In the general framework of the development of materials with tunable photoluminescence, a series of cerium samarium tungstates Ce(2-x)Smx(WO4)3 with x≤0.3 was synthesized by a coprecipitation method followed by thermal treatment at 1000 °C. The polycrystalline compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence experiments. In the present work, the objective would be to determine the role of PL emitting centers in the variations of PL intensities. Firstly, Rietveld analysis showed a decrease of cell parameters and confirmed that a solid solution was obtained. Diffraction profile analyses showed that structural distortions increasing with composition x were observed: they were ascribed to difference in cation sizes of Ce3+ and Sm3+, and to defects generated during crystal growth. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra were obtained under X-Ray (45 kV-35 mA) and UV (364.5 nm) excitations. Two PL emissions of Ce3+ were observed only under UV excitation. Four PL emissions of Sm3+ were observed under UV and X-ray excitations, and their intensities decreased with increasing composition x. Two additional transitions were observed under UV and X-ray excitations: they were attributed to oxygen vacancy defects. In the range 800 to 1000 nm, an increasing IR emission is observed: it was ascribed to emissions due to other oxygen vacancies. The main results are reported in Table 1. The chromaticity diagram (see Figure 1) showed that the colors associated with PL responses vary with Sm composition and excitation energies. This offers the opportunity to develop materials with tunable PL. To better understand this complex behavior, now, we plan to study the solid solution in the composition range x>0.3.

Crystal structures in solid solution of Sm 1+x Ba 2−x Cu 3 O 7−y (X = 0 - 0.4) have been investigated by Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data. The structure changes from orthorhombic to tetragonal at x=0.2. With the increase of x, Tc decreases monotonically from 90 K and the compound becomes semiconducting at x=0.4.

Pr1+xBa2−xCu3O7±δ solid solution was investigated by means of X-ray powder diffraction and Rietveld analysis. Single-phase PrBa2Cu3O7±δ (Pr123) can be synthesized under a Pr-rich condition by sintering at 950 °C in air. The solubility of Pr1+xBa2−xCu3O7±δ solid solution is 0.08≤x≤0.80. The structure of Pr1+xBa2−xCu3O7±δ is orthorhombic for 0.08≤x<0.30, and transforms into tetragonal for 0.30≤x≤0.80. To form single-phase Pr123, the Ba sites in the Pr123 structure are partially occupied by excess Pr ions, and the smallest amount of excess Pr is x=0.08. Meanwhile, all Ba ions stay in the Ba sites.

AbstractRietveld Analysis on X-Ray powder diffraction data was used to build a comprehensive model of the structures in gallmm rich R-Ga systems (R is a rare earth between La and Gd). The ability to refine occupation factors as well as atomic positions allowed for the analysis of the e solid solution, its structural relation to the ordered ∊′ phase, and the unique role of the Ga-Ga pairs in these systems.

Aluminum-copper-silicon thin films have been considered as an interconnection metallurgy for integrated circuit applications. Various schemes have been proposed to incorporate small percent-ages of silicon into films that typically contain two to five percent copper. We undertook a study of the total effect of silicon on the aluminum copper film as revealed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and ion microprobe techniques as a function of the various deposition methods.X-ray investigations noted a change in solid solution concentration as a function of Si content before and after heat-treatment. The amount of solid solution in the Al increased with heat-treatment for films with ≥2% silicon and decreased for films <2% silicon.

Since the early works on GP zones and the model independently proposed by Preston and Guinier on the first steps of precipitation in supersaturated solid solution of aluminium containing a few percent of copper, many works have been performed to understand the structure of different stages in the sequence of precipitation.The scheme which is generally admitted can be drawn from a work by Phillips.In their original model Guinier and Preston analysed a GP zone as composed of a single (100) copperrich plane surrounded by aluminum atomic planes with a slightly shorter distance from the original plane than in the solid solution.From X-ray measurements it has also been shown that GP1 zones were not only copper monolayer zones. They could be up to a few atomic planes thick. Different models were proposed by Guinier, Gerold, Toman. Using synchrotron radiation, proposals have been recently made.

The xerogels in the system 0.88 mol.% ZrO2 − 0.12 mol.% CeO2 were obtained by the method of coprecipitation in a neutral (pH = 7) and slightly alkaline (pH = 9) medium under the influence of ultrasound with the size of the agglomerates 70 – 230 nm. It is shown that the coprecipitation of hydroxides of zirconium and cerium at pH = 9 with the use of ultrasonic treatment facilitates the formation of a primary crystal is symbolic of the particles in the xerogel, whose size is ~ 5 nm, whereas the xerogel synthesized in a neutral environment consists only of the x-ray amorphous phase. The effect of pH-precipitation on deposition processes of dehydration of the xerogels and crystallization solid solution based on zirconia oxide in the metastable pseudocubic modification (с′-ZrO2) was discovered. It was found that in the temperature range 500 – 800 °C there is a phase transition с′-ZrO2 → t-ZrO2, the size of the crystallites of the formed tetragonal solid solutions is 8 and 11 nm. The method of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption were investigated dispersion properties and characteristics of the pore structure of the powders of the solid solution Zr0.88Ce0.12O2. It is determined that the specific surface area of t-ZrO2 samples obtained after firing at 800 °C is 117 and 178 m2/g, the total pore volume reaches 0.300 − 0.325 cm3/g, the pore size distribution is monomodal and is in the range of 2 − 8 nm. The effect of thermal “aging” at a temperature of 800 °C (40 h) on the structure and dispersion of the solid solution t-ZrO2 powders was studied.

AbstractThermodynamic parameters were assessed for the MgO–FeOx system and combined with already available descriptions of ZrO2-FeOx and ZrO2-MgO systems to calculate preliminary phase diagrams for planning experimental investigations. Samples of selected compositions were heat treated at 1523, 1673 and 1873 K and characterized using x-ray and scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX). Experiments indicated extension of cubic ZrO2 solid solution into the ternary system at 1873 K (75 mol.% ZrO2, 10 mol.% FeOx and 15 mol.% MgO) and limited solubility of 4 mol.% ZrO2 in spinel phase. Based on the obtained results thermodynamic parameters of C-ZrO2 and spinel phase were optimized.
