Echinoidea and Holothuroidea (Echinodermata) of the Trindade and Martin Vaz Archipelago, off Brazil, with new records and remarks on taxonomy and species composition

The degree of isolation of oceanic islands makes these environments an excellent model for evolutionary studies. Proper knowledge of the species composition of oceanic islands, however, is required to better understand evolutionary processes (e.g. speciation events). A 3-year survey in the shallow waters (up to 30 m) of the Trindade and Martin Vaz oceanic insular complex, and a literature review on the data published for these islands and for Fernando de Noronha and São Pedro and São Paulo oceanic archipelagos have been conducted to document the biodiversity of echinoids and holothuroids from these isolated Brazilian oceanic islands. Sixteen species were collected and characterized morphologically, including two first records for the South Atlantic and one for Brazil. Comparison with conspecific specimens from the Brazilian coast and congeners was also done. Species richness increased from six to 18; the richness in Trindade Island being the highest among the South Atlantic oceanic islands. However, these islands remain undersampled beyond 30-m depth. Endemism was very low, suggesting the potential role of oceanic currents and seamounts as stepping-stones in transoceanic dispersal of species to remote islands. The Brazilian oceanic islands are impoverished oceanic outposts of the Brazilian Province; nevertheless, endemic species and intraspecific morphological variations compared with the mainland suggest they may also be regions of speciation. Documenting their biodiversity is critical for effective management and conservation of their marine ecosystems.

Albatrosses and sea turtles are known to perform extremely long-distance journeys between disparate feeding areas and breeding sites located on small, isolated, oceanic islands or at specific coastal sites. These oceanic journeys, performed mainly over or through apparently featureless mediums, indicate impressive navigational abilities, and the sensory mechanisms used are still largely unknown. This research used three different approaches to investigate whether bi-coordinate navigation based on magnetic field gradients is likely to explain the navigational performance of wandering albatrosses in the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans and of green turtles breeding on Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. The possibility that magnetic field parameters can potentially be used in a bi-coordinate magnetic map by wandering albatrosses in their foraging area was investigated by analysing satellite telemetry data published in the literature. The possibilities for using bi-coordinate magnetic navigation varied widely between different areas of the Southern Oceans, indicating that a common mechanism, based on a bi-coordinate geomagnetic map alone, was unlikely for navigation in these areas. In the second approach, satellite telemetry was used to investigate whether Ascension Island green turtles use magnetic information for navigation during migration from their breeding island to foraging areas in Brazilian coastal waters. Disturbing magnets were applied to the heads and carapaces of the turtles, but these appeared to have little effect on their ability to navigate. The only possible effect observed was that some of the turtles with magnets attached were heading for foraging areas slightly south of the control turtles along the Brazilian coast. In the third approach, breeding female green turtles were deliberately displaced in the waters around Ascension Island to investigate which cues these turtles might use to locate and return to the island; the results suggested that cues transported by wind might be involved in the final stages of navigation.

ABSTRACT Herein we report the first recorded arrival of Aedes aegypti on Trindade Island, approximately 1,140 km from the Brazilian coast, posing potential health risks to the human inhabitants thereof. The collection of mosquitoes was done from August to October 2019 via an active search for adults, eggs, and larvae by surveying objects with accumulated water and implantation of 23 ovitraps in different regions of the island. As a result, we collected 33 adults of Ae. aegypti via active search inside buildings. A total of 433 eggs of Ae. aegypti were also obtained from the ovitraps, all of which subsequently reached the adult stage. No other species of Culicidae was found.

