Sleep quality and Dietary Inflammatory Index among university students: a cross-sectional study

Background: Overweight, obesity and lack of sleep quality as inflammatory states are the common problems among college students and the Association of Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) with these problems among this population is unknown. We aimed to evaluate the relationship of the DII with obesity and sleep quality among Iranian female students. Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted in 249 female college students. The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) was calculated using a valid and reliable 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). To assess sleep quality, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used. Odds Ratio (OR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CIs) were estimated for anthropometric indices and sleep quality according to DII score. Linear regression was used to estimate the relationship between DII score with sleep and anthropometric indices. Results: There was a significant association evident between DII and sleep quality(> 5 is considered as poor quality of sleep); i.e., the odds ratios between DII quartile 2 vs 1 (unadjusted model: OR= 0.33 (CI: 0.14-0.74), P for trend =0.002; model 1: the fully adjusted OR= 0.31(CI: 0.12-0.78), P for trend = 0.005; model 2:OR=0.30 (CI:0.12-0.78), P for trend = 0.005) to quartile 4(unadjusted model: OR= 1.13(CI: 0.45-2.80); model 1: OR= 1.11(CI: 0.44-2.79); model 2:OR=1.13(CI:0.44-2.87), P for trend = 0.005). Also, odds ratios increased significantly from quartile 2 to quartile 4 in all models for DII and sleep quality. According to the continuous score of DII, there was a significant positive association between DII and sleep quality in all 3 models: unadjusted, model 1, and model 2 (OR= 1.21 (CI: 1.05-1.40), OR= 1.21 (CI: 1.03-1.43), and OR= 1.22 (CI: 1.03-1.44), respectively. Conclusions: In this study, after removing the effect of confounding factors, participants in the highest quartile of DII score had significantly higher PSQI global score.

Abstract Aims: Recent studies have shown that increased dietary inflammatory index (DII) score or consumption of pro-inflammatory foods can lead to increased waist circumference (WC) as well as triglyceride (TG) concentrations in obese people. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between DII and hypertriglyceridemic waist circumference phenotype (HTGWCP) in overweight and obese women. Methods: This study was performed on 226 obese women aged from 18 to 48 years. We evaluated DII score by semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) of 147 items. Biochemical parameters were measured and anthropometric assessments were performed. Results: There was a positive significant correlation between DII and HTGWCPs. In other words, with an increase in DII score, the odds of having abnormal phenotypes including; enlarged waist normal TG (EWNT) (OR=2.85, 95% CI=1.02 to 7.98, P for trend=0.04) , normal waist enlarged TG (NWET) (OR=5.85, 95% CI=1.1 to 31.11, P for trend=0.03), enlarged waist enlarged TG (EWET) (OR=3.13, 95% CI=0.95 to 10.27, P for trend=0.05) increase compared to normal waist normal TG (NWNT) phenotype.Conclusion: Increasing DII scores can increase abnormal phenotypes so may increase WC and TG levels in overweight and obese women.

Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate associations between Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (EDII) with quality of life and serum inflammatory markers.Results: This cross-sectional study was performed on 280 adult healthy overweigh and obese aged between 18 and 50 years old that was selected from 20 various health centers by a multistage cluster random sampling method. The mean age of the study participants was 36.30±8.05 years. Analyses were performed using multivariable linear regression, adjusting for age, weight, physical activity, smoking status, economic status, and employment status. Linear regression analysis demonstrated that E-DII were significantly associated with certain the quality of life criteria, such as physical function, mental health, and vitality (β = 5.58, 95% CI 0.72, 10.43, p = 0.024, β = 16.88, 95% CI 10.75, 23, p < 0.0001 and β = 14.29, 95% CI 9.48, 20.36, p < 0.0001, respectively). No significant associations were observed between EDII and serum level hs-CRP. It was found that dietary inflammatory potential decreased some quality of life measurements and levels in overweight and obese Iranian women.

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between sleep quality and duration, and periodontal disease among a group of young Japanese university students. First-year students (n = 1934) at Okayama University who voluntarily underwent oral health examinations were included in the analysis. Sleep quality and duration were assessed by the Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Dentists examined Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S), probing pocket depth (PPD), and percentage of sites with bleeding on probing (BOP). Periodontal disease was defined as presence of PPD ≥ 4 mm and BOP ≥ 30%. Overall, 283 (14.6%) students had periodontal disease. Poor sleep quality was observed among 372 (19.2%) students. Mean (± standard deviation) sleep duration was 7.1 ± 1.1 (hours/night). In the logistic regression analysis, periodontal disease was significantly associated with OHI-S (odds ratio [OR]: 2.30, 95% confident interval [CI]: 1.83–2.90; p < 0.001), but not sleep quality (OR: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.79–1.53; p = 0.577) or sleep duration (OR: 0.98, CI: 0.87–1.10; p = 0.717). In conclusion, sleep quality and duration were not associated with periodontal disease among this group of young Japanese university students.

The aim of this study was to analyze relationship between sociodemographic factors and poor sleep quality in Brazilian university students. Cross-sectional study, surveyed 701 students in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. We applied a questionnairre with sociodemographic questions and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. We did not identify associations and/or statistically significant linear trends between sleep quality and sociodemographic analyzed factors. However, the analysis found that the relative risk in college aged > 31 years, in those who lived alone and with relatives (other than parents) there is greater vulnerability to poor sleep quality.
