Studies were conducted in 2003 and 2004 to determine the effect of application timing and halosulfuron rate on sweetpotato yield and quality. Halosulfuron was applied 1, 2, and 4 wks after transplanting (WAP) sweetpotato in 2003, and 2, 3, and 4 WAP in 2004. Treatments within each timing included halosulfuron at 13, 26, 39, 52, and 65 g ai/ha plus a weed-free control. Combined over year, site, cultivar and rate, halosulfuron applied at 1, 2, 3, and 4 WAP stunted sweetpotato 32, 15, 11, and 14%, respectively, rated 2 wks after treatment. The stunting observed with the 1 and 2 WAP timings caused a 17 and 10% reduction in yield of No. 1 roots, respectively, compared with the weed-free control. The 3 and 4 WAP timings of halosulfuron did not reduce yield of No. 1 roots. Total yield was reduced approximately 11% at the 1, 2, and 3 WAP application timings. Halosulfuron at 4 WAP did not reduce total yield. Combined over year, site, and cultivar, halosulfuron applied at 39 g/ha did not reduce the weight of No. 1 roots or total crop yield and thus could be an effective POST option for weed control in sweetpotato.

The importance of falling progesterone (P4) concentrations in the initiation of parturition and the onset of lactogenesis in many species has long been recognised (Thorburn, et al., 1972). O'Doherty and Crosby (1996) reported a negative linear relationship between P4 concentration at 1 hour post lambing and colostrum yield at 1 h and total yield at 18 h. The administration of progesterone failed to delay parturition when given at a daily dose of 80 mg for a week but larger doses of progesterone (160 mg/day) blocked term labour in most sheep (Bengtsson and Schofield, 1963). The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of exogenous progesterone administration to ewes in late pregnancy on ewe serum progesterone concentrations, gestation length and colostrum yield and quality.

The study was carried out during summer of 2012 with BARI hybrid tomato 4, planted in the Olericulture farm of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur, Bangladesh to find out the response of plants to some staking and pruning treatments on yield, fruit quality and cost of production. A two factor experiment consisting of three staking methods and four level of pruning, laid out in complete block design with three repetitions. Plants were staked on inverted „V? shaped staking, high platform and string. The plants were pruned to two stem, three stem, four stem and no pruning as control. Results showed that significantly the highest total number of fruits per plant (37.1), marketable fruits per plant (33.7), yield per plant (1.68 kg) and total yield (44.6 t/ha) were produced by the plants having the treatment string staking with four stem. The highest fruit set (43.50%) was found in the plants staking with string having three stems. Plants grown on string staking allowing two stem gave the maximum length (4.71 cm), diameter (4.83 cm) and weight (53.4g) of single fruit as well as maximum fruit firmness (3.43 kg-f cm-2). From the economic point of view, it was apparent that summer tomato produced by string staking with four stem pruning exhibited better performance compared to other treatment combinations in relation to net return and BCR (2.10).Bangladesh J. Summary. The effect of plant density on growth, development, yield and quality of kabocha (buttercup squash) (Cucurbita maxima) was examined during 1992–93, at a field site in Cambridge, Tasmania. Plant densities ranged between 0.5 and 4.7 plants/m2. Marketable and total yields were fitted to a yield–density model. Total yield followed an asymptotic trend, approaching 33 t/ha at 4.7 plants/m2, while marketable yield had a parabolic relationship with density. Marketable yield increased to a maximum of 18 t/ha at 1.1 plants/m2, while declining at higher densities because of increased numbers of undersized fruit. Yield of vine marked and callused fruit did not vary with density, but represented a significant proportion of the total yield at all densities. High plant density reduced vegetative growth per plant due to competition for limited resources; as shown by decreased leaf area, number and length of vines, and plant dry weight. Yield tended to decline at high densities because of fewer female flowers and increased fruit abortion per plant. Plants at low densities had more vegetative growth but decreased yields, as increased abortion of fruit relative to the higher plant densities left only 1–2 large fruit per plant. Economic returns varied with plant density. At high densities, variable costs increased (particularly due to high seed cost) while gross income declined reflecting the relationship between marketable yield and plant density. The gross margin therefore declined at high densities.

