The production processes of the metalworking industry are usually carried out in the presence of oxygen. Par ticularly due to surface oxidation on tools and parts during production under normal atmosphere, high wear is observed in tribological systems. The focus of these investigations is the question to what extent the ambient atmosphere has an influence on the tribological system. For this purpose, the identification and characterization of wear mechanisms in an oxygen-free atmosphere is of high relevance. To analyse the influence of the ambi ent atmosphere on the tribological properties of titanium, ball-on-disc investigations are carried out on a univer sal tribometer (UMT) in an air, argon and silane-anodized atmosphere. By suppressing the oxidation under ex clusion of oxygen, a reduction of the tribochemical wear could be shown, which is accompanied by a reduction of the wear volume by a Factor of 4.5. However, due to the adhesion of both friction partners, which already occurs at low temperatures, caused by the omission of the friction-reducing cover layers, the friction coefficient increased. In addition, novel alloy formations at the interfaces were detected and analysed.

ABSTRACTA series of cerium-containing CoSb3 samples were synthesized, with cerium quantities varying from 0 to 2 stoichiometric equivalents. These samples were annealed at low temperatures to crystallize the kinetically stable phases CexCo4Sb12 (x = 0–0.5). X-ray diffraction showed that these samples were phase pure, and Rietveld analysis on x-ray diffraction data from powder samples indicated that these samples were 25–88% crystalline. Electrical measurements showed that these samples are n-type, which was previously unknown in CexCo4Sb12. Magnetic measurements showed that the samples were paramagnetic due to the cerium being incorporated into the diamagnetic CoSb3 compound. In addition, they contained a ferromagnetic component that was attributed to the amorphous, cerium-containing phase.

The effect of temperature on genetically well-defined mutational pathways was examined in the bacteriophage T4. The mutational site was a T4 rII ochre mutant which could revert to rII+ via a transversion or to the amber convertant via a transition. Temperature did not strongly affect any of the pathways examined in a wild-type background; however, increased temperature reduced the mutational activity of a mutator DNA polymerase mutant. Possible models to explain the role of temperature in mutagenesis are discussed as well as the significance of low temperatures for in vitro mutagenesis reactions.Key words: bacteriophage T4, mutator, transition, transversion, temperature effects.
