Experimental researches were carried out during the years 2012–2017 at the farm "Povit-Agro", Bila Tserkva region, Kyiv Oblast, as well as at other farms. 1390 Ukrainian mulards were bred during these 2 years. Throughout our researches the French mulard was presented with 2425 1-day-old hybrid ducklings. In addition, during the studies, the 1-day-old ducklings of different breeds were assessed, namely ducklings of a domestic duck – 7579 heads, ducklings of a musk duck – 1685 heads. A comparative analysis of the effeciency of modern methods for determining the sex of young ducks of two species and of interspecies hybrid is conducted. It has been found that the highest accuracy of duckling sex determination (100%) of all genotypes is provided by the universal Japanese method (ventsexing), and a specific method - colorsexing (based on genetic markers of down coloring). Sidorov's method (probing of resonator of males) allows to determine the sex of domestic (but not musk) and mullard ducklings with an accuracy of 94–98% at a sorting rate of 300 g/h. The anatomical method is absolutely accurate, but it is associated with young ducks slaughtering. Morphosexing is effective for ducklings of all studied genotypes starting from the 2-month age . Morphosexing is effective for ducklings starting from the 2-month old of all studied genotypes. Beginning from 60 days old, the sex of ducklings of a musk duck, as well as mulards, can be determined due to the color and size of skin folds around the upper part of the beak with an accuracy of 97–99%. For the 2-month old ducklings of a domestic duck, sexual dimorphism is clearly expressed according to the other two features. Males at this age already have two twisted feathers in their tails, and females, unlike males, can quack loudly.

Darkling beetle Zophobas atratus (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) is recorded here for the first time as a new species for the fauna of Ukraine. Detailed study on morphology of preimaginal stages and biology of this species recently introduced to Ukraine, is given here. Zophobas atratus is an important species being easily reared in laboratory cultures and widely distributed in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Detailed descriptions of all life stages, including egg, young and older larvae, pupa and adult of Z. atratus are required for further taxonomical study of the genus Zophobas, which isn’t yet definitively established. New identification keys for adults and larvae of the genera of tribe Tenebrionini are presented here, based on a comparative analysis of the taxonomic characters of adults and larvae of Z. atratus and species from the genera Tenebrio and Neatus. Comparative analysis of morphology of larva of Z. atratus and larvae of the tribe Cteniopodini of close subfamily Alleculinae was conducted here. The subfamily Alleculinae previously had the rank of family Alleculidae, but our analysis confirmed the reliability of its current taxonomic position as subfamily. The study of morphology of larvae of 1st and 2nd instars of Z. atratus revealed that they are characterized by special taxonomic structures that are not characteristic for oldest instars of larvae of Z. atratus. These characters include absence of spines on caudal segment, presence of a set of 4 setae at posterior margin of tergites of prothorax, metathorax, and 1st to 8th abdominal segments, strongly convex 2nd antennal segment and sensory zone in the form of an open ring on its apex, and etc. Moreover, structure of antenna of larvae of Z. atratus is similar to that of oldest larvae of most species of darkling beetles of the fauna of Ukraine. The most distinctive features of Z. atratus are: sexual dimorphism in structure of clypeus of adults; filiform sclerotized antenna of larva with a continuous sensory zone at apex of 2nd segment, weakly developed 3rd segment; fusion of sclerotized pleurites of 1st–8th abdominal segments with their tergites; sexual dimorphism in structure of 9th abdominal segment of pupa, and presence of two hooks on apex of its appendages. The data of original study of features of life cycle of Z. atratus are given. The pictures and photos of details of morphology of egg, larvae, pupa and adult of Z. atratus are presented. It was recored that life cycle of Z. atratus from laying of egg to the emergence of adult continues from 169 up to 181 days. Adults lived maximum up to 206 days. Maturation of eggs in female after copulation continues 10-11 days. Stage of egg continues 7 days, larva – up to 151 days, including pre-pupal period from 6 to 22 days, pupa – from 8 to 21 days. Twelve larval stages of Z. atratus were recorded in laboratory culture.

