Chicken stomachs can be processed into collagen hydrolysate usable in cosmetic products. The aim of the study was to verify the effects of a carbopol gel formulation enriched with 1.0% (w/w) chicken hydrolysate on the properties of the skin in the periorbital area after regular application twice a day for eight weeks in volunteers ageed 50 ± 9 years. Skin hydration, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin elasticity and skin relief were evaluated. Overall, skin hydration increased by 11.82% and 9.45%, TEWL decreased by 25.70% and 17.80% (always reported for the right and left area). Generally, there was an increase in skin elasticity, a decrease in skin roughness, as the resonance times decreased by 85%. The average reduction of wrinkles was 35.40% on the right and 41.20% on the left. For all results, it can be seen that the longer the cosmetic gel formulation is applied, the better the results. Due to the positive effect on the quality and functionality of the skin, it is possible to apply the cosmetic gel formulation in the periorbital area. The advantage of the product with chicken collagen hydrolysate is also the biocompatibility with the skin and the biodegradability of the formulation.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that is characterized by increasing loss of cartilage, remodeling of the periarticular bone, and inflammation of the synovial membrane. Besides the common OA therapy with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the treatment with chondroprotectives, such as glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, collagen hydrolysate, or nutrients, such as antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids is a promising therapeutic approach. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that the targeted administration of selected micronutrients leads to a more effective reduction of OA symptoms, with less adverse events. Their chondroprotective action can be explained by a dual mechanism: (1) as basic components of cartilage and synovial fluid, they stimulate the anabolic process of the cartilage metabolism; (2) their anti-inflammatory action can delay many inflammation-induced catabolic processes in the cartilage. These two mechanisms are able to slow the progression of cartilage destruction and may help to regenerate the joint structure, leading to reduced pain and increased mobility of the affected joint.

Abstract In this study, a novel feather-degrading bacteria B. amyloliquefaciens KB1 was isolated from chicken farm bed (CFB), identified by morphological, physico-biochemical tests followed by 16s rDNA analysis. Among observed isolates, bacterial isolate (KB1) showed the highest degree of feather degradation (74.78 ± 2.94 %) and total soluble protein (205 ± 0.03 mg/ g). Using the same species of bacteria, the optimum fermentation condition was found at 40 oC, pH 9, and 1 % (w/v) feather concentration that produced 260 mg/ g of soluble protein and 86.16 % feather degradation using response surface methodology in a Box-Behnken design space. The obtained hydrolysates exhibited bioactive properties. The amino acid profile showed the increase in concentration of essential amino acid compared with feather meal broth. The selection of safe screening source of this new bacteria in CFB produced hydrolysates with enhanced bioactivity applicable for food, feed, and cosmetic applications along with environmental remediation.

AbstractThis study attempts to identify the significant role played by the secondary structure of collagen-derived peptides that are involved in lipid peroxide quenching in food products. Collagen was extracted from the skin of Perch and swim bladder of Rohu at 45-78% efficiency. It was identified as type-I based on a high molecular weight (110kDa) and its ion-exchange elution profile. The collagen samples were enzymatically hydrolyzed and collagen hydrolysate (CH) was extracted with an efficiency of 0.67-0.74g/g of collagen. The CH samples displayed a molecular weight in the range of 8.2-9.7kDa and exhibited a higher abundance of charges resulting in higher solubility. The structural studies revealed that the CH peptides existed in polyproline-II helix and formed a mimic-triple helix in a wide range of pH. In neutral and alkaline pH, the mimic helices joined to form a hierarchical quasi-fibrillar network that was smaller than collagen fibrils but also more dynamic. The CH exhibited >95% degradation in 15h through simulated digestion. The CH were able to decrease peroxide formation by 84.5-98.9% in commercially available cod liver and almond oil and increased the shelf life of soya bean oil by a factor of 5 after 6 months of storage. The addition of CH to cultured cells quenched peroxide ions generated in situ and decreased stressor activity by a factor of 12. The reason behind the high efficacy of CH was deciphered to be the proximal charge stabilization by the quasi-fibrillar network, which allowed efficient peroxide quenching and long-term stability.
