The menisci of the knee are complex fibro-cartilaginous tissues that play important roles in load bearing, shock absorption, joint lubrication, and stabilization. The objective of this study was to evaluate the interaction between the different meniscal tissue components (i.e., the solid matrix constituents and the fluid phase) and the mechanical response according to the developmental stage of the tissue. Menisci derived from partially and fully developed pigs were analyzed. We carried out biochemical analyses to quantify glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and DNA content according to the developmental stage. These values were related to tissue mechanical properties that were measured in vitro by performing compression and tension tests on meniscal specimens. Both compression and tension protocols consisted of multi-ramp stress–relaxation tests comprised of increasing strains followed by stress–relaxation to equilibrium. To better understand the mechanical response to different directions of mechanical stimulus and to relate it to the tissue structural composition and development, we performed numerical simulations that implemented different constitutive models (poro-elasticity, viscoelasticity, transversal isotropy, or combinations of the above) using the commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics. The numerical models also allowed us to determine several mechanical parameters that cannot be directly measured by experimental tests. The results of our investigation showed that the meniscus is a non-linear, anisotropic, non-homogeneous material: mechanical parameters increase with strain, depend on the direction of load, and vary among regions (anterior, central, and posterior). Preliminary numerical results showed the predominant role of the different tissue components depending on the mechanical stimulus. The outcomes of biochemical analyses related to mechanical properties confirmed the findings of the numerical models, suggesting a specific response of meniscal cells to the regional mechanical stimuli in the knee joint. During maturation, the increase in compressive moduli could be explained by cell differentiation from fibroblasts to metabolically active chondrocytes, as indicated by the found increase in GAG/DNA ratio. The changes of tensile mechanical response during development could be related to collagen II accumulation during growth. This study provides new information on the changes of tissue structural components during maturation and the relationship between tissue composition and mechanical response.

Abstract This paper presents a numerical study on pipes ductile fracture mechanical response using a phenomenological computational damage model. The damage is controlled by an initiation criterion dependent on the stress triaxiality and the Lode angle parameter, and a post-initiation damage law to eliminate each finite element from the mesh. Experimental tests were carried out to calibrate the elastoplastic response, damage parameters and validate the FEM models. The tested geometries were round bars having smooth and notched cross-section, flat notched specimens under axial tensile loads, and fracture toughness tests in deeply cracked bending specimens SE(B) and compact tension samples C(T). The calibrated numerical procedure was applied to execute a parametric study in pipes with circumferential surface cracks subjected to tensile and internal pressure loads simultaneously. The effects of the variation of geometric parameters and the load applications on the pipes strain capacity were investigated. The influence of longitudinal misalignment between adjacent pipes was also investigated.

The investigation of fiber-reinforced composite laminates mechanical response under impact loads can be very difficult due to simultaneous failure phenomena. Indeed, as a consequence of low velocity impacts, intra-laminar damage as fiber and matrix cracking and inter-laminar damage, such as delamination, often take place concurrently, leading to significant reductions in terms of strength and stability for composite structure. In this paper a numerical study is proposed which, by means of non-linear explicit FEM analysis, aims to completely characterize the composite reinforced laminates damage under low velocity impacts. The numerical investigation allowed to obtain an exhaustive insight on the different phases of the impact event considering the damage formation and evolution. Five different impact locations with the same impact energy are taken into account to investigate the influence on the onset and growth of damage.

An efficient numerical ice-sheet model, including time dependence and full thermo-mechanical coupling, has been developed in order to investigate the thermal regime and overall configuration of a polar ice sheet with respect to changing environmental conditions. From basic sensitivity experiments, in which a schematic East Antarctic ice sheet is forced with a typical glacial–interglacial climatic shift, it is found that: (i) the mutual interaction of temperature and deformation has a stabilizing effect on its steady-state configuration; (ii) in the transient mode, this climatic transition initially leads to increased ice thickness due to enhanced accumulation, after which this trend is reversed due to a warmer base. Time-scales for this reversal are of the order of 103 years in marginal zones and of 104 years in interior regions; (iii) horizontal heat advection plays a major role in damping possible runaway behaviour due to the dissipation – strain-rate feed-back, suggesting that creep instability is a rather unlikely candidate to initiate surging of the East Antarctic ice sheet. The model is then applied to four East Antarctic flow lines. Only the flow line passing through Wilkes Land appears to be vulnerable to widespread basal melting, due to enhanced basal warming following climatic warming. Time-dependent modelling of the Vostok flow line indicates that the Vostok Station area has risen about 95 m since the beginning of the present interglacial due to thermo-mechanical effects, which is of particular interest in interpreting the palaeoclimatic signal of the ice core obtained there.

ABSTRACTA finite element numerical model is used to predict the thermal and mechanical response of mineral-bearing ores irradiated by microwave energy. The model considers a small, spherical, pyrite particle surrounded by a matrix of calcite. Power density data are determined from the dielectric properties of the mineral and host rock materials at typical microwave frequencies and power capabilities. The effects of varying power density and mineral particle diameter are studied. Using power densities within the expected achievable range for pyrite, significant temperature differences are predicted between the mineral particle and host rock. These temperature gradients lead to circumferential tensile stresses in the host rock well in excess of the reported uniaxial tensile strength of common rock materials. It is shown that, for a fixed microwave energy source, both the temperature difference between the mineral and host rock, and the peak tensile stress in the host rock are reduced as the mineral particle size is reduced. Recent experimental efforts to corroborate this numerical study are briefly described.

The paper presents a numerical study regarding the mechanical response of the body of a freight wagon to the usual loads encountered during service. The main goal of the present research is to investigate the possibility to replace the steel walls of the wagon with walls made of laminated composites. In this way, the total mass of the wagon can be decreased, leaving room for supplementary load of goods. Finite element analyses of the wagon with steel walls is presented first, in order to show that most of the load is taken by the structure of the wagon, while the stresses in the walls are low. Further, composite plates with different thickness are studied to find the minimum value of thickness for which the displacements have values below a certain range. These thicknesses are further considered in the finite element analyses of the entire wagon with composite walls to investigate if the new walls significantly change the stresses in the vehicle structure. It was concluded that the replacement does not alter the stress state in the structure, and, consequently, it is a good solution for diminution of the total mass of the vehicle.

Rock has the characteristics of natural heterogeneity and discontinuity. Its failure phenomenon induced by external force involves complex processes, including the microcrack initiation, propagation, coalescence, and the macrocrack formation. In this study, the Weibull random distribution based on the rock microstructure characteristics is introduced into the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM) to establish the heterogeneous rock model, and the mechanical response and damage evolution of rock samples in uniaxial compression test are simulated. The results show that FDEM simulation with loaded heterogeneous rock model can reflect the progressive development of rock damage, fracture, and acoustic emission (AE) activity in real rock well. Meanwhile, the statistical analysis indicates that the number and energy evolution of AE events with different fracture modes in the model are consistent with the macroscopic failure mode of rock. The change of b-value also agrees with the increasing trend of high-energy events in the loading process. This method provides a new tool for the analysis of rock damage and fracture evolution.
