AbstractTravel planning is a long and tedious process for tourists since it requires processing a vast amount of information. Recommender systems can be used to facilitate the process of scoring points-of-interests (POIs) according to the travelers’ interests and creating feasible itineraries. However, itinerary planning is personal and each itinerary created must reflect the interest of the traveler as well as his/her travel style. In this paper, we extend the creation of multi-day round trip itineraries by adding different personalization options such as the pace of the traveler and diversity level of the route. The information about the travel style of the user is used to personalize the visiting duration of each POI and to create routes for each day that follow the constraints defined by users. We conducted a user study through a mobile application and the results show that the added personalization options improved the recommended multi-day round trip walking tours from a user’s perspective.

Nowadays travel and tourism Web sites store and offer a large volume of travel related information and services. Furthermore, this huge amount of information can be easily accessed using mobile devices, such as a phone with mobile Internet connection capability. However, this information can easily overwhelm a user because of the large number of information items to be shown and the limited screen size in the mobile device. Recommender systems (RSs) are often used in conjunction with Web tools to effectively help users in accessing this overwhelming amount of information. These recommender systems can support the user in making a decision even when specific knowledge necessary to autonomously evaluate the offerings is not available. Recommender systems cope with the information overload problem by providing a user with personalized recommendations (i.e., a well chosen selection of the items contained in the repository), adapting this selection to the user’s needs and preferences in a particular usage context. In this chapter, the authors present a recommendation approach integrating a conversational preference acquisition technology based on “critiquing” with map visualization technologies to build a new map-based conversational mobile RS that can effectively and intuitively support travelers in finding their desired products and services. The results of the authors’ real-user study show that integrating map-based visualization and critiquing-based interaction in mobile RSs improves the system’s recommendation effectiveness, and increases the user satisfaction.

The rapidly growing interest in healthy lifestyles and the health benefit of foods and the growing tea-consuming population are driving the growth of the tea industry. In particular, the growing preference among Millennials for premium blended tea is leading the growth of the tea market. In this paper, we study the feasibility of recommendation services for blended tea, which has not been addressed well by existing recommender systems. To this end, we design TeaPickTM, a mobile application that suggests a blend of tea suited to the user’s preferences including desired health benefits. To evaluate the application and its recommendations, we conduct not only a usability test, but also a consumer acceptance test with 31 participants. Our user study shows that the participants were positive about the recommendation service provided by our application and were generally satisfied with the recommended tea.

Purpose Collaborative information searching is common for people when planning their group trip. However, little research has explored how tourists collaborate during information search. Existing tourism Web portals or search engines rarely support tourists’ collaborative information search activities. Taking advantage of previous studies of collaborative tourism information search behavior, in the current paper the purpose of this paper is to propose the design of a collaborative search system collaborative tourism information search (ColTIS) to support online information search and travel planning. Design/methodology/approach ColTIS was evaluated and compared with Google Talk-embedded Tripadvisor.com through a user study involving 18 pairs of participants. The data included pre- and post-search questionnaires, web search logs and chat history. For quantitative measurement, statistical analysis was performed using SPSS; for log data and the qualitative feedback from participants, the content analysis was employed. Findings Results suggest that collaborative query formulation, division of search tasks, chatting and results sharing are important means to facilitate tourists’ collaborative search. ColTIS was found to outperform Tripadvisor significantly regarding the ease of use, collaborative support and system usefulness. Originality/value The innovation of the study lies in the development of an integrated real-time collaborative tourism information search system with unique features. These features include collaborative query reformulation, travel planner and automatic result and query sharing that assist multiple people search for holiday information together. For system designers and tourism practitioners, implications are provided.

Collaborative and content-based recommender systems are widely employed in several activity domains helping users in finding relevant products and services (i.e., items). However, with the increasing features of items, the users are getting more demanding in their requirements, and these recommender systems are becoming not able to be efficient for this purpose. Built on knowledge bases about users and items, constraint-based recommender systems (CBRSs) come to meet the complex user requirements. Nevertheless, this kind of recommender systems witnesses a rarity in research and remains underutilised, essentially due to difficulties in knowledge acquisition and/or in their software engineering. This paper details a generic software architecture for the CBRSs development. Accordingly, a prototype mobile application called DATAtourist has been realized using DATAtourisme ontology as a recent real-world knowledge source in tourism. The DATAtourist evaluation under varied usage scenarios has demonstrated its usability and reliability to recommend personalized touristic points of interest.

