In order to study whether lipid metabolism may be affected by maximum replacement of dietary fish oil and fish meal with vegetable oils (VO) and plant proteins (PP), Atlantic salmon (Salmo salarL.) smolts were fed a control diet containing fish oil and fish meal or one of three plant-based diets through the seawater production phase for 12 months. Diets were formulated to meet all known nutrient requirements. The whole-body lipid storage pattern was measured after 12 months, as well as post-absorptive plasma, VLDL and liver TAG. To further understand the effects on lipid metabolism, expression of genes encoding for proteins involved in VLDL assembly (apoB100), fatty acid uptake (FATP1, cd36, LPL and FABP3, FABP10 and FABP11) were measured in liver and visceral adipose tissue. Maximum dietary VO and PP increased visceral lipid stores, liver TAG, and plasma VLDL and TAG concentrations. Increased plasma TAG correlated with an increased expression of apoB100, indicating increased VLDL assembly in the liver of fish fed the high-plant protein- and VO-based diet. Atlantic salmon fed intermediate replacement levels of VO or PP did not have increased body fat or visceral mass. Overall, the present results demonstrate an interaction between dietary lipids and protein on lipid metabolism, increasing overall adiposity and TAG in the body when fish meal and fish oil are replaced concomitantly at maximised levels of VO and PP.

Abstract. Zinc deficiency and altered myocardial adenylate cyclase activity commonly occur in diabetes. To determine whether the zinc intake of the animal can account for the altered β-adrenergic receptor activity in the diabetic heart, we determined the β-adrenergic receptor number and isoproterenol-, NaF- and forskolin-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity in diabetic and control rats maintained on low, normal and high zinc diets for 3 weeks. Scatchard analysis of [125I]iodocyanopindolol binding to control heart membrane preparations revealed a binding capacity of 17.3 ± 1.3 fmol/mg protein with a Kd of 35 ± 1.0 pmol/l. Neither the diabetic state nor the zinc status altered these binding parameters. The isoproterenol-stimulated adenylate cyclase acticity was significantly lower in diabetic rats on low zinc diets compared with controls. The NaF- (65.1 ± 5.4 vs 60.8 ± 6.4 pmol cAMP·mg protein−1·min−1) and forskolin-stimulated adenylate cyclase activities (161 ± 9.3 vs 154 ± 21.2 pmol cAMP·mg protein−1· min−1) were not significantly altered in diabetic rats. Low dietary zinc intake compared with high zinc diet significantly increased NaF- and forskolin-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity both in diabetic rats and controls. The effect of dietary zinc content on isoproterenol-stimulated adenylate cyclase was significant in control rats only. Thus zinc intake appears to be an important determinant of cardiac adenylate cyclase activity level. Additional factors peculiar to the diabetic state are involved in the modulation of β-adrenergic responsiveness of the diabetic heart.

Annual run size and timing of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolt migration was estimated using Bayesian model framework and data from 6 years of a video monitoring survey. The model has a modular structure. It separates subprocesses of departing, traveling, and observing, of which the first two together define the arrival distribution. The subprocesses utilize biological background and expert knowledge about the migratory behavior of smolts and about the probability to observe them from the video footage under varying environmental conditions. Daily mean temperature and discharge were used as environmental covariates. The model framework does not require assuming a simple distributional shape for the arrival dynamics and thus also allows for multimodal arrival distributions. Results indicate that 20%–43% of smolts passed the Utsjoki monitoring site unobserved during the years of study. Predictive studies were made to estimate daily run size in cases with missing counts either at the beginning or in the middle of the run, indicating good predictive performance.

The native striped bass (Morone saxatilis) population of the Miramichi River, New Brunswick is undergoing an unprecedented recovery while Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) numbers within that system continue to decline. Atlantic salmon smolt depart from the Miramichi system during the striped bass spawning period and it is hypothesized that elevated striped bass abundances will increase encounter rates and predation on smolts. We summarize all available striped bass diet studies occurring within the native range of Atlantic salmon and present a review of the feeding behavior and diet preferences of striped bass before, during, and after their spawning period. The key studies vary in methodologies and interpretability. We present a standardized approach for assessing striped bass predation threats and smolt vulnerability and thus an improved understanding of the species interactions to guide future management in the Miramichi River.
