Hemogram Reference intervals are established since a healthy population is critical to accurately interpret laboratory tests, which include Hemoglobin estimation, Red blood cells count and indices, White blood cells count and differential in addition to Platelets count. This study aims to establish the reference interval of the complete hemogram amongst healthy Sudanese children in Elobied city, Sudan. A descriptive cross-sectional study  included 354 healthy children, aged between 3 to 17 years, who were categorized into three groups according to age. A questionnaire was fulfilled, EDTA anti-coagulated venous blood sample was collected from each child then the complete hemogram was performed automated hematological analyzer (Sysmex Xp 300), Finally, Data was analyzed by a software program (SPSS version 21). The hematological reference intervals for healthy children [Hb g/dl, HCT%, RBCs count x106μL, MCV/fL ,MCH /pg., MCHC g/dl ,WBCs count x10³/μL, Neutrophil count%, Eosinophil count %, Basophile count %, lymphocyte count ,Monocytes count%, RDW CV and PLTs count×10³/μL] are [(12.4±1.2),(37±4),(5.0 ±0.4), (82±5.0), (26±3.0), (32±3.0) ,(7.0±2.0) (47±10), (1±0.1) ,(0±0),(45± 10),(7 ± 4), (13±1.8) &(227±91)] respectively. The hematological RI for healthy children in Elobied was established in this study to be representative of this population, there was a significant gender-based difference in all the evaluated hematological parameters, they were found to be higher in males than in females except for basophil (%). Finally, the results of this study would shed a light on the importance of establishing RI for the children population in Elobied.

Abstract Background: Hematological reference intervals are used for medical decision tools for interpretation of numerical test results. Establishing of hematological interval among newborn babies is very important for the diagnosis of malignancy, anemia, bleeding disorders, and various infections. There is no locally established hematological reference intervals in Ethiopia. Thus, the aim of this study is to established locally determined hematological reference interval among full-term newborns.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted from February to May 2019 among 151 apparently healthy full-term newborns at Gondar University Hospital. About 3ml of cord blood was obtained for analysis of Hematological parameters and determined by using Sysmex KX-21N (Sysmex Corporation Kobe, Japan) automated analyzer. Median, 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles were computed.Result: Males to female’s ratio was almost equal. All hematological parameter had no statistically significant difference between males and females. The delivery types were not influenced its hematological values. The reference interval of white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean cell volume, and mean cell hemoglobin were (7.64-22.16) x109/l, (3.69-5.47)x1012/l, (132.74-413.4) x109/l, (13.32-19.64) g/dl and (39.42-58.06)%, (91.6-113.22)fl, and (30.48-38.02)pg, respectively.Conclusion: All hematological reference interval was established from full-term newborns at University of Gondar hospital was different from other studies in Nigeria, Iraq, Pakistan, Nepal, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Therefore, own determined reference value is very important for the clinicians to correctly diagnosis the patients at health facility levels.

Background: To survey for evaluation the use of antibiotic for diarrhea treatment on pediatric inpatient in compliance with MOH, WHO or treatment regimen. Objectives: (1) To describe the situation of antibiotic use for diarrhea treatment and (2) to determine factors that affected on indication of antibiotic for pediatric inpatient under 15 years at Kien Giang General Hospital in 2019. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study on 251 medical records of pediatric inpatients who treated by one of any drug from 01/2019 to 12/2019. Results: one antibiotic was prescribed in 71.7% in comparison with 17.1% on two antibiotics. The antibiotic prescription was based on the results of blood test including examinations of white blood cells (WBC), the percentage of neutrophils (Neu%) and/or C-reactive protein (CRP) (59.4%), stool with white blood cells and/or red blood cells (1.6%), high fever without causes (27.9%), watery stool (86.3%), loose stool with blood (100%), loose stool (97.9%). The most used antibiotics are ceftriaxone (53.4%), ciprofloxacin (12.4%). Duration of antibiotic use is 5 days in median. Conclusion: The rate of antibiotic prescription that met MOH and WHO guidelines was 88.3% in comparison with 11.7% of non-conformance. The compliance prescriptions based on antibiogram were 77.8%, non-compliance were 22.5%. The compliance dosage refered to guideline was 86.4%, non-conpliance was 2.4%. The duration of hospitalization and neutrophil are factors that affected the use of antibiotics (p < 0.05). Purpose The elevated white blood cells (WBCs) count has been reported to be a predictor of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. This study aims to determine the associations between WBCs count and obesity in apparently healthy young adults. Design/methodology/approach In this cross-sectional study, the authors evaluated the body mass index (BMI) in 392 apparently healthy young adults of both sexes. The WBCs count was measured using standard counter techniques. The inclusion criteria were the agreement to participate in the study, between 18 and 25 years of age, lack of self-reported diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, kidney and infectious diseases. Findings According to the BMI classification, underweight and overweight or obesity were observed in 14.58 and 11.48 per cent of young adults, respectively. The mean WBC was 6.5 ± 1.5 (×10³ cells/µL). Higher values of WBCs were found in women than in men (p = 0.02). The young adults with higher BMI had a higher WBCs count. There was a positive correlation between WBCs count and weight and BMI (r = 0.19 and r = 0.22, p < 0.001, respectively). Research limitations/implications This research was a cross-sectional study. Future studies are suggested using longitudinal studies to examine more relationships between obesity and WBCs count in apparently healthy young adults. Practical implications The results of this study provide evidence for weight management in this age group to reduce diseases associated with increased WBCs count. Originality/value The WBCs count was related to increasing levels of BMI per cent 2 C even in the normal range.