В статье рассмотрены способы устранения негативного влияния основных факторов, способствующих созданию дефицита воды для орошения. Проведен анализ схемы, в которой целью мероприятий является эффективное вложение средств при восстановлении элементов гидромелиоративных систем и обеспечение рационализации водопользования. Установлено, что алгоритмы и конечные выводы, подученные в ходе анализа, могут различаться в зависимости от поставленных задач и объема информации.Water availability of the reclamation complex facilities is crucial in ensuring high and sustainable crop yields in the arid regions of the country. The article discusses ways to eliminate the negative impact of the main factors contributing to the creation of a shortage of water for irrigation. The analysis of the scheme in which the purpose of the measures is an effective investment in the restoration of elements of irrigation and drainage systems and ensuring the rationalization of water use is carried out. It is established that the algorithms and final conclusions obtained during the analysis may vary depending on the tasks and the amount of information.

AbstractSemantic technologies provide meaning to information resources in the form of machine-accessible structured data. Research over the past two decades has commonly focused on tools and interfaces for technical experts, leading to various usability problems regarding users unfamiliar with the underlying technologies – so-called nontechnical experts. Existing approaches to semantic technologies consider mostly consumers of structured data and leave out the creation perspective. In this work, we focus on the usability of creating structured data from textual resources, especially the creation of relations between entities. The research was conducted in collaboration with scholars from the humanities. We review existing research on the usability of semantic technologies and the state of the art of annotation tools to identify shortcomings. Subsequently we use the knowledge gained to propose a new interaction design for the creation of relations between entities to create structured data in the subject-predicate-object form. We implemented our interaction design and conducted a user study which showed that the proposal performed well, making it a contribution to enhance the overall usability in this field. However, this research provides an example of how technically sophisticated technology needs to be “translated” to make it usable for nontechnical experts. We need to extend this perspective in the future by providing more insight into the internal functioning of semantic technologies.

Despite the convenience offered by e-commerce, online apparel shopping presents various product-related risks, as consumers can neither physically see nor try products on themselves. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies have been used to improve the shopping online experience. Therefore, we propose an AR- and VR-based try-on system that provides users a novel shopping experience where they can view garments fitted onto their personalized virtual body. Recorded personalized motions are used to allow users to dynamically interact with their dressed virtual body in AR. We conducted two user studies to compare the different roles of VR- and AR-based try-ons and validate the impact of personalized motions on the virtual try-on experience. In the first user study, the mobile application with the AR- and VR-based try-on is compared to a traditional e-commerce interface. In the second user study, personalized avatars with pre-defined motion and personalized motion is compared to a personalized no-motion avatar with AR-based try-on. The result shows that AR- and VR-based try-ons can positively influence the shopping experience, compared with the traditional e-commerce interface. Overall, AR-based try-on provides a better and more realistic garment visualization than VR-based try-on. In addition, we found that personalized motions do not directly affect the user’s shopping experience.

The aim of the study was to answer the question about the effectiveness of academic libraries’ Internet usage to meet the needs of the users. Based on previous research we established what the main functions fulfilled by libraries’ websites are and subsequently we verified the extent to which the website of the University of Warsaw Library (UW Library) fulfilled those functions in students’ opinions. The empirical part of the research we conducted using the eyetracking method. The results indicated that the location of the various elements on the page, in many cases, caused the problems for users. Students attach great importance to digital collections and to information which supports the efficient use of library resources, meanwhile the large amount of information on the UW Library website was associated with the creation of its digital business card - defined the institution itself. To conclude, analysis of the content on the UW Library website indicates that the site is used both as a tool for the promotion of the Library, as well as space for users’ services. The results show the need for further work on improving the second of these functions.

AbstractRNA sequencing (RNA-seq) is a powerful technology for identification of novel transcripts (coding, non-coding and splice variants), understanding of transcript structures and estimation of gene and/or allelic expression. There are specific challenges that biologists face in determining the number of replicates to use, total number of sequencing reads to generate for detecting marginally differentially expressed transcripts and the number of lanes in a sequencing flow cell to use for the production of right amount of information. Although past studies attempted answering some of these questions, there is a lack of accessible and biologist-friendly mobile applications to answer these questions. Keeping this in mind, we have developed RNAtor, a mobile application for Android platforms, to aid biologists in correctly designing their RNA-seq experiments. The recommendations from RNAtor are based on simulations and real data.Availability and ImplementationThe Android version of RNAtor is available on Google Play Store and the code from GitHub (https://github.com/binaypanda/RNAtor).
