Background Short-term memory (STM) decline in breast cancer patients resulting from chemotherapy was evaluated by means of blood biomarkers, a questionnaire, and a computerized STM test. Methods This study was conducted from January 2013 to June 2013, recruiting 90 subjects: 30 breast cancer patients beginning the 3rd of 4th cycles of docetaxel and cyclophosphamide chemotherapy, 30 recovered patients (who completed 4 cycles of docetaxel for a minimum of 6 months), and 30 healthy subjects (disease-free females). The levels of hemoglobin, red and white blood cells, and cortisol in serum, and a computerized STM test were analyzed to estimate the effects of chemotherapy on STM. A questionnaire was given to all subjects to assess quality of life. Results Statistically significant differences were observed for the blood parameters (hemoglobin, red and white blood cells, and cortisol levels) between healthy and on-treatment subjects (respectively 13.47±0.96 g/dL vs 5.37±0.38 g/dL, 4.58±0.41 1012/L vs 2.07±0.13 1012/L, and 6.15±1.03 109/L vs 0.86±0.41 109/L). Scores of the STM test were significantly lower for patients compared to healthy subjects. As indicated by the results of the questionnaire, breast cancer patients had a higher tendency to forget than healthy controls (X2=3.15; p<0.0001) and recovered subjects (X2=3.15; p<0.0001). Conclusion We found depleted levels of hemoglobin, red and white blood cells as a result of chemotherapy, and elevated levels of stress correlated with poor performances in the computerized STM test. A higher cortisol level might be an important precursor of STM deterioration. Monitoring cortisol would be beneficial for evaluating the quality of life of breast cancer patients on chemotherapy.

Objectives: Evaluate serum bilirubin in adult healthy subjects and its correlation with white blood cells as risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Study Design: Cross- sectional study. Setting: Department of Pharmacology and Medicine, Suleman Roshan Medical College. Period: January - December 2017. Material & Methods: A sample of 100 male and 100 female adult healthy subjects were recruited for study protocol. Blood glucose, Serum creatinine, Blood lipids, liver enzyme levels, White blood cell counts and Serum bilirubin levels were analyzed. Pearson`s correlation was used for the correlation coefficient and its statistical significance for the association of serum bilirubin and white blood cells. Data variables were analyzed by statistical software SPSS (ver 21.0) at 95% CI (P ≤ 0.05). Results: Mean± SD age of male and female was found 47.02±8.42 and 48.59±7.80 years respectively (P=0.071). Serum bilirubin shows statistically significant negative correlation with blood glucose (r= - 0.257, P=0.0001) and LDLc (r= - 0.155, P=0.027) and WBC (r= - 0.871, P=0.0001). Conclusion: The present study shows the elevated serum total bilirubin levels within reference range correlated negatively with total white blood cells in adult healthy population.

Background: A significant effect of yoga has been noticed in decreasing the blood glucose level, the heart rate, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Blood contains predominantly three types of blood cells including red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC) and Platelets. Methods- The study was carried out 100 volunteers. Study group comprised 50 male and 50 female healthy subjects of 18-20 years. Hematological parameters like total RBC Count, total W.B.C Count, hemoglobin content/dl and total Platelet count were determined by Improved Version of automated hematology auto-analyzer. For this Hemogram study, 5 ml of blood was collected in EDTA Vial under aseptic precautions. Results: Regular practice of yoga for 3 months significantly improved the R.B.C., W.B.C., Platelet count and Hb content. Conclusion- We concluded that regular practice of yoga for promotes trafficking of the stem cells from bone marrow and improve hematological parameters in anemia. Introduction Sickle cell disease is a genetic abnormality involving the hemoglobin. Although it is primarily a red blood cell disorder, the white blood cells and platelets are also affected by the mutation. The consequence hemoglobin S causing polymerization of hemoglobin, results in hemolysis and anemia. This study aims to provide baseline hematologic parameters in steady state sickle cell disease patients compared with the reference values of normal healthy subjects used at the Chantal Biya Foundation (CBF), in order to monitor other sicklers in Cameroon. Methodology A comparative analysis of sickle cell hematologic parameters with control hematologic parameters of normal healthy subjects (reference values of healthy subjects used at the Chantal Biya Foundation) was carried out. Results A total of 62 sickle cell disease patients in steady state who complied with the selection criteria were recruited. Of the 62, 29 were females and 33 were males. The age range was from 1 year to 19 years and an average age of 6 ± 4.19 SD. Results from sickle cell patients showed an increase in white blood cells (WBCs), neutrophils and lymphocytes and a great decrease in the mean values of hematocrit Hct. as well as RBC indices, but no great or slight difference in the values of basophils compared with the reference values of normal healthy subjects in the CBF Yaoundé, 2015. Conclusion Sickle cell disease patients in steady state have lower values of red cells parameters, but higher values of white cells and platelets count when compared with the reference values of normal healthy subjects used at the Chantal Biya Foundation.

