Daily consumption effects of probiotic yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus La5 and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 on oxidative stress in metabolic syndrome patients

Previous studies using probiotics have shown strain-dependent effects on body mass index (BMI), body mass, or fat mass (FM). The aim of this study was to evaluate how the addition of yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 strains to a diet plan affects selected anthropometric parameters in obese people on an energy-restricted diet. Fifty-four subjects aged 20–49 (34.52 ± 9.58) years were included in this study. The recruited subjects were assigned to two subgroups: consuming probiotic yogurt along with a hypocaloric diet (GP) (n–27) or the same diet but without an intentional introduction of yogurt (GRD) (n–27) for 12 weeks. Both GP and GRD decreased body weight, BMI, fat mass and visceral fat by 5.59 kg and 4.71 kg, 1.89 and 1.61 kg/m2, 4.80 kg and 4.07 kg, and 0.68 and 0.65 L, respectively, although the obtained differences were not significant. Analysis of GP and GRD results separately at the beginning and end of the intervention showed that fat loss was substantial in both groups (p < 0.05). Consumption of yogurt containing LA-5 and BB-12 does not significantly improve anthropometric parameters in obese patients.

This article reviewed the mechanisms of action of probiotics and the possible effects of individual strains on the general wellbeing if they are taken daily.The content and activity of bacteria in food products should be regulated by special guidelines. The balanced nutrition allows us to get healthy strains in a natural way. Daily consumption of certain strains as part of functional food products is promising for the prevention of obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, functional intestinal disorders, colon cancer, cardiovascular diseases and depression. The issues of safety of novel probiotic strains newly introduced in clinical practice require careful consideration. Synbiotics can comprise probiotic strains of bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lr-32, Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04) with tolerance to acid, pepsin and bile salts, as well as the prebiotic inulin and vitamins B1, B2, B6 and B12 contributing to survival of beneficial bacteria. L. acidophilus is a common probiotic that occurs in the natural environment and food products, no cases of antibiotic resistance of this species have been established. Strains Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lr-32, Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04 have a high adhesion capacity, strong inhibitory effects on intestinal pathogens, including fungi, anti-inflammatory effects, help to eliminate oxalates. As can be seen from the above, the use of probiotics and synbiotics is one of the most promising preventive fields of medicine.

Several studies found that the probiotic bacterias such as Lactobacillus acidophilus La5 and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 could prevent glycemia and control the blood lipid profiles. Currently, a probiotic product such as yogurt is not preferable by some consumers since the taste is sour. Therefore, this study was conducted to develop milkshakes supplemented by probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus La5 and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 which are expected to be more acceptable and have a beneficial effect with the addition of prebiotics and soluble fiber glucomannan. This study aims to determine the effect of synbiotic shakes on fasting blood glucose levels and lipid profiles in hyperglycemia Wistar rat models. The study design was a pre-posttest controlled group with 48 male Wistar rats divided into 8 groups, namely the healthy control group (I); hyperglycemia control group (II); group III that received metformin; group IV that received synbiotic shake with La5 + FOS; group V that received synbiotic shake La5 + inulin; group VI that received synbiotic shake Bb12 + FOS; group VII that received synbiotic shake Bb12 + inulin; and group VIII that received synbiotic shake La5 + Bb12 + FOS. The dose of the intervention was 3.6 ml/day with an intervention duration of 28 days. The results showed that the differences in blood glucose levels were not significant (p> 0.05) except for groups IV and VI that experienced a significant increase (p <0.05). The differences in lipid profiles showed insignificant changes in LDL levels except in groups IV and V, a significant increase in HDL levels (p <0.05) in group V and VI, and insignificant change in triglycerides except in group VI. It can be concluded that the administration of synbiotic shakes with a variety of prebiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus La5 and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 for 4 weeks were able to maintain fasting blood glucose levels and lipid profiles in hyperglycemic rats.