Abstract Background Sex determination is one of the leading criterion in identification and verification of an individual. However, the potential roles of differences in adjacent fingerprint white line count (FWLC) in sex inference are not well elucidated in the literature especially among Hausa population. The study was conducted to determine sexual dimorphism and predict sex using adjacent digit FWLC difference (adj. DFWLCD) among Hausa population of Kano state, Nigeria. Methods The study population involved 300 participants. FWLC was determined from a plain fingerprint captured using live scanner. The formula for adj. DFWLCD of thumb and fifth digit is dR15 for right hand. The same applied for possible combination in cephalocaudal direction. Mann-Whitney and t tests were used for comparison of variables between sexes. Binary logistic regression analyses were employed for determination of sex. Results We observed a significantly larger adj. DFWLCD in males compared with females in most of the digit combination. A significant sexual dimorphism was observed in most of the adj. DFWLCD involving ring digit in both right (dR14, dR24, and dR34) and left (dL14, dL24, and dL34). The best discrimination was observed in adjacent FWLC difference of second and fourth digits in both right and left digits (dR24 and dL24). This was further supported by stepwise logistic regression analyses. Conclusion The adj. DFWLCD exhibits sexual dimorphism. The best prediction potentials were found to be dR24 and dL24 for right and left hands respectively.

AbstractThe determination of spatial ambit of the coastal State jurisdiction is fundamental for ocean governance and the same applies to the Arctic Ocean. In this regard, a question arises how it is possible to delimit marine spaces where the jurisdiction of two or more coastal States overlaps. Without rules on maritime delimitation in marine spaces where the jurisdiction of coastal States overlaps, the legal uses of these spaces cannot be enjoyed effectively. In this sense, maritime delimitation is of paramount importance in the Arctic Ocean governance. Thus, this study will examine Arctic maritime delimitations by comparing them to the case law concerning maritime delimitation. In so doing, this study seeks to clarify features of Arctic maritime delimitations.

The measurement of terminal productivity is the issue of extreme importance to both terminal owners and management and customers. As the sector of transport is highly intensive in terms of investments into the infrastructure, the productivity of a terminal may play a crucial role in competing with other terminals. Productivity is defined in terms of inputs and output. The majority of the available studies, wherein this issue is addressed, are generally focused on the determination of functional dependence between inputs and output using the method of regressive analysis. The present article provides an insight into the Data Envelopment Analysis method as a tool for measuring productivity. This technique enables a rather accurate evaluation of terminal productivity by means of comparative analysis, which, in fact, appears to be the only feasible alternative in cases where statistic data required for performing regressive analysis is lacking.

The data so far published on the diamagnetic susceptibilities of the alkaline halides, measured for the salts in the crystalline state, are very discordant and incomplete, as reference to Table I will show. The aim in carrying out these experiments has been twofold: firstly, to obtain a complete set of values for these salts and secondly to examine more closely than has hitherto been possible how rigorously the susceptibilities of simple crystalline salts are additive. It has already been established that the susceptibilities are approximately additive, but it has not been possible to test this with exactitude because of ( a ) the large discrepancies between the results obtained by previous observers, and ( b ) the lack of data for many crystals. The discrepancies may have arisen to some extent from the different experimental methods, some of which are more accurate than others and some of which may introduce errors peculiar to themselves. We have therefore made a complete re-determination of the susceptibilities of all the alkaline halides, using the same apparatus and method under the same conditions. Since any systematic experi-mental errors will affect all our results to approximately the same extent, we shall be in a stronger position for testing the additivity of the susceptibilities than if we rely partly on our own and partly on other observers’ results. Previous investigators have measured the susceptibilities of some compounds in the crystalline state and others in solution; the latter are of no help in connexion with our problem, for an examination of the available data suggests that solutions have susceptibilities higher by several per cent, than the corresponding crystals. We cannot, therefore, arrive at any certain conclusion by using results obtained partly for crystals and partly for solutions. 2—Method The method previously described has been used to obtain a complete set of values for the susceptibilities of the alkaline halides. Although slight modifications have been made from time to time, the apparatus has remained, in essentials, the same as when used for the measurement of the susceptibilities of the sodium and potassium halides.
