This empirical study introduces population targeting and cut-off point targeting as a systematic approach to evaluating the performance of items in the English section of university entrance examinations. Using Rasch measurement theory, we found that the item difficulty and the types of items in a series of national university entrance examinations varied considerably over a 4-year period. However, there was progress towards improved test performance in terms of an increased number of items assessing different language skills and content areas as well as an increased number targeting test takers’ knowledge of English. This study also found that productive items rather than receptive items better targeted test takers’ overall knowledge of English. Moreover, productive items were more consistently located around the probable cut point for university admissions. The paper concludes with a detailed account of a number of probable factors that could influence item performance, such as the use of rating scales. 本論文では、ある国立大学における大学入試の英語の問題の変化を実証的に検証したものである。テスト項目の結果を検証するための体系的なアプローチとして、「母集団を対象としたアプローチ」および「足きり点を対象としたアプローチ」という方法を導入した。ラッシュ・モデリングを用いて分析した結果、過去4年間の間に、項目の困難度および項目の型について、様々な技能を測定していること、内容も多様であること、英語の知識を検証している項目が増えたこと、などの点で大きく変化していることがわかった。さらに、産出能力の方が受容能力を測定する項目よりも入学者決定の際の足きり点の周辺に収束する傾向が見られた。項目ごとの成績に影響を及ぼす可能性のある多様な要因について詳細な検討を行った。

The interest in Serbian history, its language and culture have risen significantly in Ukraine in the last two decades. Ukrainian scientists begin to actively research Serbian history, compare Serbian traditions and customs with Ukrainian and study the influence that one nation has on another. Most of the studies, published in universities presented by Ukrainian philologists that study Serbian language and literature. However, historical works during the years of Ukrainian independence also diversified the limits of their searches. The main scientific research in Serbistics, gathered in works, such as “Comparative Research of Slavic Languages and Works of Literature”, “In memory of Academician Leonid Bulakhovsky”, “Herald of Taras Shevchenko National University”, “Actual Problems of National and World History”. Diversity and versatility of these journals, give scientists an opportunity to look into more actual, and less researched topics. Serbian studies in Ukraine, study such questions as the history of Serbian immigrants in Ukraine, Ukrainian diaspora in Serbia, cooperation of Ukrainians and Serbs during 17–21 centuries, modern tendencies of Serbian development. At the same time, there are more problems that require further development. That is why Serbian studies have a great perspective of development in Ukraine.

Abstract We investigated the long-term effects of birthplace favoritism by top-ranking politicians on the quality of education in Vietnam. We used over 1 million test scores from the 2009 and 2014 Vietnamese national university entrance examinations. We examined both the different timing of political terms and the total years of birthplace favoritism. Using the school fixed effects, we found that birthplace favoritism did not have any significant impacts, regardless of the timing and duration of such favoritism. We did not find evidence for such impacts in the distribution of test scores either. The results also suggest that national entrance examinations were unaffected by birthplace favoritism up to 2014.

In 1985, the National University of Mexico (UNAM) created a series of updating courses for high-school level teachers, both as an answer to an explicit demand of the teachers themselves, who asked for “fresh” information in their fields, and as an effort to improve the general level of undergraduate students, whose grades in the entrance examinations to the University had been secularly decreasing for years. To date, three “packages” of intensive 50-hour courses have been offered (during the three summer vacation periods) and Astronomy has been present in all of them. However, it should be mentioned that this presence was due only to the personal interest of the director of the project, since the subject “Astronomy” is not included in the official programs. In the following, we present a brief description of the courses and some interesting results.

An English version, a translation of the Kuwait University Anxiety Scale written originally in Arabic, was prepared. Several cycles of translation and back translation were carried out. Bilingual Arab college students, studying English language and literature ( N = 74) responded to the two versions of this scale in counterbalanced order. The correlation between the two forms was .96 denoting high cross-language equivalence. The nonsignificant mean difference for total scores between the two versions was an indication that they functioned as equivalent stimuli. Thus, the English version of the scale is highly recommended for use with English-speaking subjects.

Background: There had not been sufficient research on the problem of Ukrainian language and literature intensive course at preparatory departments targeted at the formation of the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, training strategies and reflection required for obtaining the assessment in the form of independent external evaluation. Particularly, the difficulties are posed by the problem of test preparation characterized by typicality, validity, differential ability and objective evaluation. Purpose. The purpose of this paper was to clarify and specify the aim and the tasks of the discipline "Ukrainian language and literature", which is taught to students of preparatory for independent external evaluation university departments, to specify the requirements for students' knowledge, skills and abilities, to develop and present a sample test case for independent external evaluation test on Ukrainian language and literature. Results. The goals and objectives of the discipline "Ukrainian language and literature", which is taught to students of preparatory for independent external evaluation university departments, are identified, the requirements for students’ knowledge, skills and abilities are outlined, a sample test case for independent external evaluation test on Ukrainian language and literature is presented, it corresponds to the training goals, involves selective responses and construction, has differentiated ability and validity. The test has been tried out on more than 1000 people, students of the preparatory department of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Discussion The defined goals and tasks of the discipline "Ukrainian language and literature" require a clear educational planning organization and building an effective model.

In institutions across the world, translation training is accorded sacrosanct status in translation studies. Recent developments in translation and technology, combined with the increasingly prominent role of translation in the global marketplace, have given the discipline a renewed significance both academically and culturally. In Palestine, however, translator training has for many years subsisted on limited resources, despite the fact that translation, in most Palestinian universities English departments, has been a requisite course in English language and literature degrees at undergraduate level for the past four decades. Drawing on first-hand experience from teaching undergraduate translation courses at Al-Quds University and An-Najah National University, what this article attempts to investigate, then, is the status of translation teaching at the undergraduate level at English departments in Palestinian universities. To that effect, the paper uses a selective body of authentic translation examples and outlines some important issues which are indispensable to undergraduate translation teaching. The study offers advice and guidelines to university professors and instructors who do not have degrees and/or training in translation and find themselves obliged to teach undergraduate translation courses at their respective English departments.
