A new destructive method for quantitative determination of the damage accumulation in the vicinity of a stress concentrator has been proposed and verified. Increase of damage degree in local area with a high level of the strain gradient was achieved through preliminary low-cycle pull-push loading of plane specimens with central open holes. The above procedure is performed for three programs at the same stress range (333.3 MPa) and different stress ratio values 0.33, – 0.66 and – 1.0, and vice versa for two programs at the same stress ratio – 0.33 and different stress range 333.3 and 233.3 MPa. This process offers a set of the objects to be considered with different degree of accumulated fatigue damages. The key point of the developed approach consists in the fact that plane specimens with open holes are tested under real operation conditions without a preliminary notching of the specimen initiating the fatigue crack growth. The measured parameters necessary for a quantitative description of the damage accumulation process were obtained by removing the local volume of the material in the form of a sequence of narrow notches at a constant level of external tensile stress. External load can be considered an amplifier enhancing a useful signal responsible for revealing the material damage. The notch is intended for assessing the level of fatigue damage, just as probe holes are used to release residual stress energy in the hole drilling method. Measurements of the deformation response caused by local removing of the material are carried out by electronic speckle-pattern interferometry at different stages of low-cycle fatigue. The transition from measured in-plane displacements to the values of the stress intensity factor (SIF) and the T-stress was carried out on the basis of the relations of linear fracture mechanics. It was shown that the normalized dependences of the stress intensity factor on the durability percentage for the first notch (constructed for four programs of cyclic loading with different parameters), reflect the effect of the stress ratio and stress range of the loading cycle on the rate of damage accumulation. The data were used to obtain the explicit form of the damage accumulation function that quantitatively describes damage accumulation process. The functions were constructed for different stress ratios and stress ranges.

Experiments on U75V rail steel were carried out to investigate the cyclic feature, ratcheting behavior and low-cycle fatigue under both strain- and stress-controlled loadings at room temperature. It was found that U75V rail steel shows strain amplitude dependent cyclic softening feature, i.e., the responded stress amplitude under strain-controlled decreases with the increasing number of cycles and reaches a stable value after about 20th cycle. Ratcheting strain increases with an increasing stress amplitude and mean stress, except for stress ratio, and the ratcheting strain in failure also increases with an increasing stress amplitude, mean stress and stress ratio. The low-cycle fatigue lives under cyclic straining decrease linearly with an increasing strain amplitude, the fatigue lives under cyclic stressing decrease with an increasing mean stress except for zero mean stress, and decrease with an increasing stress amplitude. Ratcheting behavior with a high mean stress reduces fatigue life of rail steel by comparing fatigue lives under stress cycling with those under strain cycling. Research findings are helpful to evaluate fatigue life of U75V rail steel in the railways with passenger and freight traffic.

The effect of the width to thickness ratio on the bendability of sheet metal is investigated using the finite element method (FEM) employing the Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman (GTN) model. Strain path changes in the sheet with change in the width/thickness ratio. It is shown that bendability and fracture strain increase significantly by decrease in the width/thickness ratio. The stress state is almost uniaxial when the stress ratio (α) is close to zero for narrow sheets. Stress ratio is nothing but the major stress to minor stress ratio. This delays the growth and coalescence of micro-voids as the volumetric strain and stress triaxiality (pressure/effective stress) decrease. On the other hand, ductility decreases with increase in α for wider sheets. Fracture bending strain is calculated and, as expected, it increases with decrease in the width/thickness ratio. Furthermore, a brief study is performed to understand the effect of superimposed hydrostatic pressure on fracture strain for various sheet metals with different width/thickness ratios. It is found that the superimposed hydrostatic pressure increases the ductility, and that the effect of the width/thickness ratio in metals on ductility is as significant as the effect of superimposed hydrostatic pressure. Numerical results are found to be in good agreement with experimental observations.

