Case studies of municipal elections hold little appeal for students of local government. Recent scholarship for the most part has focused on gender or the election of councillors, but studies of mayoral contests are virtually non–existent. This is somewhat surprising, considering the constituent size of several large Canadian municipalities where local government leaders are directly elected. If indeed local government is the level closest to the people, a study of municipal electoral behaviour in large cities can provide insights about the relationship between local politicians and the electorate.

Abstract Populist radical right (PRR) parties have increasingly occupied positions of power in recent years, inspiring much scholarly interest in the mainstreaming consequences of government responsibility. This article analyses the extent and manner of mainstreaming of the Rassemblement National (RN) while in power at the local level of government in France. A municipal-level focus enables the novel inclusion of the party into the debate about the consequences of government participation for the PRR. We conduct a paired case study analysis of RN-led Hénin-Beaumont, the political base of Marine Le Pen and her ‘de-demonization’ strategy, alongside nearby Lens, which is led by a mainstream party. We analyse the policy and discourse of the administration through a qualitative content analysis of mayoral statements and data from semi-structured interviews with local politicians. The results show a partial mainstreaming due to the strategic exercise of local government power to present a more moderate and capable image, as well as the use of populist discourse to frame mainstream opposition forces and the local press as working against the interests of ‘the people’.

AbstractThis article examines voting trends in recent Ontario elections and the impact of incumbency, gender, campaign expenditures and the number of candidates per seat on the electoral success of a candidate. Voter turnout is found to be consistently lower in larger cities. The number of females holding office has increased over time, with large cities having the highest proportion of females in office. As candidates, males and females have similar success rates. Incumbency provides a huge advantage, especially in large cities. The level of campaign spending also has a significant effect as does the number of candidates contesting a seat.

The 2019 municipal elections in Florence confirm the electoral success of the Democratic Party and the Mayor, Dario Nardella. The center-right candidate, Ubaldo Bocci, an entrepreneur and member of local catholic associations, collected 25% of the votes. The Five Star Movement, with Roberto De Blasi as mayoral candidate, and the left candidate Antonella Bundu got about 7% of the electoral preferences each.In which areas of the city did the PD win? Is it possible establish a causal relation between voting behaviour, the neighbourhood and sociodemographic variables? To answer these questions, the article examines the electoral results through a geographical approach, based on the 72 «elementary areas» of Florence and other variables provided by ISTAT. This analysis identifies four macro-areas, distinguished for the different combinations of the presence of the political parties. Overall, the preferences collected by the PD, more than 50%, make difficult to found a link between the vote and the social background.In order to understand the electoral success of the PD and of local politicians other factors, like political culture or specific contextual features, have to be taken into consideration. Indeed, from a qualitative perspective, this contribution suggests to consider Florence as a «urban regime», composed by several actors who share interests and visions about the growth of the city.

While municipal elections in Quebec are characterized by low voter turnout, it appears that people over 65 years old are the ones who vote in higher numbers. In fact, this is the case for both federal and provincial elections. However, the lack of individual data on municipal elections does not yet allow us to say that seniors vote more than younger people. This finding invites political scientists to look at the electoral behaviour of individual voters and the importance attached to the act of voting at this level of government. In addition, the majority of studies on elections focus on the behaviours of voters living in large cities such as Montreal or Quebec City. In Quebec, the few studies that have looked at medium size municipality voting behaviour have mainly studied the cities of Quebec City, but not Montreal. Based on 19 interviews conducted with people aged between 65 and 84 and living in one medium size cities, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, our research illustrates the importance of the exercise of a duty, the access to political information, the proximity of electoral behaviour and the influential role of seniors. According to participants, it is easier to talk to municipal candidates and get to know the person who will become their official representative, compared to the provincial and federal levels where it is more difficult to talk to candidates. Also, their knowledge of the municipal political system is better than when they were younger. While voting is similarly important at each level of government, participants felt that voting at the municipal level is directly relevant to them because of the municipal services but also by the influence they can have on their councillor.


Significance The news comes on the heels of the July 22 election which means that for the first time since 1991, the Verkhovna Rada (parliament).will be controlled by one party without the need to form a coalition. Zelensky's Servant of the People will take 254 votes, giving it an absolute majority. Impacts The election has been generally acknowledged as free and fair -- an achievement for any post-Soviet state. The Zelensky administration's electoral success will prompt it to hold early municipal elections, initially to oust Kyiv's mayor. Servant of the People may grow so unwieldy as to become ungovernable and may eventually disintegrate.

