Nursing students are valuable human resources. Detection of potential depression among nursing students is crucial since depression can lead to low productivity, minimized quality of life, and suicidal ideas. Identifying factors affecting depression among students can help nursing educators to find ways to decrease depression. The purpose of this study was to examine rates of depression and the associations between depression and stress, emotional support, and self-esteem among baccalaureate nursing students in Thailand. This correlational, cross-sectional study recruited 331 baccalaureate Thai nursing students. Students completed three instruments that had been translated into Thai: The Center for Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale, Perceived Stress Questionnaire, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Another instrument created in Thai was used to measure emotional support. Results revealed that, when using the standard definition, 50.1% of the students were depressed. Stress was positively related to depression, whereas emotional support and self-esteem were negatively related to depression.

Introduction:Insufficient research has been conducted into the factors that prompt young students to select nursing education as a profession in Saudi Arabia.Aim:The aim of the study is to identify factors affecting students' preference for nursing education and their intent to leave. Methods:This study follows a descriptive cross-sectional research design, with data collected by adapting the Tan-Kuick questionnaire to measure second-year nursing students’ (n=162) preference for nursing education and intent to leave one academic institution in Saudi Arabia. Results:Nursing image is identified as the major factor influencing the nursing students’ preference for nursing education in Saudi Arabia (69.89 ± 16.49), and parents' image of nursing is identified as the factor with the least amount of influence (34.52 ± 22.04). Additionally, more than half of the nursing students surveyed report intending to leave the nursing profession. Regarding the reasons for their intent to leave, a total of 70% of the surveyed nursing students report having no interest in the nursing profession. Family disagreement and societal image are also identified as common prompts to leave nursing. Conclusion:The study recommends the use of media to enhance the image of the nursing profession through the presentation of role models that talk to the students and encourage and motivate them to engage in the working life of a nurse. In addition, the study suggests replicating the longitudinal study for the same group in their third and fourth year of study to see if they leave the nursing profession.

Abstract Background Irrational use of antibiotics may adversely affect the treatment outcomes or even lead to increased antimicrobial resistance. We aimed to evaluate the level of theoretical knowledge of rational antibiotic use and awareness about antimicrobial resistance among the senior students at a medical school and the family physicians. Methods This study was cross-sectional research and was carried out between 01 February-30 April 2019 in Malatya province. Two-hundred twenty-five senior students in the Inonu University Medical School (Group 1) and 230 actively-working family physicians in Malatya primary healthcare services who were found eligible (Group 2). Power analysis was calculated as the minimum of 240 participants when considering a proportion difference of 0.18 between the groups, a type I error of 0.05 and a type II error of 0.20. A p<0.05 value was considered to be statistically significant. Results Researchers argued that penal sanctions can be more effective by developing strict use policies to raise awareness of resistance to antimicrobials. Group 2 had higher self-confidence, and it was also concluded that they forgot their theoretical antibiotic knowledge over time, and they could not follow the current information because of the intensity of their working life. Both groups stated that post-graduation training could be used effectively for reducing antimicrobial resistance. Conclusions This study attempted to increase awareness to determine the difference in theoretical knowledge levels and behavior models of physicians before and after graduation. Sustainable antibiotic training for doctors after graduation will contribute positive effects to antimicrobial resistance and rational use of antibiotics.

The prevalence of anaemia amongst pregnant women in developing countries is increasing yearly, particularly in Malaysia. This problem may be due to their lack of knowledge of anaemia and food choice. This study aimed to measure the knowledge levels on anaemia and iron absorption amongst pregnant women in Kuala Terengganu, as well as the association of knowledge levels between socio-demographic characteristics. Pregnant women were selected from government health clinics located in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. A total of 71 pregnant women aged between 18 and 44 years participated in the study. They self-administered the socio-demographic form and the knowledge questionnaire. Overall, they had moderate knowledge level with mean score of 57.41 ± 4.80. A significant association was found between knowledge level and monthly household income (p<0.05). Meanwhile, no significant association was found between knowledge level with socio-demographic characteristics (age, gravida, occupation, husband’s occupation, and education level) (p>0.05). This study provided an early insight into knowledge of anaemia amongst pregnant women in Kuala Terengganu. Educational intervention should be implemented to increase and improve pregnant women’s knowledge of anaemia and iron absorption.

