Herein, a green process for preparing nano-HMX, mechanical demulsification shearing (MDS) technology, was developed. Nano-HMX was successfully fabricated via MDS technology without using any chemical reagents, and the fabrication mechanism was proposed. Based on the “fractal theory,” the optimal shearing time for mechanical emulsification was deduced by calculating the fractal dimension of the particle size distribution. The as-prepared nano-HMX was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). And the impact sensitivities of HMX particles were contrastively investigated. The raw HMX had a lower fractal dimension of 1.9273. The ideal shearing time was 7 h. The resultant nano-HMX possessed a particle size distribution ranging from 203.3 nm to 509.1 nm as compared to raw HMX. Nano-HMX particles were dense spherical, maintaining β-HMX crystal form. In addition, they had much lower impact sensitivity. However, the apparent activation energy as well as thermal decomposition temperature of nano-HMX particles was decreased, attributing to the reduced probability for hotspot generation. Especially when the shearing time was 7 h, the activation energy was markedly decreased.

Cast IN738LC alloy mainly consists of primary gamma matrix, gamma prime precipitates, and carbides. SEM-EDS analysis results suggested that most of the carbides are MC type ones that possess high Ti or Ta contents. MC carbides were partly dissolved into the matrix during the solid solution treatment, and the morphology and size of carbides were influenced by the solid solution treatment temperature. Characteristics of gamma prime precipitates were also significantly affected by the solid solution treatment conditions. Single or duplex size distributions of gamma prime precipitates were obtained depending on the solid solution treatment condition. Higher tensile strength was obtained in the case of finer precipitation size and in the case of single size distribution as compared with that of duplex size distribution.

Cobalt oxide silica membranes were prepared and tested to separate small molecular gases, such as He (dk = 2.6 Å) and H2 (dk = 2.89 Å), from other gases with larger kinetic diameters, such as CO2 (dk = 3.47 Å) and Ar (dk = 3.41 Å). In view of the amorphous nature of silica membranes, pore sizes are generally distributed in the ultra-microporous range. However, it is difficult to determine the pore size of silica derived membranes by conventional characterization methods, such as N2 physisorption-desorption or high-resolution electron microscopy. Therefore, this work endeavors to determine the pore size of the membranes based on transport phenomena and computer modelling. This was carried out by using the oscillator model and correlating with experimental results, such as gas permeance (i.e., normalized pressure flux), apparent activation energy for gas permeation. Based on the oscillator model, He and H2 can diffuse through constrictions narrower than their gas kinetic diameters at high temperatures, and this was possibly due to the high kinetic energy promoted by the increase in external temperature. It was interesting to observe changes in transport phenomena for the cobalt oxide doped membranes exposed to H2 at high temperatures up to 500 °C. This was attributed to the reduction of cobalt oxide, and this redox effect gave different apparent activation energy. The reduced membrane showed lower apparent activation energy and higher gas permeance than the oxidized membrane, due to the enlargement of pores. These results together with effective medium theory (EMT) suggest that the pore size distribution is changed and the peak of the distribution is slightly shifted to a larger value. Hence, this work showed for the first time that the oscillator model with EMT is a potential tool to determine the pore size of silica derived membranes from experimental gas permeation data.

It was observed that both primary and secondary gamma prime precipitates were more significantly influenced by the solid solution treatment temperature as compared to the following cooling rate. Single and duplex size precipitate distribution with different average size could be obtained through the appropriate solid solution and aging treatment. Micro-hardness test result indicated that single size distribution of gamma prime precipitates provides higher hardness than duplex size distribution.

ABSTRACTA general method has been developed for determining the effects of particle size distribution (PSD) on the kinetics of hydration. Given the PSD and the kinetic rate for particles having a single size, expressions can be derived for the variation of the total degree of hydration with time. The method was applied to PSD and kinetic functions typical of cement systems that account for reaction, diffusion and expansion of spherical hydrate layers. The PSD was found to critically affect the kinetics. A key feature of the theory follows with time those particles that have become totally hydrated, so-called “dead” particles. This produces a dead-particle hydration curve having approximately the same shape and location as the overall hydration curve. It can be represented analytically in all cases and gives a measure of the disguise provided by the distribution.

Abstract In this work, the grain growth behaviour of ZnO+V2O5(1 mol%)+Cr2O3(0.35 mol%)-based ceramics with 0.25–0.75 mol% additions of PrMnO3 was systematically investigated during sintering from 850°C to 925°C with the aim to control the ZnO grain size for their application as varistors. It was found that with the increased addition of PrMnO3, not only did the average grain size decrease, but the grain size distribution also narrowed and eventually changed from a bimodal to unimodal distribution after a 0.75 mol% PrMnO3 addition. The grain growth control was achieved by a pinning effect of the secondary ZnCr2O4 and PrVO4 phases at the ZnO grain boundaries. The apparent activation energy of the ZnO grain growth in these ceramics was found to increase with increased additions of PrVO4; hence, the observed reduction in the ZnO grain sizes.
