Abstract Recently, suicide among Bangladeshi university students has become a serious problem. However, to date, there have been no studies assessing suicidal behaviors among Bangladeshi students. Therefore, the present study investigated suicidal ideation (SI) and its risk factors among this population. A classroom-based convenience sampling method was utilized to survey 665 students of a university in Bangladesh (67.5% males; aged 21.16 years: SD ± 1.6). In addition to socio-demographic questions, the survey also included the Smartphone Application-Based Addiction Scale, Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale, and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale–21. Results showed that the prevalence of suicidal ideation was 2.3% in the past 24 h, 4.8% in the past 15 days, 6.9% in the past month, 14.7% in the past year, and 61.1% in the lifetime. The unadjusted regression model showed that being divorced (or separated) from a partner (OR = 4.486, 95% CI = 1.972–10.207, p < 0.0001), Facebook addiction (OR = 1.550, 95% CI = 1.006–2.388, p = 0.047), depression (OR = 1.657, 95% CI = 1.677–4.211, p < 0.0001), anxiety (OR = 2.649, 95% CI = 1.624–4.320, p < 0.0001), and stress (OR = 2.626, 95% CI = 1.673–4.122, p < 0.0001) were the risk factors of past-year SI. Compared with global prevalence rates, the present study reported higher levels of SI prevalence. Therefore, supportive suicide prevention programs are needed to tackle SI and alongside comorbid psychopathology.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in university students and is often associated with depression. This study examined the associations between depression and suicidal ideation among male and female postgraduate university students. This study utilized a survey using simple random sampling methodology involving 60 respondents (30 male and 30 female) chosen at random from different streams of Sikkim University, India. The participants were assessed by using Beck Suicidal Ideation (BSI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II).The data were analysed by using mean, standard deviation and descriptive statistics –Pearson method of correlation and non-parametric statistics like t-test. The findings indicated that suicidal ideation was negatively associated with depression, and no significant gender difference was found on depression. Reviewed research revealed similar suicidal risk factors for males and females. However, the prevalence and strength of prediction of certain risk factors were found to vary gender-specifically. These findings support the utility of gender-sensitive suicide assessment, prevention and intervention strategies. It was recommended that suicide prevention programs, counselling centers, and psychology clinics on university campus should include suicide attitudes such as depression, anxiety, and stress in their assessment and identification of individuals who may be at risk for engaging in suicide behaviour.

ObjectivesData on the problem of physical activity-related injury (PARI) in university students and the risk factors for PARI among different genders are rare. We conducted a multicentre population-based study to investigate the occurrence of PARI and to explore the gender-specific risk factors for PARI among Chinese university students.DesignCross-sectional study.ParticipantsA total of 5341 students in grades 1–3 at eight universities in four Chinese cities were selected to complete the online questionnaires during March and April 2017. The questionnaires assessed sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity PA) involvement, sleep duration, sedentary behaviour and PARI experiences in the past 12 months.Main outcome measuresPARI during the past 12 months.ResultsAmong the 5341 participants, 1293 suffered from at least one PARI in the past 12 months, with an overall incidence rate of 24.2% (males: 26.2%, females: 23.2%) and an injury risk of 0.38 injuries/student/year (males: 0.48, females: 0.32). Over half of the injured (57.3%) experienced a withdrawal time of PA and nearly two-fifths (39.6%) required medical attention. Irrespective of gender, Shantou and Xi’an students, sports team members and those who engaged in sports and leisure-time vigorous-intensity PA (VPA) at a higher frequency were more likely to suffer from PARI. Male students who participated in sports and leisure-time VPA for long durations had a greater likelihood of sustaining PARI, while having a chronic condition and being involved in sports and leisure-time moderate-intensity PA at a higher frequency and longer duration were potential contributors to PARI among females.ConclusionsThe occurrence of PARI and its risk factors differed by gender, which provides a direction towards developing targeted and effective gender-specific preventative programmes to protect Chinese university students from PARI.

Abstract Background Multiple risk-taking behaviors are associated with increased risk of poor educational attainment, morbidity and premature mortality. This study involved a large representative sample of Iranian university students addressing multiple risk behaviors and associated factors. Methods This cross-sectional study included 4261 participants, involving 13 medical universities throughout the country in 2017. The following six risky behaviors were addressed: (a) smoking cigarettes during the past month, (b) using some kinds of illicit drugs during the past month, (c) drinking alcohol during the past month, (d) engaging unprotected sex during the past year, (e) having suicidal ideation during the past month or attempting suicide in the past year, (f) and Internet addiction. The 20-item internet addiction test and the 28-item general health questionnaire were used. Results Almost 37.3% of the participants engaged in at least one out of six risky behaviors. The prevalence of Internet addiction was 24.5%, cigarette smoking 13.5%, alcohol use 7.8%, illicit drug abuse 4.9%, unprotected sex 7.8%, suicidal ideation 7.4%, attempting suicide 1.7% and general health problems 38.9%. Conclusion A majority of the Iranian university students studied engaged in at least one risky behavior. Engaging in one risky behavior increases the risk of engaging in other risk-taking behaviors.