The effect of micro-notches on the fatigue strength of nickel thin films was studied. Two types of thin films with 10 μm thickness were produced by electrodeposition using sulfamate solution without and with brightener: ultra-fine grained film (UFG) with the grain size of 384 nm and nano-crystalline grained film (NCG) with that of 17 nm. Micro-sized notches introduced by FIB had the width of 2 μm and various depths from 8 to 150μm. Fatigue tests were conducted under the stress ratio of 0.1. The fatigue strength decreased with increasing depth of notches. NCG had much higher strength than UFG compared at the same notch depth. Notches as small as 8μm did reduce the fatigue strength of both UFG and NCG. The fatigue limit was controlled by the initiation of cracks and no non-propagating crack was observed in specimens fatigued below the fatigue limit. A model of fictitious crack successfully predicted the reduction of the fatigue limit due to micro-notches. The characteristic crack length of NCG was much smaller than the UFG, while the fatigue strength of defect-free NCG was larger than that of UFG. SEM observation of fracture surfaces was conducted to reveal micromechanisms of fatigue crack initiation.

During horizontal well staged fracturing, there is stress interference between multiple transverse fractures in the same perforation cluster. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculation methods are applied in this study. We analysed the mechanism of induced stress interference in a single fracture under different fracture spacings and principal stress ratios. We also investigated the hydraulic fracture morphology and synchronous expansion process under different fracture spacings and principal stress ratios. The results show that the essence of induced stress is the stress increment in the area around the hydraulic fracture. Induced stress had a dual role in the fracturing process. It created favourable ground stress conditions for the diversion of hydraulic fractures and the formation of complex fracture network systems, inhibited fracture expansion in local areas, stopped hydraulic fractures, and prevented the formation of effective fractures. The curves of the maximum principal stress, minimum principal stress, and induced principal stress difference with distance under different fracture lengths, different fracture spacings, and different principal stress ratios were consistent overall. With a small fracture spacing and a small principal stress ratio, intermediate hydraulic fractures were difficult to initiate or arrest soon after initiation, fractures did not expand easily, and the expansion speed of lateral hydraulic fractures was fast. Moreover, with a smaller fracture spacing and a smaller principal stress ratio, hydraulic fractures were more prone to steering, and even new fractures were produced in the minimum principal stress direction, which was beneficial to the fracture network communication in the reservoir. When the local stress and fracture spacing were appropriate, the intermediate fracture could expand normally, which could effectively increase the reservoir permeability.

Crack growth resistance for both static (rising load) and for cyclic fatigue crack growth has been shown to be a continuous function over a range of 0.1 μm to 10 cm in crack extension for 2024-T3 aluminum. Crack growth resistance to each fatigue cycle of crack extension is shown to approach the materials ordinary undirectional static crack resistance value when the cyclic stress ratio is zero. The fatigue crack extension is averaged over many cycles and is correlated with the maximum value of the crack tip stress intensity, Kmax. A linear plot of crack growth resistance for fatigue and static loading data shows similar effects of thickness, stress ratio, and other parameters. The effect of cyclic stress ratio on crack growth resistance for 2219 aluminum indicates the magnitude of differences in resistance when plotted to a linear scale. Prediction of many of these trends is possible using one of several available crack growth data correlating techniques. It appears that a unique resistance curve, dependent on material, crack orientation, thickness, and stress/physical environment, can be developed for crack extensions as small as 0.076 μm (3 μ inches). This wide range, crack growth resistance curve is seen of immense potential for use in both fatigue and fracture studies.

The fatigue crack growth rate behavior of a SAE1045 steel in the as received condition and four different quenched and tempered conditions was studied as a function of stress ratio and peak compressive overload. The threshold stress intensity behavior of the quenched and tempered conditions was not sensitive to changes of monotonic mechanical properties. The threshold decreased linearly with increasing positive stress ratio and compressive peak load level. As received ferritic-pearlitic SAE1045 steel was much more sensitive to stress ratio and compressive peak load than any of the quenched and tempered conditions studied.
