Abstract Hikikomori is a Japanese term for social withdrawal, ranging from complete inability to venture outdoors to preferring to stay inside. The prevalence of hikikomori is high, up to 1.2% of the Japanese population, but only few studies have examined its emergence in adolescents. Therefore, we sought to identify environmental and psycho-behavioral characteristics related to hikikomori during adolescence. Parents of middle school students who underwent psychiatric outpatient treatment for hikikomori (n = 20) and control group parents (n = 88) completed the Child Behavior Checklist to evaluate their child’s psycho-behavioral characteristics and novel scales to evaluate environmental characteristics and hikikomori severity. Scores for all eight Child Behavior Checklist subscales were significantly higher in the experimental group. Multiple regression analysis revealed that “anxious/depressed,” “somatic complaints,” “lack of communication between parents” and “overuse of the Internet” were significant predictors of hikikomori severity. These findings can help identify individuals who are at risk of developing hikikomori.

The concepts of weather events and climate appear to be less studied than other concepts of physics in the literature. The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of computer-based instruction on the concepts of climate and weather events of middle school students. The sample of the research consisted of 19 8th grade students in the experimental group and 23 students in the control group. Computer-based instruction was carried out in the experimental group, and lessons were given in accordance with the middle school science program with the students in the control group. As a data collection tool, a concept test consisting of three open-ended questions was used to determine students' opinions about climate, weather events and the difference between climate and weather events. In the analysis of the data obtained from the answers of the students in the experimental and control groups to open-ended questions before and after the instruction, a rubric consisting of five categories was used. The categories in the rubric are correct answer, incorrect answer, non-coded and no answer categories. According to the findings, it was seen that the scientific responses of the students in both groups increased. Computer-based instruction was found to be more effective in eliminating the misconceptions faced by students about climate, weather events and differences between climate and weather events compared to the courses taught in the program. In the results of the study, it was determined that the students in the experimental and control groups confused the concepts of climate and weather events before instruction and there was a decrease in the misconceptions after instruction. The misconception that climate and weather events were the same was resolved in both groups after instruction. It is suggested that more studies using different instruction methods for teaching these concepts will be conducted. This research aims to know the influence of guided inquiry learning with flash based Invertebramedia on the learning outcome of senior high school students. The research was done in SMA N 1 Pamotan using Quasi Experimental Design. The sample of the study was X MIPA 1 class (experimental group) and X MIPA 2 class (control group) which was taken by purposive sampling technique. The results showed that there were increasing of cognitive’s learning outcome of the experiment group was 80% and control group was 34.2%. There was a significant difference in the average of cognitive learning outcomes of the experimental group and control group. Analysis of affective and psychomotor aspects showed that learning outcome the experimental group higher that the control group. So, the activity of students during learning process was enchancement. The average of the student’s questionnaire responses after joining the learning was 84.9% in good criteria. The teacher and the students also gave good responses on the implementation of the learning in general. The conclusion of the research is the application of guided inquiry learning with Invertebramedia based on flash influence on high school student’s learning outcomes.

Cyber bullying is the unwise use of technology to harm and humiliate an individual or group over the Internet. The purpose of this article is to test the effectiveness of the cyber bullying sensitisation program (CBSP) to reduce the level of cyber bullying behaviour among middle school students. The sample was restricted to adolescents as they are the ones who are most exposed and vulnerable in the cyber space. A quasi-experimental pre-post design with intervention was adopted for the study. The participants of the study were comprised of 186 middle school students from two private schools in India. The experimental group had 94 participants while control groups had 92 participants. Statistical analysis indicated that there was a significant difference between pre- and post-test scores in the experimental group. No significant difference was found between the experiment and control group before the program, suggesting that the program was effective in helping students in reducing cyber bullying behaviour. The implications for prevention and intervention programs were discussed.

In this study, it was investigated that effect of games including physical activity on digital game addiction of 11-14 age group middle-school students. Along with the determination of digital game addiction, conducting applied experimental study is important regarding showing results of application with theoretical knowledge towards solving problem. Within this framework, it was thought that “games including physical activity” will be important tool for decreasing the level of digital game addiction. Experimental Design method was used in the study in which was adopted Quantitative Research model. When 11-14 age group students who addicted digital games consisted of the population of the study, the sample of the study consisted of 29 girls and 51 boys who have studied. In the study, personal information form and digital game addiction scale that was developed by the researcher were used as measurement tools. During data collection period, by accepting applied pre-test to students as criterion sample process, students who have high addiction level (total scale score is 49 and above) were detected and control (n = 40) and experimental (n = 40) groups were created with unbiased assignment method. After the 12-weeks period “games including physical activity” training, the data which was collected from the control and experimental groups by taking post-test data was evaluated with SPSS 20 packaged software. It was found that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test of both sub-dimensions and total addiction scores and post-test scores were lower than pre-test scores. It was shown that post-test addiction scores were significantly higher than pre-test addiction scores in control group. When investigating post-test addiction scores of control and experiment groups, it was shown that addiction level of experimental group significantly decrease comparing control group. It was determined that pre-test/post-test scores of experimental group students did not show significant differences in terms of gender, age, education level of mothers, education level of fathers, number of siblings. It was also found that pre-test/post-test addiction scores of experimental and control groups showed significant differences regarding playing digital game duration. When playing digital game duration decreased in experimental group, playing game duration increased in control group. Therefore, it was concluded that addiction levels of students who are digital game addict decreased because of interesting games including physical activity. As a result; physical moving games and sports can be said to be an important tool in dealing with digital game addiction. It can also be said that an important way to protect children from such addictions is to do sports.