AIM: This study aimed to verify the association between moment of the undergraduate course and cardiovascular risk factors in a representative sample of university students Methods: A total of 1,599 university students (1,197 freshmen and 402 seniors) were investigated for the following risk factors: insufficient practice of physical activity, tobacco and alcohol consumption, poor eating habits, excess body weight, increased waist circumference and elevated arterial pressure. Information regarding the practice of physical activity were obtained using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) instrument, the behaviors using the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance, and the socio-environmental information using the methodology of the Associação Brasileira de Empresas de Pesquisa (Brazilian Association of Research Companies). RESULTS: A significantly higher probability of presenting the following risk factors was verified among the senior students: insufficient practice of physical activity, smoked, consumed alcohol or drank alcohol in excess within the last thirty days. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that students closer to the end of the undergraduate course show a higher possibility of presenting some cardiovascular risk factors than those just entering the university environment. Therefore, prevention programs and health promotion during the undergraduate course should be investigated.

During the past twenty-five years, the writer has made spasmodic collections of Ichneumonoidea in various parts of Alberta, although, in the earlier years, prospects for getting them authoritatively determined were somewhat remote. In addition, smaller collections, chiefly one made by Dr. G. Salt and determined by Mr. R. A. Cushman in 1927, duplicate specimens taken by Dr. R. Salt in later surveys of insects associated with alfalfa, and specimens taken by a few university students, have been donated to the university collection.

Summary Is often heard in informal meetings about the subject of mathematics and the past student, on some cases it is usually have answers that reflect apathy to the subject, express on unpleasant experiences, until you select careers that do not have to do with numbers or mathematical calculations. This has been reason of study for the authors of the investigation, who inquired about university students to know in detail, if the apathy is related with study careers that they have in the curriculum the least amount of subjects that involve the mathematics. The object of this work is determining the causes of the apathy to the mathematics in the university humanistic careers, for which the survey of university students was used as a research tool: Technical of Manabí and San Gregorio of Portoviejo, in the careers of Social Work and jurisprudence, identifying the main weakness of mathematics teachers to homogenize their work methodology, without considering that the group of studies, and the students are different, also adding that they make inadequate diagnoses, that the texts in spite of bringing motivational readings the attitude of the teachers do not contribute to a true motivation, generating indifference and rejection to the subject, concluding that apathy and little enthusiasm for the subject of mathematics is methodological responsibility of the teachers, which show pedagogical inadequacies to teach the lecture subject of study of this research. This study has investigated the improvement of communication between students, academic and administrative departments at Palestinian universities, Palestine Ahliya University (PAU) in particular, by proposing a smartphone application. In particular, the study aimed to measure the level of administrative and academic communication provided to students and staff by the current e-services (portal and email) and traditional paper method at PAU, and thus identify their most prominent administrative and academic needs. In this paper, the descriptive-analytical method was used and a questionnaire was distributed to academics and head of administrative departments who have direct contact with university students. A random sample of the university students of different levels was selected at PAU as a case study. More precisely, 221 questionnaires were distributed, 169 were retrieved and analyzed using Google Drive. The results showed a real weakness in the communication level between the academic departments, administrative departments, and students, which shows that the current e-services at PAU are not sufficient and need to be enhanced. In particular, 82% of staff reported poor communication through the academic portal, and 70% reported poor communication via email. The rates of communication weakness of the academic gate and email for students were lower than teachers, reaching 72.2% and 67.2%, respectively. The results also showed that there is a lot of time and effort wasted by using the traditional method. All of these currently used methods led to a poor commitment to the university policy and instructions and additional workload for the administrative departments. In addition to that, the results showed the most important academic and administrative needs for students, academic and administrative departments. The most important needs were the administrative ones (83.6% for teachers and 81.4% for students), most notably, the admission and registration services followed by the needs of the Alumni and Training Unit. Ranked second were the academic needs (75.8% for teachers and 72.6% for students) which include the policy of exceptions and absence, and academic advising services. Therefore, developing a smartphone application that meets all of these needs would play an important role in bridging and activating communication between the students as well as academic and administrative departments.
