This paper presents the research conducted in 2003 by the Nursing Division of the Israeli Ministry of Health regarding the level of and predictors of pain knowledge and attitudes of Israeli nursing students and certifying nurses, in the context of the Division's educational policy. Cross-sectional descriptive in design, the research included first and fourth year baccalaureate students and nurses beginning and completing certification programs (N= 1149).Knowledge and attitudes, educational level, experience and success in pain care were examined via a questionnaire based on the McCaffery and Ferrell and Riddell and Fitche tools. Student's t-test, Pearson correlations and ANOVA were used for data analysis.Educational level was the strongest predictor of knowledge and attitudes among nursing students and certifying nurses, contributing most of the 42.8% explained variance. Small significant contributions were made by other variables. This indicates that formal education is a good vehicle for enhancing knowledge and attitudes.

Pain is the most common reason why people seek medical attention. Nurses are the professionals who spend more time and round the clock with patient than any other member of health care professions. Pain management is a priority in nursing care but nursing students often find it a challenge. That is why nurse must possess the basic knowledge to identify the presence of pain in patients, to measure its intensity and make the steps necessary for treatment. Nursing students must be adequately prepared, in terms of knowledge and skill, to manage pain. For that nurse educators need to understand nursing students' pain knowledge and attitudes in order to design interventions to enhance their readiness for pain management. Therefore, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the knowledge and attitudes regarding pain. The “Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain” tool was applied to 64 post basic bachelor nursing students by convenient purposive sampling from one private and one Government College. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The age of the respondents ranges from 19 to 32 years with the mean age of 24.23 years. Most of the nurses are from ICU ward and have more than 2 years of working experience. The result of the study showed that many of the respondents 70.31% (n=45) were having poor knowledge regarding pain, mostly knowledge regarding the pharmacological aspect (80%) were found insufficient and perception of patient’s pain (60%). There is a need to give much attention on pain management in nursing curricula because nurses performed an instrumental role in the assessment and evaluation of pain.

Pain is one of the commonest reasons why children visit the hospital. Inadequately treated pain in children can negatively affect their physical, psychological, and social well-being; it also places financial burden on families of affected children and healthcare systems in general. Considering the eventual suffering of vulnerable children and their families if nursing students are insufficiently educated and ill-prepared, the current study aimed at assessing final year nursing student’s knowledge and attitudes pertaining to pediatric pain. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 final year undergraduate nursing students at a private university college in Ghana. In addition to their ages and gender, the students responded to the 42 individual items on the Pediatric Nurses’ Knowledge and Attitudes Survey regarding pain (PNKAS) instrument. Descriptive statistical analysis was aided by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 25 software. The mean age of the final year nursing students was 29 years (range of 21 to 47 years); a majority of them were females (78%). Participants had an average (SD) correct answer score of 44.0% (10.6%). Good pediatric pain knowledge and attitudes were observed in items that were related to the individualized and multidimensional nature of the pain experience and its treatment, benefits of pre-emptive analgesia, pharmacodynamics, and pain assessment. Poor pediatric pain knowledge and attitudes occurred in items that focused on pain perceptions, opioid drug administration, useful pain medications, pain physiology, and nonpharmacological pain management interventions. Final year nursing students have insufficient knowledge and attitudes toward children’s pain management. Areas of good and poor pediatric pain knowledge and attitudes should be considered when designing and implementing educational interventions on this subject. Curricular revisions should be made on existing nursing curriculum to lay more emphasis on children’s pain management and use educational interventions that support knowledge translation for improved care.

AbstractObjectiveFor nursing students, competency in population health management involves acquiring knowledge and forming attitudes about the impact of the social determinants of health (SDoH) on health equity. The purpose of this pilot study was to assess nursing students’ knowledge and attitudes about the SDoH and health equity following a focused simulation activity.MethodBaccalaureate nursing students (N=182) participated in a ninety-minute health equity simulation and a post-simulation debrief. Forty-four students (23%) completed a 19-item post-simulation survey.ResultsSixty-four percent of participants reported positive attitude change in working with marginalized populations caused by the SDoH, and 89% reported being knowledgeable about the role of the registered nurse in addressing health equity. Seventy-five percent reported enhanced knowledge of the SDoH through the health equity simulation.ConclusionUsing health equity simulation may be effective in enhancing students’ knowledge, as well as their attitudes in caring for the health of marginalized populations by addressing the SDoH.