ABSTRACT. The standard REMO (a Brazilian approach towards operational oceanography) model configuration is tested, and results of two numerical simulations with HYCOM are presented and discussed. This configuration consists basically of a high-resolution eddy-resolving, 1/12 degree model for the Metarea V (latitudes from 7◦N to 35◦50’S, and longitudes between 20◦W and the Brazilian coast), nested in a medium-resolution eddy-permitting, 1/4 degree model of the Atlantic Ocean. These simulations aim for: a) creating a basic set-up for implementation of assimilation techniques leading to ocean prediction; b) the development of hydrodynamic bases for environmental studies; and c) providing boundary conditions for regional domains with increased resolution. This is the first time HYCOM is applied in high-resolution and particularly tailored for this region of the ocean. The 1/4 degree simulation was able to simulate realistic Equatorial and South Atlantic large scale circulation, both the wind-driven and the thermohaline components. The high-resolution introduces realistic mesoscale activity, in particular that associated with the dynamics of western boundary currents, and captures also both the continental shelf and the upper-ocean modes of variability associated with atmospheric synoptic forcing. Important issues for the simulation of the South Atlantic with high-resolution are discussed, like the ideal place for boundaries, improvements in the bathymetric representation, and the control of SST bias by the introduction of surface relaxation. In order to make a preliminary assessment of the model behavior when submitted to data assimilation, the Cooper & Haines (1996) method was used to extrapolate SSH anomalies fields to deeper layers every 7 days, with encouraging results.Keywords: numerical simulation, nesting, southwest Atlantic, Brazil Current. RESUMO. Neste trabalho são apresentados e discutidos resultados de duas simulações numéricas realizadas com o model HYCOM e que representam a configuração padrão do projeto REMO (Rede de Modelagem e Observação Oceanográfica), uma abordagem brasileira para a oceanografia operacional. Esta configuração consiste em um modelo em alta resolução (1/12 de grau, que resolve a mesoescala) da região denominada de Metarea V (latitudes de 7◦N a 35◦50’S e longitudes desde 20◦W até a costa brasileira), aninhado em um modelo em média-resolução (1/4 de grau, que resolve apenas parcialmente a mesoescala) do oceano Atlântico. Estas simulações tem como objetivos: a) a geração de um set-up básico para implementação de técnicas de assimilação visando a previsão oceânica; b) o desenvolvimento de bases hidrodinâmicas para estudos ambientais; e c) a geração de condições de contorno para domínios regionais com maior resolução. Esta é a primeira vez que o HYCOM é aplicado em alta resolução e especialmente configurado para esta região do oceano. A simulação em 1/4 de grau simulou de forma realista a circulação de larga escala no Atlântico Sul e Equatorial, tanto a componente eólica quanto a termohalina. A simulação em alta resolução foi capaz de introduzir também de forma realista a mesoescala, em particular aquela associada à dinâmica das correntes de contorno oeste, e de capturar a variabilidade da porção superior do oceano e da plataforma continental associada à forçante atmosférica em escala sinótica. Aspectos importantes para a simulação do Atlântico Sul em alta resolução são discutidos, como o posicionamento dos contornos, a representação da batimetria e o controle de possíveis tendências na TSM pela introdução de um termo de relaxamento para climatologia em superfície. Uma avaliação preliminar do comportamento do modelo submetido à assimilação de dados foi realizada com o método de Cooper & Haines (1996), capaz de extrapolar campos de anomalias de elevação da superfície para camadas mais profundas a cada 7 dias, com resultados promissores.Palavras-chave: simulação numérica, aninhamento, Atlântico sudoeste, Corrente do Brasil.

The Trindade and Martin Vaz (TMV) volcanic archipelago is highly isolated, being located some 1200 km off the Brazilian coast and about 4200 km away from the nearest African coast. The only axiidean known from the archipelago is Coralaxius nodulosus (Meinert, 1877), a species extensively reported in the western Atlantic. From 2012 to 2018, 263 SCUBA diving and intertidal samplings were conducted at TMV and yielded 46 axiidean specimens in three species, one of which is a new species: Corallianassa longiventris (A. Milne-Edwards, 1870), Neocallichirus grandimana (Gibbes, 1850), and Fragillianassa joeli sp. nov., a species closely related to F. fragilis (Biffar, 1970). Hitherto unreported specimens from along the Vitória-Trindade Seamounts Chain (VTSC) and the Abrolhos Bank were also included in this report, namely C. nodulosus and Michelea vandoverae (Gore, 1987). The occurrence of M. vandoverae at the Abrolhos Bank extends its range into the southwestern Atlantic. Coralaxius abelei Kensley & Gore, 1981 is herein considered a junior synonym of Coralaxius nodulosus (Meinert, 1877). Meinertaxius Sakai, 2011, therefore becomes a subjective synonym of Coralaxius Kensley & Gore, 1981. Axiideans from the tropical southern-central Atlantic oceanic islands (Ascension, Fernando de Noronha, Rocas Atoll, Saint Helena, Trindade and Martin Vaz) are listed with their gross distribution in the Atlantic Ocean revealing a strongly depauperate axiidean insular fauna, totaling six species. Except for Axiopsis serratifrons (A. Milne-Edwards, 1873), a pantropical species, the insular southwestern-central Atlantic axiideans are entirely of western Atlantic affinities, with F. joeli sp. nov. being the only endemic so far.