Introduction: Exercise at various durations and intensities impact on blood and stem cells. This pilot study examined the effects of 30 minutes of treadmill walking on hematological indices and progenitor stem cells CD34+ in healthy subjects. Materials and methods: A total of 17 non-smoking, healthy students, aged 20 to 22 years participated. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, white blood cells, platelets, and stem cell CD34+ numbers were assessed before and after moderate exercise. Statistical analyses examined the relationships between CD34+ cells versus hematological indices, age, and body mass index. Results: Following exercise, significant increases were observed in leukocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, and CD34+ cells numbers. For CD34+ cells, a fourfold increase was seen. Significant correlations between CD34+ cells, white blood cells, and neutrophils were found. Conclusion: Our results suggest that moderate exercise has a physiological impact on hematologic parameters and stem cells CD34+ in healthy subjects. Furthermore, our findings suggest that brief treadmill exercise may enhance tissue repair mechanisms so important in physiotherapy.

Periodontal diseases, which result from inflammation of tooth supporting tissues, are highly prevalent worldwide. Myeloperoxidase (MPO), from certain white blood cells in saliva, is a biomarker for inflammation. We report our study on the salivary MPO activity and its association with severity of periodontal diseases among Thai patients. Periodontally healthy subjects (n=11) and gingivitis (n=32) and periodontitis patients (n=19) were enrolled. Assessments of clinically periodontal parameters were reported as percentages for gingival bleeding index (GI) and bleeding on probing (BOP), whereas pocket depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were measured in millimeters and then made to index scores. Salivary MPO activity was measured by colorimetry using 3,3′-diaminobenzidine as substrate. The results showed that salivary MPO activity in periodontitis patients was significantly higher than in healthy subjects (p=0.003) and higher than in gingivitis patients (p=0.059). No difference was found between gingivitis and healthy groups (p=0.181). Significant correlations were observed (p<0.01) between salivary MPO activity and GI (r=0.632, p<0.001), BOP (r=0.599, p<0.001), PD (r=0.179, p=0.164), and CAL (r=0.357, p=0.004) index scores. Sensitivity (94.12%), specificity (54.55%), and positive (90.57%) and negative (66.67%) predictive values indicate that salivary MPO activity has potential use as a screening marker for oral health of the Thai community.

AbstractThe balance between reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant activity has an important role in oxidative stress associated diseases such as phenylketonuria (PKU). We aimed in this study to evaluate the possible association between oxidative balance and clinical features of PKU patients.Twenty patients and 50 healthy subjects were selected. Prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) was measured and phenylalanine (Phe), tyrosine (Tyr), Phe/Tyr ratio and hematological indices were determined.A significantly higher PAB value was observed in the patient group (152.0±14.1 HK unit) compared to the controls (88.1±13.88 HK) (p<0.05). There was significant correlation between PAB with serum Phe, Tyr, Phe/Tyr ratio, white blood cells (WBC) and red blood cells (RBC) counts.The serum PAB values were higher in patients with PKU and this was associated with the serum Phe and Tyr and Phe/Tyr ratio. Therefore, because of its low cost and simplicity to perform, PAB value might be considered as a useful monitoring marker among the other tools in these patients.

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from all three waveband regions of the UV spectrum, UVA (320-400 nm), UVB (290-320 nm), and UVC (200-290 nm), can be emitted by some medical devices and consumer products. Sunlamps can expose the blood to a considerable amount of UVR, particularly UVA and/or UVB. The percent transmission of each waveband through the epidermis to the dermis, which contains blood, increases in the order of increasing wavelength: UVC (10%) < UVB (20%) < UVA (30%). To investigate the effects of UVR on white blood cells, we chose transmission electron microscopy to examine the ultrastructure changes in L5178Y-R murine lymphoma cells.

SummaryThe effect of red blood cells, rbc, and shear rate on the ADPinduced aggregation of platelets in whole blood, WB, flowing through polyethylene tubing was studied using a previously described technique (1). Effluent WB was collected into 0.5% glutaraldehyde and the red blood cells removed by centrifugation through Percoll. At 23°C the rate of single platelet aggregtion was upt to 9× greater in WB than previously found in platelet-rich plasma (2) at mean tube shear rates Ḡ = 41.9,335, and 1,920 s−1, and at both 0.2 and 1.0 µM ADP. At 0.2 pM ADP, the rate of aggregation was greatest at Ḡ = 41.9 s−1 over the first 1.7 s mean transit time through the flow tube, t, but decreased steadily with time. At Ḡ ≥335 s−1 the rate of aggregation increased between t = 1.7 and 8.6 s; however, aggregate size decreased with increasing shear rate. At 1.0 µM ADP, the initial rate of single platelet aggregation was still highest at Ḡ = 41.9 s1 where large aggregates up to several millimeters in diameter containing rbc formed by t = 43 s. At this ADP concentration, aggregate size was still limited at Ḡ ≥335 s−1 but the rate of single platelet aggregation was markedly greater than at 0.2 pM ADP. By t = 43 s, no single platelets remained and rbc were not incorporated into aggregates. Although aggregate size increased slowly, large aggregates eventually formed. White blood cells were not significantly incorporated into aggregates at any shear rate or ADP concentration. Since the present technique did not induce platelet thromboxane A2 formation or cause cell lysis, these experiments provide evidence for a purely mechanical effect of rbc in augmenting platelet aggregation in WB.