Abstract This study sought to investigate the association of exposure to organochlorine (OC) and non-persistent pesticides with hematological parameters in an agricultural population in Southern Brazil. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a random sample of 275 farm workers and their families in Farroupilha-RS. A questionnaire was used to collect information on sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, duration, frequency and type of pesticide used, among others. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for serum concentration of 24 OC pesticides and hematological parameters. Associations were explored through linear regression, controlling for confounders. Lifetime use of chemical classes other than organophosphates and dithiocarbamates were associated with decreased number of lymphocytes, while subjects sampled in the high pesticide use season showed higher number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin level. Detectable serum levels of many OC pesticides were associated with lower counts of white blood cells, particularly eosinophils. Although mostly null associations were observed between pesticide use and hematological parameters, findings may suggest that OC pesticides could lead to hematological alterations among agricultural workers.

Background. Dengue is a mosquito-borne flavivirus infection prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Aim of this study was to determine seroprevalence of anti-dengue IgG antibodies in healthy adult population of Lahore and also describe risk factors in relation to dengue seropositivity. Methods. In this cross-sectional study, 274 healthy adult individuals aged 15 years and above were randomly selected using multistage sampling technique. These individuals were interviewed between July–September 2012, using a semistructured questionnaire, followed by drawing 3 mL of their venous blood for dengue IgG test. Nova Tech ELISA kit with sensitivity and specificity of 96.5% and 97.5%, respectively, was used for serology. Results. Out of 274 participants, 184 (67.2%) were found to be positive for dengue IgG antibodies. Seroprevalence was higher among individuals with poor awareness about potential breeding sites for dengue mosquito (63.6%), followed by the subjects who had poor knowledge about dengue signs/symptoms and complications (52.2% and 68.5%, resp.). Conclusion. About two-third of healthy population of Lahore was also seropositive for anti-dengue IgG during July–September 2012, indicating a considerable burden of subclinical dengue infection in the city. Males were predominantly affected than the females. We found no statistical association between dengue IgG seropositivity and socioeconomic status, occupation, and knowledge about the disease.

We studied changes in the parameters of the general (clinical) blood test in dynamics in outpatient patients with an asymptomatic course and a mild degree of severity of COVID-19. The study involved 67 patients. 30 men and 37 women were examined, their average age was 35 years. All the interviewed patients did not take specific antiviral drugs. Clinical manifestations were evaluated at the time of the survey on the 1st and 7th day from the day of receiving a positive PCR result. The parameters of the general (clinical) blood test were determined by flow cytometry in the CBC + 5Diff mode on a Unicel® DxH 800 hematological analyzer (Beckman Coulter, USA) in dynamics on the 1st and 7th days of observation. The features of clinical manifestations in patients with an asymptomatic course and mild severity coincided with the data of other authors. Hematological changes were mainly characterized by changes in the number of white blood cells and their subpopulations. On the 7th day of observation, there was a significant tendency to increase the number of white blood cells, lymphocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils and platelets within the reference intervals.

AbstractInterpretation oflaboratory test results requires comparison to some type of reference value or reference interval. These comparisons can be cross-sectional (population-based reference interval and cut-off values) or longitudinal (reference change value). Quality specifications for cross-sectional comparison have been established by determining the influence of analytical bias and imprecision on the percentage ofthe healthy population falling outside the reference limits, when sharing population-based reference intervals in a Gaussian distribution ofresults. Quality specifications for longitudinal comparisons are equally important and are often overlooked, since less work has been done in this area. Some criteria suggest that a difference between consecutive results designates a true change in a patient health status when the difference is higher than the within-subject biological variation plus the within-laboratory analytical variation. In this chapter we discuss the clinical considerations and laboratory-related factors that must be considered when quality specifications are applied to sharing reference comparisons. Real life experience shows that different analytical methods can produce comparable results when common quality goals are established, and quality can be achieved through a willingness to work together. Within the existing organization, the current specifications for analytical quality and a dedication to quality health care makes it possible to achieve transferability between laboratories within a geographic area.

Objective: To investigate the changes in levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and hematological parameters among smokeless tobacco (SLT) users. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at the community level in the coastal districts of Sindh province namely Badin, Thatta, and Sujawal from January 2017 to December 2019. The CRP and hematological parameters were evaluated by well-established methods among SLT and non-SLT users. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between SLT users (mean CRP = 0.77) versus non-users (mean CRP = 0.18), p = <0.001. Among hematological parameters, white blood cells (SLT users median = 7.85 versus non-SLT users median = 8.50, p = 0.004), monocytes (SLT users median = 6.00 versus non-SLT users median = 6.00, p = 0.001) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (SLT users median = 15.00 versus non-SLT users median = 10.00, p = 0.006) showed statistically significant difference. Conclusions: Significantly elevated CRP was observed in SLT users similarly hematological parameters also showed changes. WBCs, monocytes and ESR were significantly deranged among SLT users. Introduction: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), an acute complication of type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes mellitus (T1DM), can be precipitated by infection. Procalcitonin (PCT) is an accurate marker of bacteremia, sepsis, and inflammation, however white blood cells (WBC) are still often used by clinicians. We aimed to analyze PCT levels and WBC counts in children with DKA.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia, between 2015 and 2019. T1DM and DKA diagnosis was based on the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes. PCT levels and WBC counts were measured in samples from patients with and without DKA, and were compared using the Mann-Whitney test.Results: A total of 41 samples were included, with 15 samples (36.6%) from children with DKA, and 26 (63.4%) from children without DKA. PCT levels and WBC counts were significantly higher in those with DKA (p<0.001). The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of WBC was lower than PCT (0.849 vs. 0.982). PCT had a higher sensitivity and spesificity as an infection marker than WBC (93.3 vs. 86.7; 92.3 vs. 88.5, respectively).Conclusion: PCT is a better infection marker in children with DKA than WBC