In this 21st–century, students are expected to have current competencies in which one of them is science process skills. The aim of this research was to empower science process skills through the SETS-based guided experiment book. This Posttest Only Control Group Design study involved 50 students of fifth grade which divided into two groups i.e. 25 students as the experimental group and 25 students as the control group. The activities were carried out for three months outside of school. The empowerment of science process skills was measured from the increasing scores before and after the implementation of the SETS Guided Experiment Book. The results showed that there was a significant different between experimental group and control group as the significancy value was 0.01 (sig. < 0.05). This means that the SETS-based guided experiment book can empower Science process skill of elementary school students.

The principal purpose of this investigation is to study the effect of robotic cooperative learning methodologies on middle school students’ critical thinking, and STEM interest. The semi-experimental inquiry consisted of ninety four six-grade students (forty nine students in the experimental group, forty five students in the control group), chosen by their principals. A critical thinking test was administered to evaluate the cognitive skills and STEM interest of the students. Instruction was implemented in two formats: cooperative learning and problem-based learning. The experimental group utilized robotic cooperative learning while the control group utilized problem-based learning.  After four sessions of both instruction types with both groups the findings reveal that critical thinking of students is enhanced significantly by robotic cooperative learning (P<0.01).

This study sought to determine the effect of the problem-solving approach on academic achievement of students in mathematics at the secondary level. The secondary school students studying mathematics constituted the population of this study. The students of 10th class of Government Pakistan Girls High School Rawalpindi were selected as a sample for the study. Sample size consisted of 48 students who were equally divided into an experimental group and a control group on the basis of pre-test. Treatment of the planned problem-solving approach is the guideline of Sherreen (2006) and Polya’s (1945) heuristic steps of the problem-solving approach. After the treatment, post-test was used to see the effects of the treatment. A two-tailed t-test was used to analyze the data, which revealed that both the experimental and control groups were almost equal in mathematics base at the beginning of the experiment. The experimental group outscored the control group significantly on the post-test.

Abstract. This study aimed to test the effect of training module “Kepedulian terhadap sahabat” in improving prosocial behavior of peer bystanders in middle school. This research used quasi experiment method with the untreated control group design with dependent pretest and posttest samples which separated subjects into two groups, experimental group and control group (N: 48). The subjects were bullying bystanders grade 7-8 middle school students. Instrument used in this research were knowledge test as manipulation check, prosocial scale, and a module of “Kepedulian terhadap Sahabat”. T-test was used to analyze the difference between experimental group and control group. The result shows of that “Kepedulian terhadap Sahabat” has an effect bystanders’s prosocial behavior (z=-3.799, p=0.01) on middle schoolstudents. Keywords: bullying bystanders; prosocial behavior; social-emotional learning

The study aimed to recognize the required listening skills in the English course for middle school students in Riyadh city and the impact of using interactive E- book in their development. To achieve the objectives of the study, the analytical descriptive approach, and the semi- empirical experimental approach were used. The two study tools used are; the checklist of essential listening skills required to be improved among the students of first middle grade, pre and post application of listening skills test applied to the study sample. The two tools were applied to a simple random sample through a draw. The experimental group consisted of (23) female students and the control group consisted of (22) female students in the first middle grade. The study findings revealed the following: The experimental group acquired a total mean of (22.52) against the control group (19.71) in the post- test application. Despite the obvious difference in favor of the experimental group, the value is not statistically significant in the development of listening skills in the English language curriculum at the level of significance (α ≤0.05). In light of the study finding, a number of recommendations and suggestions were presented to activate the use of interactive e- book in the development of listening skills in the English language curriculum.    - - - -

Although the pedagogical value of portfolio assessment is widely investigated, its impact on students’ engagement is still under-explored. Accordingly, this study intended to examine the impact of portfolio assessment on the Moroccan EFL students’ writing engagement. To this end, two groups of high school students were involved in the study. The two groups were randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received the treatment; portfolio assessment accompanied with various reflection and assessment techniques (i.e. self-and peer-assessment and teacher-student conferences) whereas the control group followed the regular summative writing achievement tests. To enrich the data, the experimental group students’ views about portfolio assessment were elicited via students’ written reflections. The analysis of the quantitative data showed that the experimental group students achieved a higher and more significant level of writing engagement than the control group students. Furthermore, the analysis of the qualitative data revealed that the students positively perceived portfolio assessment to impact their writing engagement at various levels.