The study's objective is to examine the relationship between Justice, Development and Peace/Caritas Advocates (JDPCA) activities and the Wellbeing of Ikot Ene people during COVID-19 Lockdown. Specifically, the study examines the relationship between JDPCA’s provision of palliatives, healthcare programmes, and the Wellbeing of Ikot Ene people during COVID-19 Lockdown. Two research questions and null hypotheses were raised for the study. Literature was reviewed according to the variables of the study. The survey research design was adopted in collecting data from 176 samples from a population of 725 beneficiaries of the JDPCA programme from Ikot Ene in Akpabuyo Local government Area of Cross River state. The instrument of data collection was the question. Data collected from the field was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result revealed a correlation between JDPCA’s provision of palliatives; healthcare programmes had a significant impact on the Wellbeing of the people of Ikot Ene. During COVID-19 Lockdown. Based on the study's findings, the study recommends a need for the Justice, Development and Peace/Caritas Advocates (JDPCA) to improve their coverage area and the number of beneficiaries for their future programmes.

The relationship between government and village authority can be viewed from the perspective of the relationship between the government and the village. It can also be seen from the relationship in authority to run preprint abstract: the wheels of government in the region based on the aspirations of the people. These relationships have four important dimensions to be observed, including institutional, financial, supervisory and authority relationships. Efforts are made in overcoming the problems that arise in the implementation of authority relations between the central and regional governments. The usefulness of research in theory is to be able to enrich science in the implementation of government and local performance, made the beginning material in other studies that discuss issues related to the relationship of government and regional authority and increase the main scientific insights related to local government law.

A proposta deste artigo é refletir sobre os espaços ocupados pelas candidaturas transexuais nas últimas eleições municipais de 2020, no Brasil, correlacionando folkcomunicação, representação política e minorias. Apesar do êxito eleitoral de uma parcela ainda pequena desse segmento em todo o país, com destaque maior nas grandes metrópoles, os (as) transexuais reforçam suas políticas de gênero e abrem novos campos de disputas políticas, como nunca vistos na sociedade brasileira. Nessa perspectiva, o trabalho aponta como a visibilidade midiática potencializa as políticas de comunicação afirmativas da identidade transexual, o que vem possibilitando leituras plurais da sociedade, abrindo novos espaços e democratizando a representação política. The purpose of this article is to reflect on the spaces occupied by transsexual candidates in the last municipal elections of 2020, in Brazil, correlating folk communication, political representation and minorities. Despite the electoral success of a still small portion of this segment across the country, with greater prominence in large cities, transsexuals reinforce their gender policies and open up new fields of political disputes, as never before seen in Brazilian society. In this perspective, the work points out how media visibility enhances affirmative communication policies for transsexual identity, which have enabled plural readings of society, opening new spaces and democratizing political representation. El propósito de este artículo es reflexionar sobre los espacios ocupados por los candidatos transexuales en las últimas elecciones municipales de 2020, en Brasil, correlacionando folkcomunicación, representación política y minorías. According to Abdulaziz Sachedina, the main argument of religious pluralism in the Qur’an based on the relationship between private belief (personal) and public projection of Islam in society. By regarding to private faith, the Qur’an being noninterventionist (for example, all forms of human authority should not be disturb the inner beliefs of individuals). While the public projection of faith, the Qur’an attitude based on the principle of coexistence. There is the willingness of the dominant race provide the freedom for people of other faiths with their own rules. Rules could shape how to run their affairs and to live side by side with the Muslims. Thus, based on the principle that the people of Indonesia are Muslim majority, it should be a mirror of a societie’s recognizion, respects and execution of religious pluralism. Abdul Aziz Sachedina called for Muslims to rediscover the moral concerns of public Islam in peace. The call for peace seemed to indicate that the existence of increasingly weakened in the religious sense of the Muslims and hence need to be reaffi rmed. Sachedina also like to emphasize that the position of peace in Islam is parallel with a variety of other doctrines, such as: prayer, fasting, pilgrimage and so on. Sachedina also tried to show the argument that the common view among religious groups is only one religion and traditions of other false and worthless. “Antipluralist” argument comes amid the reality of human religious differences.