<p>This work aims to assess the future projected changes in the cyclones originated in the South Atlantic, focusing on their genesis and intensifying mechanisms. The TRACK program was used to identify and track cyclones based on the relative vorticity from winds at 850 hPa. Spatial distribution maps of the atmospheric environment at the time of genesis were built using information sampled from individual features, e.g., mean upper-level jet speed, low-level moisture transport. First, we evaluated the HadGEM2-ES ability to reproduce the main characteristics of the South Atlantic cyclones and access their future projected changes using the RCP8.5 scenario. Then, we performed a dynamical downscaling using the WRF model to improve the resolution of the climate model in the historical (ExpHad-HIST) and RCP8.5 (ExpHad-RCP85) scenarios. Our results showed that HadGEM2-ES were able to reproduce the South Atlantic storm track pattern and its four main cyclogenesis regions: (1) Southern Brazilian coast (SE-BR, 30ºS); (2) Northern Argentina, Uruguay, and Southern Brazil (LA PLATA, 35ºS); (3) central coast of Argentina (ARG, 40ºS-55º) and; (4) Southeastern South Atlantic (SE-SAO, 55ºS and 10ºW). However, HadGEM-ES presented less intense cyclones and a negative density bias on the subtropical storm track, as a consequence of an underestimated genesis in the LA PLATA and SE-BR regions. The ExpHad-HIST provided a better representation of these two genesis regions, where the effects of an improved orography, mesoscale processes and strong and more organized low-level jet seem to reduce the static stability and support cyclone development. HadGEM2-ES RCP8.5 future projection showed a decrease of 10% in the number of cyclones over South Atlantic and a poleward shift of the main storm track, linked to the larger reduction of systems in mid than high latitudes. This increase in the cyclone activity at 30ºS led to the high track density in the South Atlantic subtropical storm track, both in the summer and winter. The ExpHad-RCP85 also showed a poleward shift of the main storm track, but mainly in the summer. The reduction and southward displacement of the cyclone occurrences can be addressed to the increase in the static stability at mid-latitudes. However, the increase in the moisture content at low levels seems to balance the effect of the static stability as long as there is an increase in the genesis in the equatorward genesis regions. In fact, the ExpHad-RCP85 simulated growth in the genesis in the northern edge of SE-BR (20ºS, 50ºW) and ARG (45ºS) regions, in the summer, and the LA PLATA region in the winter - being the last change also observed in HadGEM2-ES RCP8.5. The large increase in the low-level moisture and a strengthening of the equatorward flank of the upper-level jet could justify more genesis at these locations, competing with the increase in static stability. Moreover, the large content of low-level moisture available in the future simulation may also be connected to the observed intensification of the cyclones over the Uruguayan and Brazilian coast.</p>

The nudibranch Flabellina dana Millen and Hamann, 2006 is reported from two localities in the northeastern Brazilian coast. These are the first records of this species, previously recorded from localities in the Bahamas and the Caribbean Sea, in South Atlantic Ocean, extending its known geographic distribution more than 3500 km southward.

The analysis of published and unpublished 368 K/Ar radiometric ages of basic, intermediate and alkaline volcanic rocks, related to the post-Paleozoic magmatism linked to the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean, yields some important evidence concerning the break up of the Gondwana supercontinent. At the Brazilian Equatorial margin, the Gondwana break up started in the Permo-Triassic, when the opening of the Equatorial South Atlantic Ocean began and spread out south-eastward up to the present day Amazon River mouth. During the middle Jurassic/lower Cretaceous (pre-Aptian), the continuity of this separation, towards the Potiguar Basin, was coeval with the northward opening of the south-east Brazilian margin, up to the Espírito Santo State latitude. The relationship between large volcanic events in the basins and the resistance to the rifting process development offered by the cratonic area was shown by the trend of the magmatic age. Along the equatorial margin, the fragmentation resistance caused by the São Luis / West African craton is manifested by a large basic magmatism described in the Tacutu, Acre, Solimões, Amazonas and Parnaíba basins. A similar mechanism along the south-east margin, is proposed for the magmatism described in the Paraná Basin which is associated with the fracturing resistance offered by the São Francisco/Congo cratonic area. The integration of geochronological, micropalentological, sedimentological and geochemical data from the basins of the east Brazilian continental margin supports a model to explain the final disruption between South America and Africa during Cenonian/Turonian time. This model implies that 90 Ma basic magmatic rocks, related to the oceanic crust formation, probably occur offshore from the present-day eastern Brazilian coast line.

Ophioscolex glacialis Müller and Troschel, 1840 (Ophiuroidea: Ophiomyxidae) was registered for first time off the Brazilian coast, from the Campos Basin of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The specimen was sampled during a environmental monitoring.
