AbstractHe report the first results from a program to monitor the stars in the Carney and Latham (1985) halo survey for velocity variations due to orbital motion. From the sample of 300 stars with high space velocities, 24 spectroscopie binaries candidates have been identified. The Halo Survey of Carney and Latham (1985) has identified approximately 300 stars with space velocities greater than 200 km sec−l compared to the local standard of rest. The radial velocities of these stars have been monitored for typically two years, and at least 24 show evidence of possible variation. These stars are listed in Table I, which gives the star name, the number of observations, the number of days between the first and last observations, the mean velocity, the RMS, the U, V, and W velocities, and the speed compared to the galactic rest frame. The error of a single measurement is perhaps ± 0.7 km sec−1, but depends to some extent on the metallicity and the quality of the spectrum. For a star to be included in Table I as a binary candidates we have chosen a threshold of ± 2.0 km sec−1 for the RMS, or approximately 3 sigma. We plan to monitor the radial velocities of these binary candidates closely over the next few years. We also plan to obtain b-y and V-K colors to search for the light of possible companions.

Abstract Background The prevalence of chronotropic incompetence (CI) in heart failure (HF) population is high and negatively impacts prognosis. In HF patients with an implanted cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) device and severe CI, the effect of rate adaptive pacing on patient outcomes is unclear. Closed loop stimulation (CLS) based on cardiac impedance measurement may be an optimal method of heart rate adaptation according to metabolic need in HF patients with severe CI. Purpose This is the first study evaluating the effect of CLS on the established prognostic parameters assessed by the cardio-pulmonary exercise (CPX) testing and on quality of life (QoL) of the patients. Methods A randomised, controlled, double-blind and crossover pilot study has been performed in CRT patients with severe CI defined as the inability to achieve 70% of the age-predicted maximum heart rate (APMHR). After baseline assessment, patients were randomised to either DDD-CLS pacing (group 1) or DDD pacing at 40 bpm (group 2) for a 1-month period, followed by crossover for another month. At baseline and at 1- and 2-month follow-ups, a CPX was performed and QoL was assessed using the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire. The main endpoints were the effect of CLS on ventilatory efficiency (VE) slope (evaluated by an independent CPX expert), the responder rate defined as an improvement (decrease) of the VE slope by at least 5%, percentage of maximal predicted heart rate reserve (HRR) achieved, and QoL. Results Of the 36 patients enrolled in the study, 20 fulfilled the criterion for severe CI and entered the study follow-up (mean age 68.9±7.4 years, 70% men, LVEF=41.8±9.3%, 40%/60% NYHA class II/III). Full baseline and follow-up datasets were obtained in 17 patients. The mean VE slope and HRR at baseline were 34.4±4.4 and 49.6±23.8%, respectively, in group 1 (n=7) and 34.5±12.2 and 54.2±16.1% in group 2 (n=10). After completing the 2-month CPX, the mean difference between DDD-CLS and DDD-40 modes was −2.4±8.3 (group 1) and −1.2±3.5 (group 2) for VE slope, and 17.1±15.5% (group 1) and 8.7±18.8% (group 2) for HRR. Altogether, VE slope improved by −1.8±2.95 (p=0.31) in DDD-CLS versus DDD-40, and HRR improved by 12.9±8.8% (p=0.01). The VE slope decreased by ≥5% in 47% of patients (“responders to CLS”). The mean difference in the QoL between DDD-CLS and DDD-40 was 0.16±0.25 in group 1 and −0.01±0.05 in group 2, resulting in an overall increase by 0.08±0.08 in the DDD-CLS mode (p=0.13). Conclusion First results of the evaluation of the effectiveness of CLS in CRT patients with severe CI revealed that CLS generated an overall positive effect on well-established surrogate parameters for prognosis. About one half of the patients showed CLS response in terms of improved VE slope. In addition, CLS improved quality of life. Further clinical research is needed to identify predictors that can increase the responder rate and to confirm improvement in clinical outcomes. We present preliminary results on a spectal analysis of quasars observed by the X-ray observatory Ginga. Simple power-law models with fixed Galactic absorbtion provide an adequate description of the spectra for most of the sources in the 2–18 keV band. A small number of sources show evidence for a feature at 6.4 keV (in the source rest frame) due to Fe line emission. Maximum likelihood and Spearman rank tests were used to investigate the relationship between radio loudness and X-ray spectral index in this class of object. These tests showed, respectively, that the mean X-ray spectral index of radio quiet quasars (RQQs) is significantly different from that of flat spectrum radio loud quasars (FRSQs) at the >99% level, and that the dominant relationship with spectral index is radio loudness (not X-ray luminosity or redshift) at >99% significance. This last result has not previously been demonstrated in this band, but agrees with findings in the lower energy Einstein band (0.5–3.5 keV). These results are discussed in the context of current unified models.

