Home-range size is a key aspect of space-use, and variation in home-range size and structure may have profound consequences for the potential impact of damage and control strategies for invasive species. However, knowledge on home-range structure of naturalized parrot species is very limited. The aim of this study was to quantify patterns of home-range variation according to sex and age of the monk parakeet Myiopsitta monachus, an invasive parakeet in Europe. Mean kernel home-range size was 12.4 ± 1.22 ha (range 1.7–74.1 ha; N = 73 birds). Juveniles had a larger home-range size than adults, but sexes did not differ in kernel home-range size. The mean maximum distance moved by monk parakeets was 727 ± 37.0 m (range: 150–1581 m), and it was not dependent on either the sex or age of the birds. Having a small home range is one of the conditions for the feasible eradication of an invasive species; hence, the small home range of urban monk parakeets that we report here is good news for pest managers. However, this small home-range size can limit the effectiveness of culling operations with traps or feeders with contraceptives or poison, and other alternatives, such as funnel nets or traps, should be used.

This article has arisen from a general investigation into the payload-range envelope of a multirole-tanker transport aircraft and how this envelope is modified as a result of the tanker’s refuelling activities. To this end, the Breguet range equation is used in conjunction with a simple fuel budget to model different scenarios in which the tanker aircraft can perform towline or trail missions. For the common radius of action case, a closed-form solution is obtained for the payload-range variation; for instances where the outbound journey and the return journey are of unequal lengths, the governing equation is found to require a numerical solution. The act of dispensing a significant quantity of fuel whilst some distance into a flight can have a dramatic impact on the tanker’s overall range and payload capability. An assessment of this payload-range modification needs to be made prior to commencing the flight to ensure the mission can safely be accomplished, which provides the motivation for the current work. Three case studies are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the method, and comparisons with published data show strong agreement. This model will be of use to planners wishing to investigate typical ‘ what if?’ scenarios on the overall mission.

Compared with the traditional plug-in charging system, wireless power transfer (WPT) system has the characteristics of electrical and mechanical isolation. A wireless system is proposed suitable for battery charging under misalignment or range variation, and the constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) charging are realized by the estimation of coupling coefficient. Firstly, two different operating frequencies based on SS basic compensation structure are designed to realize CC output and CV output respectively. After circuit analysis, CC and CV output cannot be achieved when the position of the secondary coil changes. To solve this issue, when the coil is under misalignment or range variations, the required system parameters are measured, and the coupling coefficient in the charging process is estimated by using the transconductance amplitude equation. Then the corresponding input voltage or working frequency is calculated and fine-tuned. Therefore, the CC and CV charge of the battery can be realized under misalignment or range variation. Finally, experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility and correctness of this method.

The wide-range variation of the strength of halogen bonds (XB) not only facilitates a variety of applications of this interaction, but it also allows examining the relation (and interconversion) between supramolecular and covalent bonding. Herein, the Br…Cl halogen bonding in a series of complexes of bromosubstituted electrophiles (R-Br) with chloride anions were examined via X-ray crystallographic and computational methods. Six co-crystals showing such bonding were prepared by evaporation of solutions of R-Br and tetra-n-propylammonium chloride or using Cl− anions released in the nucleophilic reaction of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane with dichloromethane in the presence of R-Br. The co-crystal comprised networks formed by 3:3 or 2:2 halogen bonding between R-Br and Cl−, with the XB lengths varying from 3.0 Å to 3.25 Å. Analysis of the crystallographic database revealed examples of associations with substantially longer and shorter Br…Cl separations. DFT computations of an extended series of R–Br…Cl− complexes confirmed that the judicious choice of brominated electrophile allows varying halogen Br…Cl bond strength and length gradually from the values common for the weak intermolecular complexes to that approaching a fully developed covalent bond. This continuity of halogen bond strength in the experimental (solid-state) and calculated associations indicates a fundamental link between the covalent and supramolecular bonding.

Abstract The processes underlying macroecological gradients in body size are widely debated, in part because their intraspecific variability remains poorly described even in well-studied taxa such as vertebrates. In this study, we investigated how climate, habitat, genetic lineage and sex explain body size variations in French populations of the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis). We measured 7016 adult individuals captured in 41 populations, covering most of the species’ distribution in metropolitan France, including Corsica. Body size variation in our sample was wide and comparable to that found across the species’ worldwide range. Variation was similar in magnitude at regional and local levels, suggesting that body size is influenced by local factors as much as by regional factors such as climate or genetic lineage. Smaller sizes were associated with Mediterranean or altered oceanic climates, and with two lineages (E. o. galloitalica and E. o. galloitalica/E. o. orbicularis), while larger sizes were associated with northern environments and the orbicularis lineage. Body size variations recorded at local level reflect an adaptive response to environmental constraints, suggesting that habitat is also an important factor in understanding size variation.
