AbstractThe research landscape in the area of forecasting and assessing working conditions has become increasingly difficult to understand. There are plenty of identified reasons, drivers and catchwords to describe a systemic transformation. Individual- and subject-specific approaches to describe and understand the changes to work are being developed in almost every scientific discipline, as well as by (economic) associations and actors in the sociopolitical spheres. Despite all complexity and contradictions, ‘digitalization’ seems to be one focal point when it comes to identifying independent variables to explain the ‘future of work’. The corresponding discussions, analyses, recommendations and scenarios can be found under the well-known headings ‘Work 4.0’, ‘Industry 4.0’, ‘Education 4.0’, ‘Society 4.0’, etc. In addition to systemic descriptions, oftentimes dominated by economics and business management approaches, there are changing individual, subject-inherent perceptual understandings indicating a change in social values with regard to work and its function. Ultimately, for the majority of the population and the (welfare) state, work remains the necessary prerequisite for financially securing their livelihoods.

Purpose of the study: The objective of this study is to identify the benefits and challenges of smart industry concept to the human factor, based on the concept of Industry 4.0.Methodology/approach: A systematic literature review was elaborated, based on structured protocols for the selection of a bibliographic portfolio of articles. A bibliometric analysis of the data and content analysis was performed.Originality/relevance: The article discusses human work, focusing on theoretical and practical contributions of international literature. The focus scenario is smart industry, a concept in constant improvement, which currently has acquired influences from Industry 4.0.Main results: The discussions lead us to ponder on human factor in smart industries in the categories physical and mental health at work, human performance and professional career in general. The conclusions points to the need to ensure adequate working conditions in cognitive and psychic aspects, among others.Theoretical and methodological contributions: We present major literature articles, smart industry definitions, main technologies, and grouping benefits and challenges to the human factor.

On April 15, 2007, the scientific world commemorated Leonhard Euler's 300th birthday. Euler's eminent work has become famous in many fields: mathematics, mechanics, optics, acoustics, astronomy, and geodesy, even in the theory of music. This article will recall his no less distinguished contributions to the founding of the modern theory of ships. These are not so widely known to the general professional public. In laying these foundations in ship theory, as in other fields, Euler was seeking "first principles, generality, order and above all clarity." This article will highlight those achievements for which we owe him our gratitude. There is no doubt that Leonhard Euler was one of the founders of the modern theory of ships. He raised many fundamental questions for the first time and through all phases of his professional lifetime devoted himself to subjects of ship theory. Thereby he gave a unique profile to this still nascent scientific discipline. Many of his approaches have been of lasting, incisive influence on the structure of this field. Some of his ideas have become so much a matter of routine today that we have forgotten their descent from Euler. This article will synoptically review Euler's contributions to the foundation of this discipline, will correlate them with the stages of Euler's own scientific development, embedded in the rich environment of scientific enlightenment in the 18th century, and will appreciate the value of his lasting aftereffects until today. The same example will serve to recognize the fertile field of tension always existing between Euler's fundamental orientation and his desire to make contributions to practical applications, which has remained characteristic of ship theory to the present day. Without claiming completeness in detail, this article aims at giving a coherent overview of Euler's approaches and objectives in this discipline. This synopsis will be presented primarily from the viewpoint of engineering science in its current stage of development.

This chapter addresses the so-called Industry 4.0 and some of its applications in industrial pumps, seeking to emphasize its characteristics and benefits. The introduction of 4.0 industry technologies in this traditional industry can cause profound changes in existing business models, providing greater customer satisfaction, either improving the effectiveness of equipment operation, contributing to better adjustment to working conditions, and also prolonging their life cycle. We are still in the early stages of these technologies and a lot is yet to evolve; however, there are already interesting examples developed by some pump manufacturers around the world, some of which will be mentioned in this chapter. It is subdivided into three main parts, namely brief historical panorama from the first industrial revolution to Industry 4.0, current applications in the industrial pump industry, and finally, future research directions and conclusion.

Measurement of neural tracking of natural running speech from the electroencephalogram (EEG) is an increasingly popular method in auditory neuroscience and has applications in audiology. The method involves decoding the envelope of the speech signal from the EEG signal, and calculating the correlation with the envelope of the audio stream that was presented to the subject. Typically EEG systems with 64 or more electrodes are used. However, in practical applications, set-ups with fewer electrodes are required. Here, we determine the optimal number of electrodes, and the best position to place a limited number of electrodes on the scalp. We propose a channel selection strategy based on an utility metric, which allows a quick quantitative assessment of the influence of a channel (or a group of channels) on the reconstruction error. We consider two use cases: a subject-specific case, where the optimal number and position of the electrodes is determined for each subject individually, and a subject-independent case, where the electrodes are placed at the same positions (in the 10-20 system) for all the subjects. We evaluated our approach using 64-channel EEG data from 90 subjects. In the subject-specific case we found that the correlation between actual and reconstructed envelope first increased with decreasing number of electrodes, with an optimum at around 20 electrodes, yielding 29% higher correlations using the optimal number of electrodes compared to all electrodes. This means that our strategy of removing electrodes can be used to improve the correlation metric in high-density EEG recordings. In the subject-independent case, we obtained a stable decoding performance when decreasing from 64 to 22 channels. When the number of channels was further decreased, the correlation decreased. For a maximal decrease in correlation of 10%, 32 well-placed electrodes were sufficient in 91% of the subjects.

This work analyses the intellectual structure of data mining as a scientific discipline. To do this, we use topic analysis (namely, latent Dirichlet allocation, DLA) applied to the proceedings of the International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM) for 2001–2019. Using this technique, we identified the nine most significant research flows. For each topic, we analyse the dynamics of its popularity (number of publications) and influence (number of citations). The central topic, which unites all other direction, is General Learning, which includes machine learning algorithms. About 20% of the research efforts were spent on the development of this direction for the entire time under review, however, its influence has declined most recently. The analysis also showed that attention to topics such as Pattern Mining (detecting associations) and Segmentation (object separation algorithms such as clustering) is decreasing. At the same time, the popularity of research related to Recommender Systems, Network Analysis, and Human Behaviour Analysis is growing, which is most likely due to the increasing availability of data and the practical value of these topics. The research direction related to practical Applications of data mining also shows a tendency to grow. The last two topics, Text Mining and Data Streams have attracted steady interest from researchers. The results presented here shed light on the structure and trends of data mining over the past twenty years and allow us to expand our understanding of this scientific discipline. We can argue that in the last five years a new research agenda has been formed, which is characterized by a shift in interest from algorithms to practical applications that affect all aspects of human activity.

Subject of research: model of increasing the competitiveness of the national economy. The purpose of the study: develop a model for increasing the competitiveness of the national economy based on a neocluster approach. Research objectives: to develop the concept of a neocluster; to build a logical scheme for the formation of the competitiveness of the national economy on the basis of a neocluster approach. Methodology and research methods. General scientific and special methods of cognition: analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, a systematic approach were used to conduct the research. A neocluster concept has been developed, which includes the concept of a neocluster, distinctive features, and a structural diagram of a neocluster. A model for increasing the competitiveness of the economy of a country / region has been built on the basis of a neocluster approach and a mechanism for increasing the country's competitiveness has been substantiated. The causal relationships between the sources of competitiveness are identified: (elements of Industry 4.0), directions and factors of increasing competitiveness. The developed theoretical foundations of the neocluster and the logical model for increasing the competitiveness of the national economy based on the neocluster approach can serve as a theoretical and methodological basis for the formation of a neocluster policy.
