AbstractThe goals of this paper are: (a) to investigate adaptive and fractional-order adaptive control algorithms for an automatic anesthesia process, using a closed-loop system, and (b) to develop an easy-to-use tool for MATLAB/Simulink to facilitate simulations for users with less knowledge about anesthesia and adaptive control. A model reference adaptive control structure was chosen for the entire system. First of all, to control the patient’s state during the surgery process, the patient mathematical model is useful, or even required for simulation studies. The pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) model was determined using MATLAB’s SimBiology tool, starting from a previously available block diagram, and validated through simulation. Then, to achieve the desired control performances, two controllers are designed: a PI adaptive controller and a PIλ (PI-fractional) adaptive controller, using the MIT algorithm. The time response during anesthetic drug infusion for each patient can be plotted with the AnesthesiaGUIDE tool, which is also designed in MATLAB/Simulink. The tool was tested on data from 12 patients, subjected to general anesthesia, with successful results. Through this tool, the article provides a good opportunity for any user to experience with adaptive control for the anesthesia process.

The evolution of the adaptive control algorithms driven by the results obtained in the application of the 1st generation of adaptive controllers (model reference adaptive control, self-tuning minimum variance) is examined. Research in the field of adaptive control has been directed, on the one hand, toward the development of a robust general purpose adaptive controller and, on the other, towards the extension of the model reference adaptive control approach to nonlinear systems. Research has also investigated the stability/passivity approach for developing dedicated adaptive control algorithms for particular classes of nonlinear plants (e.g., rigid robots). The paper will review the results obtained in these directions both from the theoretical and the practical points of view. In the final part, current research directions will be included.

The objective of this paper is to develop a Direct Model Reference Adaptive Control (DMRAC) algorithm for a MIMO process by extending the MIT rule adopted for a SISO system. The controller thus developed is implemented on Laboratory interacting coupled tank process through simulation. This can be regarded as the relevant process control in petrol and chemical industries. These industries involve controlling the liquid level and the flow rate in the presence of nonlinearity and disturbance which justifies the use of adaptive techniques such as DMRAC control scheme. For this purpose, mathematical models are obtained for each of the input-output combinations using white box approach and the respective controllers are developed. A detailed analysis on the performance of the chosen process with these controllers is carried out. Simulation studies reveal the effectiveness of proposed controller for multivariable process that exhibits nonlinear behaviour.

Permanent magnet synchronous motor systems are usually used in industry. This kind of systems is nonlinear in nature and generally difficult to control. The ordinary linear constant gain controller will cause overshoot or even loss of system stability. Application of adaptive controller to a permanent magnet synchronous motor system is investigated in this paper. The dynamic model of the system is given and the stability is also analyzed using Popov's criterion. The steady state error can be eliminated using adaptive controller combined with an integration term. Simulation results show the performance of adaptive controller with fast response and less overshoot.

This paper describes the experimental application of adaptive control to Hybrid Squeeze Film Damper (HSFD) supported rotors. The HSFD has been shown to be an adaptive damper capable of providing infinite damper configurations between short and long damper configurations. Previously, theoretical investigations of the adaptive control of HSFD concentrated on the development of the model reference adaptive control (MRAC) method, as well as development of a nonlinear reference model. Simulations of the performance of the adaptive controller during run-up and coast-down indicated the superior performance of the adaptive controller. In this paper, the adaptive controller is tested on a multi-mode rotor. A test rig is designed and developed using computer control. A simple reference model is investigated consisting of a second order system. Three forms for adaptation gain are studied. The results of the experimental investigation illustrated the performance capabilities of the adaptive controller applied to the HSFD, and moreover indicated the possibility of simple design for the adaptive controller.

In this article, the design problem of an adaptive controller for a robotic micromanipulator, including the effects of the applied Van der Waals (VdW) forces is considered. The micro-manipulator’s dynamic model is appropriately modified in order to include the interaction of the attractive VdW-forces. Inhere, every link is decomposed into a series of elementary particles (e.g. spheres), each one interacting with the robot’s neighboring objects during its motion. This interaction induces nonlinear additive terms in the model, attributed to the overall effect of the VdW-forces. The actuation is achieved by a tendon-driven system. At each joint, a pair of tendons is attached and act in an almost passive antagonistic manner. The kinematic and dynamic analysis of the tendon-driven actuation mechanism is offered. Consequently, the microrobot’s model is shown to be linearly parameterizable. Subject to this observation, a globally stabilizable adaptive control scheme is derived, estimating the unknown parameters (masses, generalized VdW-forces) and compensating any variations of those. Simulation studies on a 2-DOF micro-manipulator are offered to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

A systematic model reference adaptive control design scheme is presented. The control scheme is developed and analysed within the framework of a sampled data system with a parameter adaptive algorithm designed on the basis of hyper stability theory. A number of supervisory functions are used to supplement the basic adaptive control system in order to enhance robust controller action.

The validity of the claim by many studies that the damping and stiffness forces can be ignored when designing a model reference adaptive controller, is examined. For a simple plant, the sensitivity of the closed loop system to the inertial, damping, and stiffness nonlinearities are investigated, through a simulation analysis. It is shown that the closed loop system is sensitive to the changes in the inertial nonlinearities, and relatively insensitive to variations in the damping and stiffness forces. This supports the assumption made in many previous studies.

The main control object of Quay crane, which is operating in seaport intermodal terminal cargo loading and unloading process, is the crane trolley. One of the main frequent problem, which occurs, is the swinging of the container. This swinging is caused not only by external forces but also by the movement of the trolley. The research results of recent years produced various types of control algorithms by the other researchers. The control algorithms are solving separate control problems of Quay crane in laboratory environment. However, there is still complex control algorithm design and the controller’s parameter estimation problems to be solved. This paper presents mathematical model of the Quay crane trolley mechanism with the suspended cargo. The mathematical model is implemented in Matlab Simulink environment and using Dormand-Prince solving method. The presented model of laboratory quay crane mathematical model is dedicated to parameter estimation of PID controller of closed loop system with the usage of S –form speed input profile. The article includes the dynamic model of the presented system, the description of closed loop system and modeling results. These results will be used as an initial information for the PID parameters estimation in real quay crane control system. The simu-lation of the model was performed using estimated values of controller. The sway influence of the cargo, the usage of the trolley speed input S-shaper and the PID controller was used to control the trolley speed.
