The structure and budget of turbulent kinetic energy in front of a wall-mounted cylinder

We investigate the flow and turbulence structure in front of a cylinder mounted on a flat plate by a combined study using highly resolved large-eddy simulation and particle image velocimetry. The Reynolds number based on the bulk velocity and cylinder diameter is $Re_{D}=39\,000$. As the cylinder is placed in an open channel, we take special care to simulate open-channel flow as the inflow condition, including secondary flows that match the inflow in the experiment. Due to the high numerical resolution, subgrid contributions to the Reynolds stresses are negligible and the modelled dissipation plays a minor role in major parts of the flow field. The accordance of the experimental and numerical results is good. The shear in the approach flow creates a vertical pressure gradient, inducing a downflow in the cylinder front. This downflow, when deflected in the upstream direction at the bottom plate, gives rise to a so-called horseshoe vortex system. The most upstream point of flow reversal at the wall is found to be a stagnation point which appears as a sink instead of a separation point in the symmetry plane in front of the cylinder. The wall shear stress is largest between the main (horseshoe) vortex and the cylinder, and seems to be mainly governed by the strong downflow in front of the cylinder as turbulent stresses are small in this region. Due to a strong acceleration along the streamlines, a region of relatively small turbulent kinetic energy is found between the horseshoe vortex and the cylinder. When passing under the horseshoe vortex, the upstream-directed jet formed by the deflected downflow undergoes a deceleration which gives rise to a strong production of turbulent kinetic energy. We find that pressure transport of turbulent kinetic energy is important for the initiation of the large production rates by increasing the turbulence level in the upstream jet near the wall. The distribution of the dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy is similar to that of the turbulent kinetic energy. Large values of dissipation occur around the centre of the horseshoe vortex and near the wall in the region where the jet decelerates. While the small scales are nearly isotropic in the horseshoe vortex centre, they are anistotropic near the wall. This can be explained by a vertical flapping of the upstream-directed jet. The distribution and level of dissipation, turbulent and pressure transport of turbulent kinetic energy are of crucial interest to turbulence modelling in the Reynolds-averaged context. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that these terms have been documented in this kind of flow.

Abstract We performed stereoscopic particle image velocimetry of the turbulent flow inside a scour hole around a cylinder in a sandy bed. At two planes, symmetry plane and $$45^\circ$$ 45 ∘ with respect to the approach flow, the flow and its turbulence structure were investigated. We used two Reynolds numbers (20, 000 and 39, 000) based on the cylinder diameter and the depth-averaged velocity in the symmetry plane. The flow is characterized by a strong down-flow in front of the cylinder, a large horseshoe vortex inside the scour, and an upstream directed wall jet underneath. The values of vorticity in the horseshoe vortex and of the velocity in the wall jet are larger than in a comparable configuration on a flat bed. Enhanced levels of turbulent kinetic energy are found around the horseshoe vortex and in the shear layer detaching from the rim. The orientation of the main axis of the velocity fluctuations changes when the flow enters the scour hole: from about wall-parallel in the detaching shear layer to vertical at the horseshoe vortex. The production of turbulent kinetic energy shows a maximum upstream of the horseshoe vortex centre with considerable production in the shear layer and in the wall jet underneath the horseshoe vortex. Furthermore, strong wall-parallel velocity fluctuations are visible in this region, and bimodal velocity distributions are found, but not anywhere else. The time-averaged wall-shear stresses are largest under the horseshoe vortex and most likely larger than in a corresponding flat-bed configuration. Graphic abstract

Low aspect ratio vanes, often the result of overall engine architecture constraints, create strong secondary flows and high endwall loss. In this paper, a splitter concept is demonstrated that reduces secondary flow strength and improves stage performance. An analytic conceptual study, corroborated by inviscid computations, shows that the total secondary kinetic energy of the secondary flow vortices is reduced when the number of passages is increased and, for a given number of vanes, when the inlet endwall boundary layer is evenly distributed between the passages. Viscous computations show that, for this to be achieved in a splitter configuration, the pressure-side leg of the low aspect ratio vane horseshoe vortex, must enter the adjacent passage (and not “jump” in front of the splitter leading edge). For a target turbine application, four vane designs were produced using a multi-objective optimization approach. These designs represent: current practice for a low aspect ratio vane; a design exempt from thickness constraints; and two designs incorporating splitter vanes. Each geometry is tested experimentally, as a sector, within a low-speed turbine stage. The vane designs with splitters geometries were found to reduce the measured secondary kinetic energy, by up to 85%, to a value similar to the design exempt from thickness constraints. The resulting flowfield was also more uniform in both the circumferential and radial directions. One splitter design was selected for a full annulus test where a mixed-out loss reduction, compared to the current practice design, of 15.3% was measured and the stage efficiency increased by 0.88%.