Research has been carried out to determine the effect of the roll gap of the aggregate mini mill “Melnik 100 Lux” on the yield of wheat, rye and triticale flour. The technological scheme of a mini-mill consists of only 3 systems - two torn and one grinding, which are clearly not enough to separate the grain of various crops into anatomical parts during grinding to obtain high-quality bakery flour. Based on the results of the studies, the optimal roll-to-roll clearances of the aggregate mill installation "Melnik 100 Lux" were established. For wheat milling, they were 0.25 mm on the I  torn system and 0.15 mm on the II torn system, for rye milling they were 0.25 mm on the I torn system and 0.15 mm on the II torn system and triticale grinding was 0.20 mm on the I torn system and 0.10 mm on the II torn system. The highest total yield of wheat bakery flour with optimal parameters of the roll gap was 71.7 %, incl. 44.4 % premium flour and 27.3 % first grade flour; the highest total yield of rye bakery flour with optimal parameters of the roll gap was 70.0 %, incl. 52.2 % seeded premium rye flour and 17.8 % special rye flour; the highest total yield of triticale bakery flour with optimal parameters of the roll gap was 72.2 %, incl. 48.1 % triticale flour of the highest grade T-60 and 17.8 % triticale flour T-80.

Evaluations of 30 triploid (seedless) watermelon hybrids were conducted in the Spring 1989 season at Bradenton and Leesburg, Florida. There was considerable variation in relative cultivar yields at the two locations. However, consistency in some cultivars did occur. 'HMX 7924' produced the highest total yield and 'CFREC 88-2' had high total yields at both locations. On the other hand, 'ACX 882322', 'Fengshan No. 1', 'FMX 28', 'Fummy', 'Honeyheart', 'Nova', and 'NVH 4295' produced low total yields at both locations. Average fruit weight was high for 'Ssuper Sweet Brand 5244', 'CFREC 88-4', and 'HMX 7924' whereas 'ACX 882322', 'FMX 28', 'Fengshan No. 1', 'Nova', and 'PSR 49087' produced low average fruit weight. Soluble solids exceeded 11% in all entries at Bradenton whereas two entries were lower than 10% at Leesburg. Several experimental lines out performed the named cultivars suggesting that future introductions will be superior to those already available.

Parts of Colorado receive more hail than almost any other area in the nation. Severe storms can injure crop tissue and, thus, lower yield and predispose the crop to disease infection. Our study was conducted to determine the yield and quality response of carrot (Daucus carota L.) to simulated storm damage during different periods of plant development. We removed 33% and 67% of the carrot foliage at four dates, spaced 10 days apart, during the middle of the growing season. In 1997 and 1998, 67% defoliation significantly reduced total and marketable yields more than did 33% defoliation. Total yield components, length and diameter, were similarly affected. Defoliation, in general, decreased yield the greatest when it when it occurred at the later stages of development. Carrot foliage continued to develop and grow after all defoliation events. Nonetheless, moderate (33%) and severe (67%) foliage loss reduced marketable yield and yield components of carrots.

Most seedless watermelons are grown on black polyethylene mulch to aid crop establishment, growth, yield, and quality and weed control. However, nutsedge is a persistent problem in this production system, as it can easily penetrate the mulch. Halosulfuron-methyl is registered in some crops and provides excellent yellow nutsedge control. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of reduced halosulfuron-methyl contract to the watermelon plant on fruit yield and quality. The seedless watermelon cultivars, Tri-X-313 and Precious Petite, were transplanted into black polyethylene mulch and sprayed 16 days later. Halosulfuron-methyl at 35 g a.i./ha plus 0.25% (v/v) nonionic surfactant was applied at 187 L·ha–1 with a TeeJet 8002 even tip nozzle. Treatments were no spray, 25% of the vine tips, 25% of the crown, and over the top (entire plant). Plants in each treatment were rated (0% = no damage, 100% = fatality) for herbicide injury and the longest vine was measured on four plants. The no-spray treatment had the longest vines (156 cm). The topical halosulfuron treatment resulted in the shortest vines (94 cm) and the highest visual damage rating (63%). The herbicide caused foliage to yellow, internodes to shorten, and stems to crack. Treatments receiving halosulfuron-methyl applied to 25% of the vine (tip end) or 25% of the vine (crown end) resulted in reduced injury compared to the topical application. Generally, the 25% vine tip application was the safest halosulfuron treatment. The total yield (kg·ha–1) and number of watermelons/ha were similar among treatments. The no-spray treatment produced 4450 kg·ha–1 and 8300 watermelons/ha. The over-top treatment produced 3500 kg·ha–1 and 7300 watermelons/ha. Watermelon in the no-spray treatment weighed 4.4 kg, while watermelons weighed 3.9 kg with the over the top treatment. Halosulfuron-methyl is registered to apply to middles between watermelon rows; however, topical applications are prevented due to the possibility of crop injury. This research suggests that reduction of topical application to only 25% contact of the crop may improve crop tolerance. Thus application to nutsedge patches where limited contact to watermelon occurs may be a possibility in the future.

