AbstractThis article discusses the development of compact and functionally integrated urban environments from the perspective of local residents, focusing on their psychological evaluations of mixed land use and performance-based regulation. It demonstrates the significance of residents’ perceptions and attitudes in the achievement of flexibility required for urban planning in a shrinking society. To promote planned concentration of various functions in an urban area in an appropriate way, as in the development of compact cities in a multi-polar network advocated by the Location Normalization Plan, it will have more importance than ever to conceive planning that takes the characteristics of both a region and its residents into account.

Assessing transport CO2 emissions is important in the development of low-carbon strategies, but studies based on mixed land use are rare. This study assessed CO2 emissions from passenger transport in traffic analysis zones (TAZs) at the community level, based on a combination of the mixed-use development model and the vehicle emission calculation model. Based on mixed land use and transport accessibility, the mixed-use development model was adopted to estimate travel demand, including travel modes and distances. As a leading low-carbon city project of international cooperation in China, Shenzhen International Low-Carbon City Core Area was chosen as a case study. The results clearly illustrate travel demand and CO2 emissions of different travel modes between communities and show that car trips account for the vast majority of emissions in all types of travel modes in each community. Spatial emission differences are prominently associated with inadequately mixed land use layouts and unbalanced transport accessibility. The findings demonstrate the significance of the mixed land use and associated job-housing balance in reducing passenger CO2 emissions from passenger transport, especially in per capita emissions. Policy implications are given based on the results to facilitate sophisticated transport emission control at a finer spatial scale. This new framework can be used for assessing the impacts of urban planning on transport emissions to promote sustainable urbanization in developing countries.

The problem of urban planning in the context of globalization and the intensification of urban growth is considered in the context of sustainable development. Under UN-Habitat regulations, urban development must be in line with five principles: compactness, high density, mixed use, variety, limited land-use specialization. Compact urban development is a model for sustainable urban development, based on the synergy of three main dimensions: social, economic and environmental. In contrast to the approach to territorial zoning, the compact city model pays attention not only to the development of mixed land use, but also to social needs in places of employment, leisure, recreation, as well as the need for economic resources. In order to identify strategies for designing a sustainable architectural and planning structure, theoretical approaches to the practice of urban planning are investigated. Implementation of the provisions of UN-Habitat is aimed at reducing energy consumption and harmful emissions, preserving biodiversity, reducing the cost of infrastructure and increasing labor productivity, which helps to achieve a balance of social, economic and environmental goals of sustainable development.

The food-energy-water (FEW) nexus approach has emerged as an alternative for managing these resources more efficiently. Work from studies conducted in the FEW nexus in Latin America is scarce in the scholarly literature. This study aims to develop a framework for water management at the FEW Nexus, with a focus on Colombia. The study focuses on a typical mixed land-use watershed in the Andean region with specific objectives being to: (1) characterize the watershed with respect to land use, climate, water resources, and other factors pertinent to the nexus; (2) explore the relationship between factors in the FEW nexus that may affect water management in terms of quality and availability; and (3) propose a methodology for conducting a FEW Nexus analysis for watersheds located in the Andean region. The results indicate that the Pereira/Dosquebradas urban area has a significant impact on the FEW nexus components in the Otun River Watershed (ORW). Subsequently, an urban FEW nexus framework is proposed for its implementation at the watershed.

Spatial analysis of current land use provides useful insight on urban development trend specifically in measuring sprawl growth. Remote sensing and GIS technologies were applied in this research to measure the phases of segregated urban sprawl growth, focusing on the aspect of mixed land use planning. The findings proved that Kuala Lumpur is currently facing segregated land use sprawl based on the measurement derived from one of LUGI component. This type of sprawl transpired within the residential zone in Kuala Lumpur city, demoting mixed-use development by unravelling different classes of land uses into singleuses, thus promoting high dependency on motorised vehicle and discouraging public and pedestrian modes of transportation. The transit-oriented development is one of necessary approaches to control segregated sprawl and promotes mixed-use development in housing areas within the city.

<p>A presente pesquisa objetivou verificar as taxas de impermeabilização e tempo de concentração das sub-bacias presentes na área urbana de Barra do Garças – MT, Pontal do Araguaia – MT e Aragarças – GO. Tais variáveis podem auxiliar no ordenamento territorial da expansão urbana, bem como no planejamento urbano dessas cidades. Os resultados demonstraram que nas áreas já urbanizadas, o grau de impermeabilização e tempo de concentração das sub-bacias apresentaram  níveis considerados “médios e altos”, o que é preocupante, devido a relação dessas variáreis ao crescimento das vazões e volume escoado, e, consequentemente, aumento da frequência de inundações. Medidas não-estruturais, como legislação de uso do solo, com regras e incentivo para aumento de áreas permeáveis em lotes, bem como implantação de soluções alternativas de drenagem urbana que promovam o retardamento das águas pluviais, são soluções que podem ser implementadas na área em estudo.</p><p align="center"><strong><em>Analysis of the waterproofing rate and time of concentration in urban sub-basins of Barra do Garças – MT, Pontal do Araguaia – MT e Aragarças – GO</em></strong></p><p><strong>Abstract</strong><strong>: </strong>This study aimed to verify the waterproofing rates and time of concentration of these sub-basins present in the urban area of Barra do Garças – MT, Pontal do Araguaia – MT e Aragarças – GO. Such variables can assist in land use of urban expansion and the urban planning of these cities. The results demonstrated that in urban areas already, the degree of waterproofing and time of concentration of the sub-basins presented levels considered "medium and high", which is worrying, because the relationship of these variables to the growth of flows and runoff, and, consequently, increased frequency of floods. Non-structural measures such as land use legislation, with rules and incentive to increase permeable areas on lots, and implementation of alternative solutions to urban drainage that promote the slowing of rainwater, are solutions that can be implemented in the study area.</p>

As one of the rapidly-developing mega cities in China, Hangzhou has experienced great land use change during the past three decades. By analyzing land use change in designated period, it is beneficial to understand urbanization process in Hangzhou, and undertake further urban management and urban planning. In this study, the land use change from 1990 to 2017 in Hangzhou urban area was detected by a method of supervised classification with Landsat TM images from 1990, 1997, 2004, 2010 and 2017, and analyzed by a Markov matrix. The results show that from 1990 to 2017, a great deal of rural areas transformed into built up areas in the Hangzhou urban area. Consequently, the urban area of Hangzhou increased eight times over the period from 1990 to 2017. This may imply that such a change should be directly related to the Chinese government policy, of which the main factor is rapidly-developing urbanization in China, such as in Hangzhou. Thus, it is believed that China’s land use change is going to be small in the following decades. This may indicate that China’s urban construction is slowing down, while its urban planning is being shifted from construction to management.

The staggering complexity of urban environment and long timescales in the causal mechanisms prevent designers to fully understand the implications of their design interventions. In order to investigate these causal mechanisms and provide measurable trends, a model that partially replicates urban complexity has been developed. Using a cellular automata approach to model land use types and markets for products, services, labour and property, the model has enabled numerical experiments to be carried out. The results revealed causal mechanisms and performance metrics obtained in a much shorter timescale than the real-life processes, pointing to a number of design implications for urban environments.