The present study was carried out with a view to explore the proportion of mothers vaccinated by Measles Rubella (MR) vaccine and to assess their knowledge level regarding MR vaccine in Natore Sadar Upazila. This study was a cross-sectional type of descriptive study. A total 153 mothers were selected purposively as respondents. Of them 140 were pregnant. The present study showed that 40% of the respondents were in the age group of 20-24 years with mean age of the respondents being 25.2 ± 4.5 years. The respondents were predominantly Muslim (94.1%), literate (96.1%) pregnant (91.5%) and belonged to nuclear family (55.8%). Over three-quarters (75.2%) of the respondents had monthly family income of up to Taka 10,000 with average monthly income being Tk. 9975 ± 9112. Out of 153 respondents, about 44% were farmer. The respondents were invariably familiar (94.8%) with MR vaccine and were aware about the total number of MR vaccines to be received to develop full immunity against measles and rubella. Majority (91.5%) of their children received MR vaccine. Over 80% of the respondents knew the dose schedule of MR vaccine. However, approximately 95% of them did not know that MR vaccine is required during pregnancy. As association of demographic characteristics of the respondents with their level of knowledge on MR vaccine was analyzed, none of the demographic characteristics (age, educational status of the respondents, husband’s occupation and monthly income) were found to be associated with their knowledge level (p > 0.05). The study concluded that mothers, particularly pregnant mothers, know that there is a vaccine known as MR, but majority of them do not have adequate knowledge about target groups of this vaccine. This gap in knowledge should be minimized through health education to make wider coverage of the vaccine. TAJ 2019; 32(1): 1-8

This study investigated nursing students’ perceptions towards educational service quality provided by specialty departments at the Faculty of Nursing, Alexandria University. It also identified barriers and offers recommendations for improvement. A cross-sectional descriptive design was carried out utilizing a SERVPERF-based survey developed by Cronin and Taylor (1992) to measure students’ perceptions towards educational service quality. The participants’ responses to the reliability dimension (75.5 ± SD 12.7) were the highest scoring, while participants’ perceptions to the tangibles dimension were the lowest (61.0 ± SD 17.5). Further, students’ opinions regarding barriers to quality services were related to “limited time for study” and “inadequate equipment for clinical training”. Responses to positive factors affecting the quality of services were “accuracy of work”, “effective communication”, and “gaining new knowledge”, as perceived by students. The highest perceived service quality dimension among students was reliability followed by assurance, empathy, responsiveness, and tangibles. Moreover, the majority of students expressed that the Faculty of Nursing gave them prestige in the community, they were happy to study nursing, and they would not study in another higher educational institution even if they had an opportunity to do so.

Social media has been identified as a platform for student entrepreneurs to sell products and services, and to interact and connect with customers. However, the factors contributing to the adoption of social media as a platform among student entrepreneurs in Malaysia have not been established. This article aims to identify factors affecting the adoption of social media as a business platform among student entrepreneurs in Malaysia. This study employed a cross-sectional design and quantitative data was collected from 300 selected student entrepreneurs listed in the ‘entrepreneurship centres’ in all public universities in Peninsular Malaysia. Findings suggest that performance expectancy, perceived trust, perceived enjoyment and perceived risk have a significant positive effect on the adoption of social media. It is noted that there is a significant positive moderating effect of social influence between the relationship of facilitating conditions and the adoption of social media. Student entrepreneurs adopt social media as a business platform if they believe it improves their performance. Risk and trust are the most important factors influencing the adoption of social media as a business platform. Based on the findings, government agencies should promote social media as a business platform by instilling trust in the system with the hope that it will positively affect students’ entrepreneurial activities using social media as a business platform.
