AbstractThe Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, vectors Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (Las) and Candidatus Liberibacter americanus (Lam), the presumed causal agents of huanglongbing. D. citri generally rely on olfaction and vision for detection of host cues. Plant volatiles from Allium spp. (Alliaceae) are known to repel several arthropod species. We examined the effect of garlic chive (A. tuberosum Rottl.) and wild onion (A. canadense L.) volatiles on D. citri behaviour in a two-port divided T-olfactometer. Citrus leaf volatiles attracted significantly more D. citri adults than clean air. Volatiles from crushed garlic chive leaves, garlic chive essential oil, garlic chive plants, wild onion plants and crushed wild onion leaves all repelled D. citri adults when compared with clean air, with the first two being significantly more repellent than the others. However, when tested with citrus volatiles, only crushed garlic chive leaves and garlic chive essential oil were repellent, and crushed wild onions leaves were not.Analysis of the headspace components of crushed garlic chive leaves and garlic chive essential oil by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that monosulfides, disulfides and trisulfides were the primary sulfur volatiles present. In general, trisulfides (dimethyl trisulfide) inhibited the response of D. citri to citrus volatiles more than disulfides (dimethyl disulfide, allyl methyl disulfide, allyl disulfide). Monosulfides did not affect the behaviour of D. citri adults. A blend of dimethyl trisulfide and dimethyl disulfide in 1:1 ratio showed an additive effect on inhibition of D. citri response to citrus volatiles. The plant volatiles from Allium spp. did not affect the behaviour of the D. citri ecto-parasitoid Tamarixia radiata (Waterston). Thus, Allium spp. or the tri- and di-sulphides could be integrated into management programmes for D. citri without affecting natural enemies.

The volatile flavor compounds of Huizhou preserved vegetable were extracted by hydrodistillation (HD) and simultaneous distillation-extraction (SDE). The essential oils obtained were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, accompanying by comparison of the retention time of authentic samples and by calculation of retention index about the separated constituents. 50 volatile flavor compounds were identified in the essential oils of Huizhou preserved vegetable obtained by HD and SDE in all. 41 compounds were identified in the essential oil from HD and 36 compounds identified in the essential oil from SDE. The constituents which are very important to the odor of Huizhou preserved vegetable include 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, dimethyl disulfide, hexanal, furfural, 2-furanmethanol, 2-methylbutanoic acid, benzeneacetaldehyde, phenylethyl alcohol, 5-ethyldihydro-2(3H)-furanone, 5-pentyl-dihydro-2(3H)-furanone, etc. The exclusive compounds in the essential oil gained by HD consist of hexanol, heptanol, 1-(2-furanyl)-ethanone, 5-methyl-dihydro-2(3H)-furanone, benzaldehyde, phenol, benzyl alcohol, methyl benzoate, ethyl benzoate. The exclusive compounds obtained by SDE are 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, dimethyl trisulfide,trans-2-(2-pentenyl)-furan, camphor, vanillin, etc. The differences result in the two essential oils with a few distinctions on aroma characteristics.

Medicinal plants are considered modern resources for producing agents that could act as alternatives to antibiotics in demeanor of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The aim of the study was to evaluate the chemical composition and antibacterial activities of essential oil of Foeniculum vulgare (FV) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry was done to specify chemical composion. As a screen test to detect antibacterial properties of the essential oil, agar disk and agar well diffusion methods were employed. Macrobroth tube test was performed to determinate MIC. The results indicated that the most substance found in FV essential oil was Trans-anethole (47.41 %), also the essential oil of FV with 0.007 g/ml concentration has prevented P. aeruginosa and with 0.002 g/ml concentration has prevented B. subtilis from the growth. Thus, the research represents the antibacterial effects of the medical herb on test P. aeruginosa and B. subtilis. We believe that the article provide support to the antibacterial properties of the essential oil. The results indicate the fact that the essential oil from the plant can be useful as medicinal or preservatives composition.

The article presents results of the study of a comparative analysis of essential oil obtained from fresh and dried leaves of medicinal sage (Salvia officinalis L.), growing in the Botanical Garden of the First Moscow State Medical University named after Sechenov. The studies were carried out using gas chromatography– mass spectrometry. Qualitative and quantitative difference in the component composition of the essential oil obtained from fresh and dried raw materials was determined as a result of the study.

The U.S. Clean Air Act bans the use of methyl bromide after 2001. Consequently, the development of alternative methods for control of soilborne pathogens is imperative. One alternative is to exploit the pesticidal properties of macerated tissues of Brassica spp. This study tested the potential of several Brassica spp. for control of fungal pathogens. Pythium ultimum Trow or Rhizoctonia solani Kühn plugs on potato-dextrose agar on petri dishes were sealed in 500-ml glass jars (at 22 °C) containing macerated leaves (10 g) from one of six Brassica spp. Radial growth was measured 24, 48, and 72 h after inoculation. Indian mustard (B. juncea) was the most suppressive, followed by `Florida Broadleaf' mustard (B. juncea). Volatile compounds in the jars were sampled with a solid-phase microextraction device (SPME) and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) comprised over 90% of the total volatiles measured from Indian mustard and `Florida Broadleaf' mustard. Isothiocyanates were detected in jars with all plants except broccoli. (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate was emitted by all plants and was the predominant volatile of `Premium Crop' broccoli (B. oleracea L. var. italica), `Michihili Jade Pagoda' Chinese cabbage (B. pekinensis), `Charmant' cabbage (B. oleracea L. var. capitata), and `Blue Scotch Curled' kale (B. oleracea L. var. viridis). To assess the influence of AITC on radial growth of P. ultimum and R. solani, AITC was added to jars to give headspace concentrations of 0.10, 0.20, and 0.30 mg·L–1 (mass of AITC per volume of headspace). Growth of both fungi was inhibited by 0.10 mg·L–1 AITC. 0.20 mg·L–1 AITC was fungicidal to P. ultimum although the highest AITC level tested (0.30 mg·L–1) did not terminate R. solani growth. These results indicate that residues from some Brassica spp. may be a viable part of a soilborne pest control strategy.
