Abstract This in-process project report describes a critical youth-led participatory heritage project that seeks to document, preserve, and make digitally accessible oral histories, archives, and artifacts of an urban, predominantly African American high school with a rich history and legacy. As a long-standing community institution, the narratives emerging from this high school are intricately connected with the larger story of the city of Philadelphia. This article uses an equity-based lens to demonstrate how youth-led participatory heritage can contribute to youth empowerment, critical consciousness development, and critical digital literacies. Implications for schools and communities experiencing gentrification, displacement, and community change are provided, including how participatory heritage with youth can utilize collaborative, asset-based efforts to foster change that allows youth and communities to have agency over their individual and collective stories, community history and legacy, and their futures.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to encourage graduate students to facilitate a participatory mapping activity with high school students, to have their voices heard in the disaster risk reduction (DRR) agenda.Design/methodology/approachA participatory mapping, youth-led session, was conducted with 22 high school students, where they had to identify flood and landslide-prone areas. Then, they were asked to propose and plan DRR measures in collaboration with local partners in São Luiz do Paraitinga, Brazil.FindingsThe participatory method engaged the graduate students and the high school students in the DRR debate, allowing them to map hazards and vulnerabilities, and to discuss five incubation projects for enhancing DRR in the city.Originality/valueThis research highlights the importance of involving young people in DRR formulation and planning to build local capacities in younger generations. The outputs were shared with the local civil defense and a local non-governmental organization (NGO), who suggested recommendations to improve the five incubation projects.

The use of experiments is an important didactic strategy for the chemistry teaching, for motivation and learning of scientific contents, especially when designed in accordance with research teaching, in order to encourage questioning, planning and explanations based on evidence, actions essential for understanding the contents of chemistry. The present work had the objective of evaluating the potential of a continued formation of for chemistry teacher’s workshop, as well as analyzing the impressions of these teachers on experimental work through teaching by investigation. For this, it was conducted the referred workshop focused on the approach of experimentation in a perspective of teaching by investigation with six chemistry teachers of the High School in the city of Serra Talhada, Pernambuco. The application of the workshop occurred in two moments, totaling eight hours. To compose the proposal of continued formation the following activities were used: comics, videos, theoretical classes, presentation of experiments, among other resources. The data were collected from the use of a camera for recording in audio and video, in addition to the material produced by the participating teachers and were analyzed using description/reflection of the actions and discursive textual analysis, respectively. It was possible to perceive the evolution of teachers' conceptions about the use of experimentation in teaching, in a movement of convergence for ideas of work with experimental activities in the perspective of teaching by research

This research is motivated by the low mathematical communication skills of junior high school students in the city of Bandung Regency. This study aims to determine the comparison of the mathematical communication skills of junior high school students in the city of Bandung regency between the learning usingmodels Think Talk Write. The method used in this study is a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design involving two groups and randomly selected classes, at the beginning and end of the study the two classes were given a test. The population in this study were junior high school students in the city of Bandung Regency, while the sample consisted of two randomly selected classes. Obtained class VII A (experimental class) given themodel Think Talk Write and class VII B (control class) is given a scientific approach. The instrument used was a 5-item mathematical communication ability description test, then theability scores mathematical communication students'were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics using the help of SPSS 21 software. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that there were differences in the achievement of students' mathematical communication skills using models Think Talk Write with students who used a scientific approach.

The city of Quito lies on geological faults that have no surface outcrop but are moving with a speed of 2-4 mm per year. The last strong earthquake associated with these thrust faults, was rec-orded in 1587 and had a magnitude of 6.4; so it has been more than 400 years, there is a large amount of stored energy, and the probability of an earthquake occurring is very high. Therefore, this article presents, firstly, the periods of recurrence of these faults; then a microzoning of the north central part of the city and the elastic response spectra for 5% damped associated to the Llumbisi- La Bota segment fault, ILB. And subsequently, an analysis of nine steel structures from one to nine storeys assuming that they are situated in the following three areas of north central Quito: the old Quito Tenis; La Gasca and Benalcazar High School. Using the Capacity Spectrum Method MEC, the seismic response is found with the presence of three spectrums as prescribed in the Ecuadorian Construction Regula-tions NEC-11; the recommendation in the study of the seismic microzoning of Quito ERN-12 and those found in the seismic microzoning associated with the fault ILB. Three types of responses are indicated for each location, the structures situated in the old Quito Tenis present a performance point found using the Capacity Spectrum Method MEC; for those in La Gasca, a maximum lateral displacement is indicated in each storey; and the structures situated in the Benalcazar High School present maximum interstorey drifts. It should be highlighted that the lateral displacements and interstorey drifts are reaching the end of their performance, thus the conclusions to be found in this study about which spectrum the maximum response has could be inferred from any of the three structural parameters.
