Abstract Experimental tests were conducted to determine the failure characteristics of simplified box-type wing structures loaded dynamically, as compared to those of similar beams loaded statically. It was found that under dynamic loading, of the type applied, failure occurred at essentially the same loads and deflections observed at failure under static loading conditions. Tip deflections and accelerations were calculated using the force-deflection relationship determined by static loading, and compared to measured values. Agreement between measured and calculated values was only fair.

Abstract Lower limb injuries caused by under-foot impacts often appear in sport landing, automobile collision, and anti-vehicular landmine blasts. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate a foot-ankle-leg model of the Human Active Lower Limb (HALL) model, and used it to investigate lower leg injury responses in different under-foot loading environments to provide a theoretical basis for the design of physical dummies adapted to multiple loading conditions. The model was first validated in allowable rotation loading conditions, like dorsiflexion, inversion/eversion, and external rotation. Then, its sensitivity to loading rates and initial postures was further verified through experimental data concerning both biomechanical stiffness and injury locations. Finally, the model was used to investigate the biomechanical responses of the foot-ankle-leg region in different under-foot loading conditions covering the loading rate from sport landing to blast impact. The results showed that from -15° plantarflexion to 30° dorsiflexion, the neutral posture always showed the largest tolerance, and more than 1.5 times tolerance gap was achieved between neutral posture and dorsiflexion 30°. Under-foot impacts from 2 m/s to 14 m/s, the peak tibia force increased at least 1.9 times in all postures. Thus, we consider that it is necessary to include initial posture and loading rate factors in the definition of the foot-ankle-leg injury tolerance for under-foot impact loading.

Among all other stress states achievable under plane stress conditions, the lowest ductility is consistently observed for plane strain tension. For static loading conditions, V-bending of small sheet coupons is the most reliable way of characterising the strain to fracture for plane strain tension. Different from conventional notched tension specimens, necking is suppressed during V-bending which results in a remarkably constant stress state all the way until fracture initiation. The present DYMAT talk is concerned with the extension of the V-bending technique from low to high strain rate experiments. A new technique is designed with the help of finite element simulations. It makes use of modified Nakazima specimens that are subjected to V-bending. Irrespective of the loading velocity, plane strain tension conditions are maintained throughout the entire loading history up to fracture initiation. Experiments are performed on specimens extracted from aluminum 2024-T3 and dual phase DP450 steel sheets. The experimental program includes quasi static loading conditions which are achieved on a universal testing machine. In addition, high strain rate experiments are performed using a specially-designed drop tower system. In all experiments, images are acquired with two cameras to determine the surface strain history through stereo Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The experimental observations are discussed in detail and also compared with the numerical simulations to validate the proposed experimental technique

A hybrid finite-discrete element method (FDEM) is proposed to model rock fracture initiation and propagation during a three-point bending test under quasistatic and dynamic loading conditions. Three fracture models have been implemented in the FDEM to model the transition from continuum to discontinuum through fracture and fragmentation. The loading rate effect on rock behaviour has been taken into account by the implementation of the relationship between the static and dynamic rock strengths derived from dynamic rock fracture experiments. The Brazilian tensile strength test has been modelled to calibrate the FDEM. The FDEM can well model the stress and fracture propagation and well show the stress distribution along the vertical diameter of the disc during the Brazilian tensile strength test. Then, FDEM is implemented to study the rock fracture process during three-point bending tests under quasistatic and dynamic loading conditions. The FDEM has well modelled the stress and fracture propagation and can obtain reasonable fracture toughness. After that, the effects of the loading rate on the rock strength and rock fracture toughness are discussed, and the mesh size and mesh orientation on the fracture patterns are also discussed. It is concluded that the FDEM can well model the rock fracture process by the implementation of the three fracture models. The FDEM can capture the loading rate effect on rock strength and rock fracture toughness. The FDEM is a valuable tool for studying the rock behaviour on the dynamic loading although the proposed method is sensitive to the mesh size and mesh orientation.

A coal-rock (CR) combined body can be used to simulate structures of coal and rock strata, and its impact-induced failure characteristic conforms more close to engineering practice. Exploring the mechanical properties and impact energy in a CR combined body contributes to better predictions of rock bursts in coal mines. In the study, the mechanical properties of CR combined bodies with four different inclinations (0°, 15°, 30°, and 45°) of structural planes were measured, and also their failure mechanism was analysed. Based on the theory of particle mechanics, a calculation model for impact energy in a CR combined body with inclinations was established and then verified by using monitored acoustic emission (AE) data. The test results showed that inclination affected mechanical properties and failure characteristics of the CR combined body, i.e., the larger the inclination, the lower the strength and impact energy in the CR combined body and the lower the level of damage. The proposed calculation model for impact energy revealed the mechanical essence of energy accumulation and release of a CR combined body, providing a reference for investigating rock burst in coal mines.

The fracture behavior of a Zr -based bulk amorphous metal under impact loading using subsize V-shaped Charpy specimens was investigated. Influences of loading rate on the fracture behavior of amorphous Zr - Al - Ni - Cu alloy were examined. As a result, the maximum load and absorbed fracture energy under impact loading were lower than those under quasi-static loading. A large part of the absorbed fracture energy in the Zr -based BMG was consumed in the process for crack initiation and not for crack propagation. In addition, fractographic characteristics of BMGs, especially the initiation and development of shear bands at the notch tip were investigated. Fractured surfaces under impact loading are smoother than those under quasi-static loading. The absorbed fracture energy appeared differently depending on the appearance of the shear bands developed. It can be found that the fracture energy and fracture toughness of Zr -based BMG are closely related with the extent of shear bands developed during fracture.
