Abstract This paper presents some applications of summation equations with regard to the calculation prognosis of micro-bearing wear parameters. Summation equations are presented in a new form of difference and recurrence equations where the unknown micro-bearing wear function occurs as the argument of the reciprocal unified operator of summation (UOS). In this paper the properties of the UOS and reciprocal UOS as well as the unitary translation operator (UTO) are defined and applied to a micro-bearing wear determination. The approach of both dual and interaction between summation and recurrence equations and micro-bearing wear determination, makes this paper unique.

The degree of technical wear of old buildings, which are made of basic materials (cement, concrete, steel, timber, plaster, brick) using traditional technology, is expressed by the size and intensity of damage to their elements. The topic of the research concerns old residential buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which are located in the downtown district of Wroclaw, Poland. The descriptive analysis and the analysis of the definitions of defects that occur in the elements of residential buildings, which were performed as random analyzes, do not allow defects to be considered as measurable variables at a level of visual investigation. The major drawback of the method that is used by experts when assessing the technical condition of civil engineering buildings is that it does not numerically express the magnitude (strength) of the defects. Therefore, an attempt was made to numerically express the relationship (if such a relationship exists) between the occurred defects of buildings and the extent of their technical wear process. When calculating the strength of this relationship, the method of determining the point biserial correlation coefficient for the measurable property and the dichotomous property was used. It was found that the direction of the relation is right-hand for all the tested building elements, but the strength of the correlation between the detected defects and technical wear shows a considerable span and depends on the conditions of the apartment house’s maintenance. As a rule, damage caused by water penetration and moisture penetration always shows correlations of at least moderate strength.

Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools are widely used in industry due to their outstanding physical properties. However, the ultra-high hardness of PCD significantly limits the machining efficiency of conventional abrasive grinding processes, which are utilized to manufacture PCD tools. In contrast, electrical discharge grinding (EDG) has significantly higher machining efficiency because of its unique material removal mechanism. In this study, the quality and performance of PCD tools machined by abrasive grinding and EDG were investigated. The performance of cutting tools consisted of different PCD materials was tested by high-speed turning of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. Flank wear and crater wear were investigated by analyzing the worn profile, micro morphology, chemical decomposition, and cutting forces. The results showed that an adhesive-abrasive process dominated the processes of flank wear and crater wear. Tool material loss in the wear process was caused by the development of thermal cracks. The development of PCD tools’ wear made of small-sized diamond grains was a steady adhesion-abrasion process without any catastrophic damage. In contrast, a large-scale fracture happened in the wear process of PCD tools made of large-sized diamond grains. Adhesive wear was more severe on the PCD tools machined by EDG.

In manufacturing, cutting tools gradually wear out during the cutting process and decrease in cutting precision. A cutting tool has to be replaced if its degradation exceeds a certain threshold, which is determined by the required cutting precision. To effectively schedule production and maintenance actions, it is vital to model the wear process of cutting tools and predict their remaining useful life (RUL). However, it is difficult to determine the RUL of cutting tools with cutting precision as a failure criterion, as cutting precision is not directly measurable. This paper proposed a RUL prediction method for a cutting tool, developed based on a degradation model, with the roughness of the cutting surface as a failure criterion. The surface roughness was linked to the wearing process of a cutting tool through a random threshold, and accounts for the impact of the dynamic working environment and variable materials of working pieces. The wear process is modeled using a random-effects inverse Gaussian (IG) process. The degradation rate is assumed to be unit-specific, considering the dynamic wear mechanism and a heterogeneous population. To adaptively update the model parameters for online RUL prediction, an expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm has been developed. The proposed method is illustrated using an example study. The experiments were performed on specimens of 7109 aluminum alloy by milling in the normalized state. The results reveal that the proposed method effectively evaluates the RUL of cutting tools according to the specified surface roughness, therefore improving cutting quality and efficiency.

Abstract One of the principal objectives of modern production process is the improvement of quality level; this means also guaranteeing the required service life of different products and increase in their wear resistance. To perform this task, prediction of service life of fitted components is of crucial value, since with the development of production technologies and measuring devices it is possible to determine with ever increasing precision the data to be used also in analytical calculations. Having studied the prediction theories of wear process that have been developed in the course of time and can be classified into definite groups one can state that each of them has shortcomings that might strongly impair the results thus making unnecessary theoretical calculations. The proposed model for wear calculation is based on the application of theories from several branches of science to the description of 3D surface micro-topography, assessing the material’s physical and mechanical characteristics, substantiating the regularities in creation of the material particles separated during the wear process and taking into consideration definite service conditions of fittings.

A new wear model for piston ring and cylinder bore system has been developed to predict wear process with high accuracy and efficiency. It will save time and cost compared with experimental investigations. Surfaces of ring and bore were divided into small domains and assigned to corresponding elements in two-dimensional matrix. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Conjugate Gradient Method (CGM) were applied to obtain pressure distribution on the computing domain. The pressure and film thickness distribution were provided by a previously developed ring/bore lubrication module. By changing the wear coefficients of the ring and bore with accumulated cycles, wear was calculated point by point in the matrix. Ring and bore surface profiles were modified when wear occurred. The results of ring and bore wear after 1 cycle, 10 cycles and 2 hours at 3600 rpm were calculated. They coincided well with the general tendency of wear in a ring and bore system.

Having reviewed the literature on cutting and based on the optical, electron-optical and morphological examinations of wear processes we have reached the conclusion that it is possible to describe the abrasive, adhesive and thermally activated diffusion, oxidation processes in a single mathematical model. The model is a non-linear autonomous differential equation, which can be solved by simple numerical methods. The complex wear equation was validated by the results of the cutting tests performed with P20 carbide on C45 carbon steel. If we have this data, we can calculate the activation energy of the process determining the nature of the wear process. The apparent activation energy of wear is Q=151,7kJ/mol. The model can even be used with changing technological parameters, and the data necessary for the constants of the wear equation may as well be determined even by measurements performed on the tool during industrial manufacturing. By the mean of this data, we can calculate the activation energy determining the nature of the wear process.
