  ABSTRACT Anemia in pregnancy is a condition in pregnant women with hemoglobin levels less than 11gr% during pregnancy. An increased of anemia often occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. Pregnant women needs to be supported with nutritional patterns which contain some necessary intermediate in the synthesis of hemoglobin, which  is seaweed. Seaweed type Euchoma sp contains iron, a mixture of which is needed in the synthesis of hemoglobin, has a high bioavailability of substances and is able to stabilize the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and hemoglobin. The purpose of the study was to determine the status of anemia before and after the study. The study design is the pre-post test design. The population of the study was 30 third trimester pregnant women in the Tanjung Pinang City Primary Health Care Work Area. Respondents were given seaweed as much as 200 gram for 7 days and the 8th day repeated hemoglobin levels were measured. After being given an intervention, there was an increase in hemoglobin levels in pregnant women by 1.2gr% and there were no more respondents suffering anemia.   Keywords : consumption of seaweed, anemia in pregnancy

SummaryAdiponectin, which is secreted specifically from adipocyte, is thought to play a key role in the metabolic syndrome. We studied the associations of plasma adiponectin concentrations with blood cells and hepatopancreatic enzymes in 339 women aged 54.0 ± 0.8 (mean ± SE) years. Plasma adiponectin before and after adjustment for body composition or calculated insulin resistance increased in slight anemic women (372.6 ± 2.6 ×104/mm3) compared with non-anemic subjects (471.1 ± 1.7) (all p < 0.0001), and were inversely associated with red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin, hematocrit, white blood cells and platelet values (p < 0.0001 ∼ 0.02), independent of age, diastolic blood pressure, body mass index, serum triglyceride, insulin resistance or blood urea nitrogen. Age and adiponectin/body fat mass (%) were negative, and blood pressure and insulin resistance were positive significant independent determinants of RBC in stepwise regression analysis. Moreover, adiponectin before and after adjustment were inversely associated with serum ALAT,γGTP and ChE, and positively with amylase levels (p < 0.0001 ∼ 0.02). These results indicate the possibility that increased adiponectin may contribute to the suppressive bone marrow function in vivo. Combined with the leptin’s data, adipocyte derived proteins were related to the hematopoiesis, therefore it has shown the possible existence of adipose tissue/ bone marrow function linkage more clearly. Furthermore, hepatopancreatic enzyme associations with this protein may indicate the possibility that adiponectin will regulate the hepatopancreatic function in health and disease.

Abstract BACKGROUND Reference intervals are vital for interpretation of laboratory results. Many existing reference intervals for cerebrospinal fluid total protein (CSF-TP) are derived from old literature because of the invasive nature of sampling. The objective of this study was to determine reference intervals for CSF-TP using available patient data. METHODS Twenty years of hospital database information was mined for previously reported CSF-TP results. Associated demographic, laboratory, and clinical diagnosis (International Classification of Diseases 9/10 codes) details were extracted. CSF-TP results included 3 different analytical platforms: the Siemens Vista 1500, Beckman Lx20, and Roche Hitachi 917. From an initial data set of 19591 samples, the following exclusion criteria were applied: incomplete data, white blood cells (WBCs) &gt;5 × 106/L, red blood cells (RBCs) &gt;50 × 106/L, and glucose &lt;2.5 mmol/L. Patient charts were reviewed in detail to exclude 60 different conditions for which increases in CSF-TP would be expected. A total of 6068 samples were included; 63% of the samples were from females. Continuous reference intervals were determined using quantile regression. Age- and sex-partitioned intervals were established using the quantile regression equation and splitting age-groups into 5-year bins. RESULTS CSF-TP showed a marked age dependence, and males had significantly higher CSF-TP than females across all ages. CSF-TP results from the 3 different instruments and manufacturers showed small (approximately 0.04 g/L), but statistically significant, differences. CSF-TP showed weak, but again statistically significant, correlation with WBC and RBC but was independent of serum total protein and creatinine. CONCLUSIONS The age dependence of CSF-TP supports that age-partitioned reference intervals will be more accurate than a single cutoff, particularly in patients with advancing age.

