The fact that block copolymers can assume a range of morphologies depending upon such variables as relative block length and molecular weight is now well known. In the case of poly(styrene)[PS]-poly(butadiene)[PB]-poly(styrene) (SBS) triblock copolymer, the morphologies range from spheres (roughly ~20% minor component), to cylinders (roughly 20%~35% minor component), to lamellae (roughly equal component fractions) Most recently, there has been increasing interest in transformations between morphologies by thermal annealing. This paper describes initial results studying the effect of solvent evaporation rate and post-casting annealing treatment on the morphology of SBS thin films.TEM specimens were prepared by solution casting electron transparent films. 50 μl of 0.1 wt% SBS (30% styrene, Mw=14,000, Scientific Polymer Products, Inc.) dissolved in toluene was deposited on a polished NaCl single crystal substrate placed in a small dish. After solvent evaporation the film was cut into small squares, floated from the salt in water, and each square was collected on a Cu grid.

ABSTRACTMesoporous materials have attracted considerable interest because of applications in molecular sieve, catalyst, and adsorbent. It will be useful for new functional device if functional molecules can be incorporated into the pore of mesoporous material. However, it is necessary to synthesize new mesoporous materials with controlled large pore size. Recently, new class of mesoporous materials has been prepared using triblock copolymer as a template. In this paper, we reported that hexagonal and cubic structure silicate mesoporous materials can be synthesized through triblock copolymer templating, and their size was controlled by synthesis condition at condensation.

Background and Objectives: To develop electro-sensitive transdermal drug delivery systems (ETDDS) using polyacrylamide-grafted-pectin (PAAm-g-PCT) copolymer hydrogel for rivastigmine delivery. Methods: Free radical polymerization and alkaline hydrolysis technique was employed to synthesize PAAm-g-PCT copolymer hydrogel. The PAAm-g-PCT copolymeric hydrogel was used as a reservoir and cross-linked blend films of PCT and poly(vinyl alcohol) as rate-controlling membranes (RCMs) to prepare ETDDS. Results: The pH of the hydrogel reservoir was found to be in the range of 6.81 to 6.93 and drug content was 89.05 to 96.29%. The thickness of RCMs was in the range of 51 to 99 μ and RCMs showed permeability behavior against water vapors. There was a reduction in the water vapor transmission rate as the glutaraldehyde (GA) concentration was increased. The drug permeation rate from the ETDDS was enhanced under the influence of electric stimulus against the absence of an electric stimulus. The increase in flux by 1.5 fold was recorded with applied electric stimulus. The reduction in drug permeability observed when the concentration of GA was increased. Whereas, the permeability of the drug was augmented as an electric current was changed from 2 to 8 mA. The pulsatile drug release under “on– off” cycle of electric stimulus witnessed a faster drug release under ‘on’ condition and it was slow under ‘off’ condition. The alteration in skin composition after electrical stimulation was confirmed through histopathology studies. Conclusion: The PAAm-g-PCT copolymer hydrogel is a useful carrier for transdermal drug delivery activated by an electric signal to provide on-demand release of rivastigmine.

The influence of ferric ions on photoinitiated reaction of dioxygen with two carbon organic acids, aldehydes and alcohols related to natural waters was demonstrated. Photocatalytic effect of ferric ions, i.e. photochemical reduction of Fe(III) as the catalyst generating step, has been found to be the common principal of these reactions. The overall quantum yields of the reactions are in the range from 0.3 to 1.2. A mathematical model designed for the mechanism of cyclic generation of catalyst in the singlet substrate oxidation by O2 was applied to the system glyoxalic acid + Fe(III); a fair agreement between the simulated and experimental kinetic curves was obtained. The experimental rate constant is 4.4 .10-4 s -1.

Gas chromatographic measurement of specific retention volumes of vapours of selected groups of organic compounds has been used to determine differential molar enthalpy of adsorption of their molecules on the surface of layered vanadyl phosphate substituted with ferric ions having the composition of [Fe(H2O)]0.20(VO)0.80PO4. Various types of bonds of the molecules to the surface of the layered adsorbent including their probable orientation with respect to the layers have been discussed. It was observed a dependence of the specific peak elution volume and shape of chromatographic peak on the sample size in the cases of those compounds whose molecules are chemically bound to the adsorbent surface. A connection is pointed out between the adsorption strength of the organic molecules on the layered adsorbent and the tendency of the system to undergo intercalation reaction.