Malt barley production requires a technology increasing nitrogen use efficiency, because of a high sensitivity of barley total grain yield and quality parameters to external growth factors. In the conducted study an effect of two P fertilizers on the background of N application on total and technological grain yields were studied. The highest total grain yield was harvested on plots fertilized with 60 kg N/ha, irrespective of the P fertilizer type. However, the technological grain yield showed a high year-to-year variability; the highest was recorded in 2001 on the plot fertilized with 60 kg N/ha and the P-PAPR fertilizer. The N and S concentrations and N:S ratios in immature grains at harvest were used to evaluate both yield types. Nitrogen concentration in the final total yield allowed making yields prognosis with the highest probability. The maximum yields of technological malt barley were attainable provided that total S concentration in immature grains at harvest was above 0.23% and the N:S ratio was narrower than 8.0.

В статье приведены результаты исследований по изучению влияния минеральных удобрений и куриного помета на продуктивность клубней картофеля отечественной и зарубежной селекции. В исследованиях, проведенных в 2017-2019 гг. на черноземе выщелоченном в условиях Пензенской области, установлено, что при внесении куриного помета и минеральных удобрений повышается урожайность и качество клубней, что непосредственно связано с обеспеченностью растений питательными веществами. Применение куриного помета в дозе 2 т/га позволило повысить общую урожайность клубней исследуемых сортов картофеля на 22,6-29,5, товарных клубней на 24,3-35,5 по сравнению с вариантом без удобрений. Наибольшую урожайность наблюдали на вариантах с совместным применением мочевины в дозе N30 и сульфата калия в дозе К60 и на вариантах с совместным применением аммофоски в дозе N30Р30К30 и сульфата калия в дозе К30. Применение умеренных доз минеральных удобрений и куриного помета в дозе 2 т/га увеличивает не только урожайность клубней картофеля, но и содержание в клубнях сухого вещества, крахмала и нитратов, не превышающих значения ПДК. Совместное применение азотно-калийных и азотно-фосфорно-калийных удобрений с добавлением сульфата калия в дозах К60 и К30 позволяют улучшить качественные показатели клубней по всем изучаемым сортам.The article presents the results of studies on the influence of mineral fertilizers and chicken manure on the productivity of potato tubers of domestic and foreign selection. In the studies conducted in 2017-2019 on leached chernozem under the conditions of the Penza region, it was found that when chicken manure and mineral fertilizers are applied, the yield and quality of tubers increases, which is directly related to the supply of plants with nutrients. The use of chicken manure at a dose of 2 t/ha allowed to increase the total yield of tubers of the studied varieties of potatoes by 22.6-29.5, marketable tubers by 24.3-35.5 compared with the variant without fertilizers. The highest yields were observed in variants with the combined use of carbamide in a dose of N30 and potassium sulfate at a dose K60 and in variants with a combined use of ammophos at a dose N30P30K30 and potassium sulfate at a dose K30.The use of moderate doses of mineral fertilizers and chicken manure at a dose of 2 t/ha increases not only the productivity of potato tubers, but also the content of dry matter, starch and nitrates in the tubers, not exceeding the MAC value. The combined use of nitrogen-potassium and nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizers with the addition of potassium sulfate at doses of K60 and K30 can improve the quality indicators of tubers for all studied varieties.