Healthy snacks are snacks that are clean, safe, healthy, and nutritious. The food safety of snacks sold in school environment cannot be guaranteed, so it can cause food poisoning among children. The importance of food safety knowledge can be used to prevent food poisoning from contamination such as biological, chemical, or physical contamination. Based on several studies, healthy snacks education can improve children’s knowledge and attitudes that related to the selection of healthy snacks by using various media. The purpose of this literature review is to determine the eff ect of nutrition education on knowledge and attitudes of elementary students in the selection of healthy snacks. This literature study included the articles which used experimental study with pre-test and post-test in elementary students as the subject. There are ten selected articles that were included in the review. The results indicated that nutrition education about healthy snacks could improve knowledge of students in selecting healthy snacks. Moreover, there were 6 articles showed that nutrition education could improve the attitudes of students in the selection of healthy snacks as well. Nutrition education can infl uence the knowledge and attitudes of elementary students in the selection of healthy snacks.

Aim: This study was conducted to determine knowledge levels and the factors affecting of  senior nursing students about epilepsy.Method: The study was conducted descriptively and cross-sectional between 17-27 January 2017 with 168 nursing senior students who agreed to participate in the study. The data was collected on social media with questionnaire which was composed of the literature review by the researchers. 15 of the questions were about socio-demographic characteristics and 20 of questions were about epilepsy. Analysing of data were carried out in a computer program by using percentage, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis-H test.Results: It was determined that mean score of the students' knowledge level about epilepsy is 81,10±7,27. There was a statistically significant relationship between where they got the information about epilepsy, care a patient previously had a seizure and mean scores of epilepsy knowledge level (p<0,05). It was determined that students ,who got information about epilepsy from the health personnel and those who care a patient previously had a seizure, had high mean scores.Conclusion: In the study, ıt was determined that nursing senior students’ knowledge level about the epilepsy is high; where they got the information about epilepsy, care a patient previously had a seizure affects epilepsy knowledge.Extended English abstract is in the end of PDF (TURKISH) file. ÖzetAmaç: Bu çalışma, hemşirelik son sınıf öğrencilerinin epilepsi hakkındaki bilgi düzeylerini ve etkileyen faktörleri belirlemek amacıyla yapıldı.Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışma, 17-27 Ocak 2017 tarihleri arasında çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 168 hemşirelik son sınıf öğrencisiyle tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel olarak yapıldı. Çalışmanın verileri sosyal medya aracılığı ile toplandı. Verilerin toplanmasında araştırmacılar tarafından literatür taranarak oluşturulan, 15’i sosyo-demogrofik özellikleri, 20’si epilepsi hakkında bilgi durumlarını ölçmeye yönelik sorudan oluşan soru formu kullanıldı. Veriler; bilgisayar ortamında, yüzdelik, Mann-Whitney U ve Kruskal Wallis-H testleri kullanılarak değerlendirildi.Bulgular: Öğrencilerin epilepsi bilgi düzeyleri toplam puan ortalamalarının 81,10±7,27 olduğu belirlendi. Öğrencilerin epilepsi hakkında bilgiyi nereden aldığı ve daha önce nöbet geçiren hastaya bakma durumları ile epilepsi bilgi düzeyi toplam puan ortalamaları arasında istatiksel olarak anlamlı ilişki olduğu saptandı (p<0,05). Sonuç: Çalışmada hemşirelik son sınıf öğrencilerinin epilepsi hakkındaki bilgi düzeylerinin yüksek olduğu; epilepsi hakkında bilgiyi nereden aldığı ve daha önce nöbet geçiren hastaya bakım vermenin epilepsi bilgi durumunu etkilediği belirlendi.
