that of the original one, which will make it possible to more efficiently extract the metal ion from wastewater and technogenic formations. Sorption is an effective method of extracting valuable components from wastewater and man-made formations. This method allows you to recover valuable substances with a high degree of wastewater treatment, which can be purified to the maximum permissible concentration of pollutants and then used in technological processes or in recycling water supply systems. Processing involves ores characterized by a low content of valuable components, fine dissemination and similar technological properties of minerals. The existing technologies for the development of minerals make it possible to use only a small part of the valuable mineral mass extracted from the subsoil, and the rest forms waste, which, as it accumulates and is stored, becomes one of the most significant factors of anthropogenic changes in the environment.

The effective nanostructured sorbents based on natural bentonite modified with aluminum and iron (III) polyhydroxocations were obtained. The elemental composition of the obtained sorbents was studied. The specific surface area was determined for the studied samples. It was shown that modified sorbents based on natural bentonite were nanostructured objects. IR spectroscopy showed that modification of natural bentonite led to the changes in its structural properties. While studying the sorption process on modified sorbents, it was found that the modification of bentonite with aluminum and iron (III) compounds using the “codeposition” method led to the increase in the sorption capacity of the obtained sorbents. The sorption properties of the obtained sorbents were tested in relation to a number of organic dyes of the anionic and cationic types. It was established that the maximum sorption efficiency was achieved for extracting cationic substances from water, including organic dyes.

The paper studies various modifications of diatomite, aiming at creating sorbents for wastewater purification from heavy metal ions. Diatomite of the Akhmatovskoe deposit of the Penza region was considered as a raw material. The processes of physical and chemical modification of diatomite were investigated. Adsorption isotherms were constructed, quantitative characteristics of adsorption of copper ions on the surface of modified sorbents were obtained. A chemical modification (acidic and alkaline) is proposed, which results in an increased adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions. The applicability of diatomite for the purification of highly concentrated wastewater containing heavy metals is shown.

The paper presents the characteristics of waste generated in the Republic of Belarus. The results of the research on the use of sorbents based on wood waste in waste water treatment processes from copper, nickel and zinc ions are presented. It has been established that treatment of wood waste with carbamide increases its absorption capacity in respect of heavy metal ions.

Water pollution, especially by inorganic and organic substances, is considered as a critical problem worldwide. Several governmental agencies are listing an increasing number of compounds as serious problems in water because of their toxicity, bioaccumulation, and persistence. In recent decades, there has been considerable research on developing analytical methods of heavy metal ions and organic pollutants from water. Ionic liquids, as the environment-friendly solvents, have been applied in the analytical process owing to their unique physicochemical properties. This review summarizes the applications of ionic liquids in the determination of heavy metal ions and organic pollutants in water samples. In addition, some sorbents that were modified physically or chemically by ionic liquids were applied in the adsorption of pollutants. According to the results in all references, the application of new designed ionic liquids and related sorbents is expected to increase in the future