AbstractTwo new five-beam acoustic Doppler current profilers—the Nortek Signature1000 AD2CP and the Teledyne RDI Sentinel V50—are demonstrated to measure turbulence at two energetic tidal channels within Puget Sound, Washington. The quality of the raw data is tested by analyzing the turbulent kinetic energy frequency spectra, the turbulence spatial structure function, the shear in the profiles, and the covariance Reynolds stresses. The five-beam configuration allows for a direct estimation of the Reynolds stresses from along-beam velocity fluctuations. The Nortek’s low Doppler noise and high sampling frequency allow for the observation of the turbulent inertial subrange in both the frequency spectra and the turbulence structure function. The turbulence parameters obtained from the five-beam acoustic Doppler current profilers are validated with turbulence data from simultaneous measurements with acoustic Doppler velocimeters. These combined results are then used to assess a turbulent kinetic energy budget in which depth profiles of the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation and production rates are compared. The associated codes are publicly available on the MATLAB File Exchange website.

This paper reports numerical computations of fully rough turbulent boundary layers produced by first and second order Stokes waves. The computations are based on a mixing length turbulence closure and on a slightly more sophisticated turbulent kinetic energy closure. The first order results compare well with existing laboratory results. Reversal of the second order steady streaming under relatively long waves, which has been predicted analytically, is also predicted in the numerical results, The steady second order velocity field is found to become fully established only after a development time on the order of a few hundred wave periods. Both the first and second order results indicate that advection and diffusion of turbulent kinetic energy play a minor role in determining the Reynolds averaged velocity field.

The results of an experimental investigation on secondary flows in a linear cascade of turbine rotor blades are presented. To gain information on the turbulence related to the secondary flow development in turbine cascades, measurements have been carried out at eight normal sections in the passage and at a plane downstream of the trailing edge, using a constant temperature hot wire anemometer and a total pressure probe. A high level of turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent shear stresses has been found to be associated with the passage vortex. This result confirms that secondary loss generation in cascades is related to the production of turbulent kinetic energy in the vortex flow and to its viscous dissipation.

Laser-Doppler velocimeter measurements of mean velocities, turbulence intensities, and Reynolds stresses are presented for periodic fully developed flows in a channel with square rib-disturbed walls on two opposite sides. Quantities such as the vorticity thickness and turbulent kinetic energy are used to characterize the flow. The investigated flow was periodic in space. The Reynolds number based on the channel hydraulic diameter was 3.3×104. The ratios of pitch to rib-height and rib-height to chamber-height were 10 and 0.133, respectively. Regions where maximum and minimum Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy occurred were identified from the results. The growth rate of the shear layers of the present study was compared with that of a backward-facing step. The measured turbulence anisotropy and structure parameter distribution were used to examine the basic assumptions embedded in the k–ε and k–ε–A models. For a given axial station, the peak axial mean-velocity was found not to occur at the center point. The secondary flow was determined to be Prandtl’s secondary flow of the second kind according to the measured streamwise mean vorticity and its production term.

After validation with experimental data, large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to study in detail the open-channel flow through a curved flume. Based on the LES results, the present paper addresses four issues. Firstly, features of the complex bicellular pattern of the secondary flow, occurring in curved open-channel flows, and its origin are investigated. Secondly, the turbulence characteristics of the flow are studied in detail, incorporating the anisotropy of the turbulence stresses, as well as the distribution of the kinetic energy and the turbulent kinetic energy. Moreover, the implications of the pattern of the production of turbulent kinetic energy is discussed within this context. Thirdly, the distribution of the wall shear stresses at the bottom and sidewalls is computed. Fourthly, the effects of changes in the subgrid-scale model and the boundary conditions are investigated. It turns out that the counter-rotating secondary flow cell near the outer bank is a result of the complex interaction between the spatial distribution of turbulence stresses and centrifugal effects. Moreover, it is found that this outer bank cell forms a region of a local increase of turbulent kinetic energy and of its production. Furthermore, it is shown that the bed shear stresses are amplified in the bend. The distribution of the wall shear stresses is deformed throughout the bend due to curvature. Finally, it is shown that changes in the subgrid-scale model, as well as changes in the boundary conditions, have no strong effect on the results.

Turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and budget are indispensable hydraulic parameters to determine turbulent scales and processes resulting from various and different natural hydraulic features in open channels. This paper focuses on experimental investigation of turbulent kinetic energy and budget in a heterogeneous open channel flow with gravel and vegetated beds. Results indicate the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) value over gravel region of the heterogeneous bed remains approximately constant with flow depth. The highest turbulent kinetic energy was calculated for flexible vegetation arrangement compared to the rigid vegetation. The estimation of the turbulent kinetic energy budget shows the higher values of turbulence production recorded over the flexible vegetated bed, consequently, the dissipation rate exhibits faster decay of turbulence kinetic energy over the vegetated bed in comparison to the gravel bed.
