Abstract Background From the last few years, the development and discovery of bioactive compounds and their potential properties from marine algae have been enhanced significantly. The coastal area is a huge storehouse for propitious algae. It has been the genuine reality that the consequence of marine algae as a source of different compounds is increasing. Main body Numerous advanced research devices are available for the discovery of synthetic compounds but still many researchers are working on natural bioactive compounds to discover their biological properties, which are useful to society. Marine algae are taking the preponderance of consideration from investigators owing to its phenomenon of biological activity like anti-cancer, anti-viral, cholesterol-reducing, and many more. A variety of compounds are collected from algae with specific purposes as they remain in an extremely ambitious and hard state; this condition is responsible for the synthesis of very particularly effective bioactive compounds. The present article is concentrating on the brown algae of the Gujarat coast, phlorotannins, polyphenol, phytosterol from brown algae, and their various applications. The main importance has been given to the secondary metabolites and various applications of marine brown algae. Conclusion From this review, it can be concluded that the prominent bioactive compounds from brown algae can cure many serious diseases. Besides, the potential biological activities of a special bioactive compound may represent the interest in the industry of pharmaceuticals, cosmeceutical, and functional foods.

In recent times, medicinal plants have received great attention worldwide due to their effective pharmacological properties and therapeutic benefits. Numerous chemical compounds extracted from various medicinal plants have manifold biological activities. Thymus vulgaris (TV) is a flowering plant with an aromatic odor that has been broadly applied in conventional medicine, food additives, and phyto-pharmaceutical preparations. It is recognized to have promising therapeutic potential for curing various types of diseases. The essential oil extracted from TV, which contains a high quantity of flavonoids, possess antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Consequently, it could be utilized as a good source in developing novel natural antioxidants and antibiotics. This review explores some of the potential health benefits of TV essential oil (TVEO) on the gastrointestinal tract.

Brown algae (Phaeophyceae) have been consumed by humans for hundreds of years. Current studies have shown that brown algae are rich sources of bioactive compounds with excellent nutritional value, and are considered functional foods with health benefits. Polysaccharides are the main constituents of brown algae; their diverse structures allow many unique physical and chemical properties that help to moderate a wide range of biological activities, including immunomodulation, antibacterial, antioxidant, prebiotic, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, antitumor, and anticoagulant activities. In this review, we focus on the major polysaccharide components in brown algae: the alginate, laminarin, and fucoidan. We explore how their structure leads to their health benefits, and their application prospects in functional foods and pharmaceuticals. Finally, we summarize the latest developments in applied research on brown algae polysaccharides.

: Soybean has become an important world commodity because of its low price, good nutritional value and recognized functional health benefits in recent years. β-conglycinin is one of the major storage proteins in soybean. It has captured a growing interest recently because of its allergenicity and potential health benefits, which continues to drive the research and commercial development of β-conglycinin-based food products and ingredients. In this review, the structure, the amino acid composition, extraction methods and electrophoretic pattern of β-conglycinin are briefly summarized. Studies on β-conglycinin by allergenicity, plasma lipid-controlling, obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are highlighted, critically discussing their main shortcomings and challenges and identifying the research gaps. Studies to date have demonstrated the cultivation of β-conglycinin with health benefits as functional ingredients and foodstuffs. The current research focuses on proteins, mainly challenging the mechanisms of subunit/peptide effects interaction and identifying and characterizing the hidden biological activities in the polypeptide chains. There is much scope for further exploration into various aspects of β-conglycinin, such as the selection of mutant strains and genetic engineering and prospects on targeted β-conglycinin exploitation in the nutraceutical area. In addition, the safety evaluation of β-conglycinin and its stabilized emulsions deserve more attention to food-related applications.

Brown algae of the genus Dilophus contain plenty of biologically active secondary metabolites with diverse structures. Excellent progress has been made in the discovery of diterpenes with extensive chemical defense activity from this genus. Most of these diterpenes exhibit significant biological activities, such as antifungal, cytotoxic, and feeding-deterrent activities. In the present review, we summarized diterpenes isolated from the brown algae of the genus Dilophus.

Isoflavonoids — an overview of their biological activities and potential health benefitsThere are many biological activities attributed to isoflavonoids. The majority of them could be beneficial and some of them may be detrimental, depending on specific circumstances. Isoflavonoids play an important role in human nutrition as health promoting natural chemicals. They belong to plant secondary metabolites that mediate diverse biological functions through numerous pathways. They are structurally similar to estrogens, exerting both estrogenic and antiestrogenic properties in various tissues. The results of epidemiologic studies exploring the role of isoflavonoids in human health have been inconclusive. Some studies support the notion of a protective effect of their consumption in immunomodulation, cognition, risk reduction of certain cancers, cardiovascular and skin diseases, osteoporosis and obesity, as well as relief of menopausal symptoms. Other studies failed to demonstrate any effects.