Background: The most common cause of hyperthyroidism in areas without iodine deficiency is Graves’ disease. There are reports of some hematological alterations in hyperthyroidism. This study was designed to measure the hematologic profile in the patients with Graves’ disease before and after the treatment.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 100 patients were selected with convenience sampling that diagnosed as autoimmune Graves’ disease in our academic endocrinology clinic during 2014-2015. Inclusion criteria included autoimmune hyperthyroidism in patients who were referred to this center during the study period. Patients who refused to take part in the research, had recent infections disease, malignancies, surgical procedures, severe trauma, received immunosuppressive drugs or corticosteroids, high erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) values during the last six months, and not responded to treatment with methimazole were excluded from the study. The simple sampling technique was used to select the patients.   A complete blood count (CBC) was taken before and after treatment. The P-value less than 0.05 was considered as the statistical significance level. All data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 16.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) software.Results: One hundred patients with a mean age of 38 ± 9.8 years were included. There were no significant changes in the white blood cells (WBC) count, red blood cells (RBC) count, and platelets. Mild anemia (Hb=12.16±1.23) present before treating the hyperthyroidism that was significantly improved after treatment (P= 0.000). Conclusions: Our results showed that the only significant hematologic change in patients with Graves’ disease was mild anemia that improves after treating the underlying thyroid disorder.

We studied changes in the parameters of the general (clinical) blood test in dynamics in outpatient patients with an asymptomatic course and a mild degree of severity of COVID-19. The study involved 67 patients. 30 men and 37 women were examined, their average age was 35 years. All the interviewed patients did not take specific antiviral drugs. Clinical manifestations were evaluated at the time of the survey on the 1st and 7th day from the day of receiving a positive PCR result. The parameters of the general (clinical) blood test were determined by flow cytometry in the CBC + 5Diff mode on a Unicel® DxH 800 hematological analyzer (Beckman Coulter, USA) in dynamics on the 1st and 7th days of observation. The features of clinical manifestations in patients with an asymptomatic course and mild severity coincided with the data of other authors. Hematological changes were mainly characterized by changes in the number of white blood cells and their subpopulations. On the 7th day of observation, there was a significant tendency to increase the number of white blood cells, lymphocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils and platelets within the reference intervals.