We present three transit observations of HD 189733 b obtained with the high-resolution spectrograph CARMENES at Calar Alto. A strong absorption signal is detected in the near-infrared He I triplet at 10830 Å in all three transits. During mid-transit, the mean absorption level is 0.88 ± 0.04% measured in a ±10 km s−1 range at a net blueshift of − 3.5 ± 0.4 km s−1 (10829.84–10830.57 Å). The absorption signal exhibits radial velocities of + 6.5 ± 3.1 km s−1 and − 12.6 ± 1.0 km s−1 during ingress and egress, respectively; all radial velocities are measured in the planetary rest frame. We show that stellar activity related pseudo-signals interfere with the planetary atmospheric absorption signal. They could contribute as much as 80% of the observed signal and might also affect the observed radial velocity signature, but pseudo-signals are very unlikely to explain the entire signal. The observed line ratio between the two unresolved and the third line of the He I triplet is 2.8 ± 0.2, which strongly deviates from the value expected for an optically thin atmospheres. When interpreted in terms of absorption in the planetary atmosphere, this favors a compact helium atmosphere with an extent of only 0.2 planetary radii and a substantial column density on the order of 4 × 1012 cm−2. The observed radial velocities can be understood either in terms of atmospheric circulation with equatorial superrotation or as a sign of an asymmetric atmospheric component of evaporating material. We detect no clear signature of ongoing evaporation, like pre- or post-transit absorption, which could indicate material beyond the planetary Roche lobe, or radial velocities in excess of the escape velocity. These findings do not contradict planetary evaporation, but only show that the detected helium absorption in HD 189733 b does not trace the atmospheric layers that show pronounced escape signatures.

Mixing performance of an active mixer which mixes two fluids by three-dimensional flow surrounding a rotating shuttlecock rotor in continuous flow is numerically investigated. The mixer consists of a step contraction-expansion microchannel and a shuttlecock micro-rotor placed in the step. The obtained results show that mixing quality of solution does not depend on neither rotation speed nor mean velocity in the mixer, but rather on the ratio of tip paddle velocity of the rotor to the mean velocity (i.e. Strouhal number). Streaklines demonstrate that two fluids from the inlet can penetrate into the space between the paddles of the rotor, and then are mixed here before flowing to the exit channel. In small Strouhal number (∼10) cases, two fluids are twisted 90 degrees after passing the rotor region. In the other words, mixing in downstream flow behind the rotor takes place in the height instead of the width of the exit channel, which makes the mixer applicable for channels with high aspect ratio of the cross section. It is observed that mixing is dominantly enhanced in the rotor region and increasing Strouhal number results in faster mixing in the mixer.

AbstractWith the velocity de-projection technique, we derived the averaged 3 dimensional local velocity distribution using only the line-of-sight velocity for the 200,000 FGK type main-sequence stars from the LAMOST DR1 data. Taking the effective temperature as a proxy for age, we investigate the variation of the velocity distribution as a function of Teff and disk height within 100 < |z| < 500 pc. Using the mean velocities of the cool stars, we derive the solar motion of (U⊙, V⊙, W⊙)=(9.58±2.39, 10.52±1.96, 7.01±1.67) kms−1 with respect to the local standard of rest (LSR). Moreover, we find that the stars with Teff > 6000 K show a net asymmetric motion of 〈U〉~2 kms−1 and 〈W〉~3 kms−1 compared to the stars with Teff < 6000 K. And their azimuthal velocity increases when |z| increases. The asymmetric motion in the warmer stars is likely because they are too young and not completely relaxed.

An 8.4 million channel narrowband spectrum analyzer is nearing completion, and will be used to expand the frequency coverage of the ongoing search at Oak Ridge by a factor of 200. The new system – project META – will cover 420kHz at 0.05Hz resolution, utilizing a swept receiver to cancel the effect of the earth's rotation. The increased bandwidth will permit observation of CW beacons transmitted at magic frequencies in any of three preferred frames: the local standard of rest, the galactic barycenter, and the cosmic blackbody rest frame.

A search for the 126a hydrogen recombination line, with a rest frequency of 3248.713 MHz, has been made in the 19 sources listed in Table I using the Parkes telescope. The beamwidth was 6′ are and the frequency resolution 37 kHz. In the Table RCW refers to the Rodgers, Campbell and Whiteoak Atlas, W to the Westerhout catalogue, and the co-ordinate numbers to the Parkes Catalogue of Sources. In each case the ratio of the peak of the line to the continuum TL/TC, the half-intensity width Δv and the mean radial velocity to the local standard of rest, were determined. The related velocities observed in OH emission and absorption are also shown.

AbstractA discussion of radial velocities determined at the Radcliffe Observatory for 20 southern Cepheids and those found in the literature for another 20 stars lead to the conclusion that 15% of Cepheids are members of long period binary systems (1). The observational data were heterogeneous, few stars having been observed by a single observer or with the same instrument over a sufficient length of time to detect long period variations in the mean velocity.
