Hexagonal ZnO nanoplates were synthesizedviasimple one-pot hydrothermal reaction of Zn(CH3COO)2and CO(NH2)2. XRD, SEM, and HRTEM were used to investigate the composition and microstructure of the material. Together with the facile strain relaxation during structure and volume change upon cycling, this plate-like structure of ZnO is favorable for physical and chemical interactions with lithium ions because of its large contact area with the electrolyte, providing more active sites and short diffusion distances. The resulting hexagonal ZnO nanoplates electrode exhibited good cyclability and delivered a reversible discharge capacity of 368 mAh g−1after 100 cycles at 0.1 C.

Manipulation of adding sequences have been found to influence the reaction rate, thus made it easier to produced controllable Ni nanoparticles. Hot-injection approach shown capability to significantly reduce the production time of Ni nanoparticles compared to the conventional one-pot synthesis. With minor modification on conventional polyol method, narrow, monodispersed and highly yield spherical nickel (Ni) nanoparticles were successfully produced at synthesis temperature of 60°C. Three mixing methods were investigated to study its efficiency towards producing rapid and narrower size distribution of Ni nanoparticles. Reduction processes were proposed each of the method. As-synthesized Ni nanoparticles were characterized with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to analyze the size, morphology and interaction of reactants. Fine particles size distribution revealed that when hydrazine was first heated, reaction rate improved tremendously.

Two different Bi-based semiconductor photocatalysts Bi2MoO6 and Bi2WO6 were synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal reaction at 453 K for 10 h. The properties of the photocatalysts, including structures, morphology, light-absorption band and photoluminescence, etc were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum and fluorescence spectrum. Further, their photocatalytic properties were compared by the degradation of two different organic dyes: Rhodamine B and methylene blue. It is important to note that the Bi2WO6 nanoplate structure exhibited better photocatalytic activity than the Bi2MoO6 nanowires aggregates due to its high surface area, higher light absorption and lower recombination of electron-hole pairs.
