Abstract The effect of growth site type, felling season, storage time and kiln drying on the contents and distributions of phenolic extractives and low molar mass carbohydrates in secondary xylem of silver birch Betula pendula was studied. The results indicated that the total amount of methanol-soluble extractives did not change markedly under the prevailing conditions of the study. However, the contents of phenolic compounds, (+)-catechin and (+)-catechin-7-O-β-D-xylopyranoside, and low molar mass sugars, D(+)-xylose, D(−)-fructose, D(+)-glucose, sucrose, maltose and raffinose, changed with season, storage time, radial location in the stem or growth site type. The glycosidic bond in (+)-catechin-7-O-β-D-xylopyranoside, sucrose, maltose and raffinose was hydrolysed with kiln drying, resulting in elevated contents of the monosaccharides, D(+)-xylose, D(−)-fructose, D(+)-glucose, in kiln dried boards. Surprisingly, the content of (+)-catechin did not increase simultaneously with the breakdown of (+)-catechin-7-O-β-D-xylopyranoside, indicating that (+)-catechin may polymerise or have another bonding pattern with other wood components due to elevated temperatures during kiln drying. In addition, the relative amount of phenolic compounds, (+)-catechin monomer and its glycoside, (+)-catechin-7-O-β-D-xylopyranoside, in the methanol extracts decreased with partial vacuum drying.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of anatomical characteristics on the adhesion performance of Vatairea sp., Paulownia sp., Aspidosperma populifolium and Tectona grandis wood. Specimens for anatomical, physical and mechanical analyzes were produced from tangentially oriented boards. The treatments were joint glued from pieces of the same anatomical orientation (radial and tangential), evaluated for shear strength and glue line failure. The Vatairea sp wood had the highest specific gravity (0.74 g cm-3) and the Paulownia sp (0.34 g cm-3) wood was smaller. Aspidosperma populifolium species showed the highest shear strength in the glue line in the tangential and radial faces. The anatomical variables with higher influence on the wood adhesion process were pith ray cells and especially fibers that exhibit the greatest correlation with the shear strength of the glue line.

Healthcare associated infection is one of the common infection that happens in Indonesia. One form control to prevent healthcare associated infection is the sterilization process of the materials and medical instruments that used for taking care of patients. At the private hospital whereas a place of research, there’s never been done the study of sterility test for reusable instrument with pouches, based on previous studies showed that 8 sets from 40 sets of reusable instrument with linen were not sterile moreover there were positively influence from the amount of time to the sterility of reusable instrument. The purpose of these studies was to determining the relationship between a long storage time and the sterility of reusable instruments with pouches. The method that used in this study was the sterility testing of reusable instrument with pouches which were stored in a central operations room storage with a long storage time of 1 and 2 months. From 30 reusable instruments with pouches which were stored for nine months there were 5 instruments were not sterile. The results of statistic analysis showed that the amount of storage time not significantly associated to the sterility of reusable instrument with pouches in the operating room central storage space.

The scarcity of safe drinking water is one of the problems faced by the majority of cities in the world. Kirkuk city is one of these cities, which suffer from a shortage of drinking water. People have adopted the use of different rooftop tanks to overcome this problem. This research focuses on studying the effect of storage time on the five main characteristics of drinking water, which include, acid index (pH), electrical conductivity (EC), total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), and turbidity (Tr). Three types of tanks were used predominantly (galvanized metal, plastic, and aluminum tanks). By analyzing the results, the characteristics of three samples of municipal source water obtained. Three samples were taken from each tank at different periods (4, 8, and 12 days). The results showed that the storage time affected the characteristics of drinking water. These characteristics differed from one tank to another. Metal tanks showed an increase in total dissolved solids, due to the evaporation process, even as plastic and aluminum tanks showed an increase in pH. The properties of all storage water tanks changed with times, but overall, the results were within the Iraqi limitation for drinking water. It was not easy to only depend on the results of this study to believe that any one type of water tank was better than the other, as the values of most of the variables studied had varied from one type to other. However, many studies have indicated a number of health risks, and most significantly with regard to plastic tanks, which are said to contain dangerous organic compounds that can be transferred to water. Metal tanks can cause zinc leakage, caused by a number of environmental factors at high levels. Aluminum tanks also can have an effect on the water in tanks.

Mango fruits `Criollo de Bocado' harvested at the mature-green stage were treated with a hydrothermic treatment of 55 °C for 3 min and stored for 20 days at temperatures of 10 ± 2, 15 ± 2 and 28 ± 2 °C. A randomized design 2 × 3 × 4 with three replications was used. Some chemical parameters were analyzed, such as total soluble solids content (% TSS), pH, tritatable acidity, and TSS/tritatable acidity ratio. TSS content increased with storage time at low temperature. The pH increased measurably with storage temperature, while tritatable acidity values results had inconsistent data.
