To fulfill the demands of higher precision, better quality, and more flexibility, the usage of high-performance industrial robots is rapidly increased in aerospace industry. Considering the anisotropic and inhomogeneous characteristics of composite materials, this study focuses mainly on dynamic response investigation of a newly designed hybrid robot (named as TriMule) in CFRP trimming process and its influence on the machined quality. First, combined with the cutting force characteristic, the vibration responses of tool center point (TCP) under the dynamic excitation were obtained. The influences of robotic TCP vibration on machined surface quality with different fiber orientations, including surface waviness, cavity, 3D surface roughness, and depth of affected zone, are first studied by comparing hybrid robot and machine tool. From experiment results, it can be concluded the proposed TCP vibration response model has sufficient prediction accuracy. Meanwhile, it is found that larger robotic vibration response is accompanied by higher surface waviness, bigger surface cavity, and greater affected zone. Results also showed that the fiber orientation and milling style are two essential factors that affect robot vibration and machining quality during CFRP trimming.

Among advanced cutting methods, High Speed Milling (HSM) is often recommended to improve the productivity and to reduce the costs of machining parts. As every cutting process, HSM is characterized by some defects like surface roughness and delamination are the main defects generated in composite materials. The aim of this experimental work is the studying of the machining quality of woven Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) using the HSM technology. Experiments were done using different machining parameters combinations to make opened holes in CFRP laminates. This study investigated the effect of cutting speed, orbital feed speed, hole diameter on the delamination defect and surface roughness responses generated in the drilled holes. The design of experimental tests was generated using the approach of Central Composite Design (CCD). The characterization of these responses was treated with the Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Response surface methodology (RSM). Results showed that the surface roughness is highly affected by the orbital feed speed (F) with contribution of 22.45%. The delamination factor at entry and exit of holes is strongly influenced by the hole diameter D (25.97% and 57.43%) respectively. The developed model equations gave a good correlation between the empirical and predicted results. The optimization of the milling parameters was treated using desirability function to minimize the surface roughness (Ra) and the delamination factor simultaneously.

The improvement of machining quality is an actual focus of research in the area of machining with industrial robots. The machining quality that can be achieved is strongly dependant on the robot‘s pose. In the course of this paper the execution of experimental analysis for the determination of machining quality at different poses as well as first results are presented.

Abstract There are a lot of problems exist in the processing of long and thin deep hole gun drilling of high strength steel, such as insufficient of the machining mechanism and characteristics of gun drilling, difficulty in selecting machining parameters, unknown influence mechanism of machining parameters on drilling force, drilling temperature and machining quality. In this paper, 42CrMo high strength steel is selected as the workpiece material. A numerical model of cutting force is established based on the mechanism of gun drill, and then the finite element simulation and processing test are carried out. The results show that the cutting force decreases with the increase of cutting speed, and increases with the increase of feed speed; the error between the theoretical and actual value is less than 10%. Cutting speed and feed speed have a great influence on machining quality, and the cutting fluid pressure mainly affects the surface roughness.

Appropriate selecting of process parameters influences the machining quality greatly. For honing, the main factors are product precision, material components and productivity. In view of this situation, a intelligence selection model for honing parameter based on genetics and artificial neural networks was built by using excellent robustness, fault-tolerance of artificial neural networks optimization process and excellent self-optimum of genetic algorithm. It can simulate the decision making progress of experienced operators, abstract the relationship from process data and machining incidence, realize the purpose of intelligence selection honing parameter through copying, exchanging, aberrance, replacement strategy and neural networks training. Besides, experiment was performed and the results helped optimize the theories model. Both the theory and experiment show the updated level and feasibility of this system.

In this paper, the characteristics and general laws of cutting complex curved surface by wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) system are studied. Based on analysis of motion parameters the universal mathematical model of polar coordinates is derived. Moreover, the simulation of WEDM system is introduced, which is carried out by using language Visual C++ and the three dimensional graph software OpenGL.This simulation method is helpful in improving machining quality and productivity of complex curved surfaces, and is fundation for establishing CAD/CAPP/CAM technology in WEDM.