Abstract It has much more advantages to preserve human red blood cells (RBC) in freezing and drying form than conventional blood storage, even though it is still under developing. In the present study, we successfully used 0.045% glutaraldehyde(GA) to fix RBCs under appropriate conditions prior to lyophilization and regained the bulk of RBCs membrane filterability. The phlebotomized whole blood was anti-coagulated with CPDA-1 and the plasma was removed by centrifugation. White blood cells were removed using Leucocytes filter (Pall Corporation). 1 x 10 9 cells/ml were separately incubated with 0.03%, 0.045% and 0.05% GA at 37 °C for 10 min; RBCs at concentrations 0.5 x 10 9, 1 x 10 9 and 2 x 10 9 cell/ml were incubated with 0.045% GA at 37 °C for 10 min; Bovine serum albumin (BSA), trehalose, hydroxyethyl starch and dextran were used as protective additive in freezing and drying RBCs, respectively; ethanolamine, glycine, lysine, BSA, glutamic acid and homocysteic acid were used to recover membrane deformability due to GA fixation. Recovery RBCs yield after reconstituion was determined by a cell counter. Fee hemoglobin , glutathione (GSH), 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG), ATP, and Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) in RBCs were determined before and after lyophilization. Membrane flexibility was assayed by osmotic fragility test. RBCs filterability was determined using positive filter apparatus through 5 micrometer pore size nitrocellulose membrane. Our results suggested that RBCs at 1 x 10 9 cells/ml fixed by 0.045% GA for10 min at pH 7.8 were enough to resist freezing and drying damages and the bulk of RBCs’s membrane filterability were remained. The effective fixation of GA is dependent on GA’s concentration, RBCs concentration, incubation period and pH etc. BSA is the most potential additive in preserving RBCs. More interestingly, the following reagents can recover the reduced RBCs membrane filterability by GA fixation. The potency of recovery is in the order of : 10 mM ethanolamine > 5 mM lysine > 0.5%BSA > 10 mM glutamatic acid > 5 mM homcysteic acid > 2% glycine. After reconstitution, 85 ± 2.3% RBCs yield is achieved, 71 ± 4.1% of these RBCs can freely pass through 5 micrometer pore size filter membrane. Biochemical function indexes as GSH, 2,3-DPG, ATP, and G-6-PDH are saved by 20 ± 1.2%. The Lusitano horse is an autochthonous Portuguese breed with a growing worldwide expansion. Our objective was to establish reference intervals for haematological parameters using the haematological cell counter LaserCyte (IDEXX). For this purpose, blood samples from 100 healthy adult horses (13 females and 87 males, ranging from 3 to 25 years of age) were analysed. The reference intervals were estimated following the ASVCP guidelines with the Reference Value Advisor software. The obtained reference intervals were 6.4–10.1 × 1012/L for red blood cells, 30.6–45.1% for haematocrit, 11.6–17.1 g/dL for haemoglobin, 42.8–53.2 fL for mean corpuscular volume (MCV), 15.5–20.8 pg for mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), 33.7–39.4 g/dL for mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, 17.8–20.3% for red cell distribution width (RDW), 4.5–10.1 × 109/L for white blood cells, 2.2–6.0 × 109/L for neutrophils, 0.9–4.9 × 109/L for lymphocytes, 0.2–0.5 × 109/L for monocytes, 0.1–0.6 × 109/L for eosinophils, 0.0–0.1 × 109/L for basophils, 78.5–172.2 K/mL for platelets, 4.3–9.4 fL for mean platelet volume, 18.8–24.2% for platelet distribution width, and 0.06–0.12% for plateletcrit. LaserCyte equine reference intervals are transferable to the Lusitano horse for 18 of the 22 analytes studied. Regarding age, significant statistical differences were observed for MCV, RDW, neutrophils and lymphocytes between the mean values of young (3–6 years old), middle-aged (7–14 years old) and old (< 15 years old) age groups. MCH means were statistically significantly different between the three age groups. The haematological reference intervals established in this study might represent a valuable and applicable tool for haematological assessment of adult Lusitano horses, providing useful information that helps clinicians to interpret clinical data.

Hemogram Reference intervals are established since a healthy population is critical to accurately interpret laboratory tests, which include Hemoglobin estimation, Red blood cells count and indices, White blood cells count and differential in addition to Platelets count. This study aims to establish the reference interval of the complete hemogram amongst healthy Sudanese children in Elobied city, Sudan. A descriptive cross-sectional study  included 354 healthy children, aged between 3 to 17 years, who were categorized into three groups according to age. A questionnaire was fulfilled, EDTA anti-coagulated venous blood sample was collected from each child then the complete hemogram was performed automated hematological analyzer (Sysmex Xp 300), Finally, Data was analyzed by a software program (SPSS version 21). The hematological reference intervals for healthy children [Hb g/dl, HCT%, RBCs count x106μL, MCV/fL ,MCH /pg., MCHC g/dl ,WBCs count x10³/μL, Neutrophil count%, Eosinophil count %, Basophile count %, lymphocyte count ,Monocytes count%, RDW CV and PLTs count×10³/μL] are [(12.4±1.2),(37±4),(5.0 ±0.4), (82±5.0), (26±3.0), (32±3.0) ,(7.0±2.0) (47±10), (1±0.1) ,(0±0),(45± 10),(7 ± 4), (13±1.8) &(227±91)] respectively. The hematological RI for healthy children in Elobied was established in this study to be representative of this population, there was a significant gender-based difference in all the evaluated hematological parameters, they were found to be higher in males than in females except for basophil (%). Finally, the results of this study would shed a light on the importance of establishing RI for the children population in Elobied.
