This article discusses issues related to the testing of listening comprehension in the context of the 1986 ACTFL proficiency guidelines (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, 1987). After a review of current research on listening comprehension and development of listening tests, four issues are singled out for more detailed consideration: the meaning ofcontextin listening testing, the concept of criterion-referenced tests, the notion of specific purposes in testing, and the use of technology in listening tests. A number of research issues are also discussed.

Low levels of listening comprehension skills in English is observed in many students. As a specific method, which can both cover mobile technologies and combine them with training, is the application of technology for podcasting and vidcasting/vodkasting. Podcasts and podcasts can provide authentic, up-to-date and easily accessible material, making them extremely useful when learning foreign languages. Their application makes learning freer and independent by introducing more interesting elements; gives greater freedom and independence to participants in the lesson. Students can listen to the material on the bus or while going to the gym.

With sophisticated multimedia technology, there is a renewed interest in the relationship between visual and auditory channels in assessing listening comprehension (LC). Research on the use of visuals in assessing listening has emerged with inconclusive results. Some learners perform better on tests which include visual input (Wagner, 2007) while others have found no difference in the performance of participants on the two test formats (Batty, 2015). These mixed results make it necessary to examine the role of using audio and video in LC as measured by L2 listening tests. The current study examined the effects of two different types of listening support on L2 learners’ comprehension: (a) visual aid in a video with input modified with redundancy and (b) no visuals (audio-only input) with input modified with redundancy. The participants of this study included 246 Spanish students enrolled in two different intermediate Spanish courses at a large Midwestern university who participated in four listening tasks either with video or with audio. Findings of whether the video serves as a listening support device and whether the course formats differ on intermediate-level Spanish learners’ comprehension will be shared as well as participants’ preferences with respect to listening support.

The authors attempt to analyze and summarize the scientific contributions of the members of the Ukrainian Historical Association, mostly published in The Ukrainian Historian journal in 1965–1991 and in the book format. At the same time, the main attention is paid not only to research issues but also to research tools of individual members of society, formed both by their professional training and socio-cultural environment of their lives and scientific creativity, which determined the level of research opportunities. The society was founded in 1965 on the initiative of the eminent researcher and organizer of science Lubomyr Roman Wynar (1932–2017), with the support of other scientists. The Ukrainian Historian journal, around which the unification took place, was founded by the scientist in 1963. The Association brought together researchers from different periods of the Ukrainian historical process, who belonged to several scientific generations, lived on different continents and, due to different life scenarios, did not always belong to the Western university environment, yet created the scientific product in Ukrainian and foreign languages. Based on correspondence and publications, the authors attempt to trace the reception of approaches to the formulation and elucidation of scientific problems, by members of the Western and Ukrainian Soviet Science. The article draws attention to the possibility of using source materials on the history of Ukraine, approaches to the study of sources, the creation of a source base for the study of events of the twentieth century by the Ukrainian scholars abroad. Particular attention is paid to the importance of the Ukrainian language in publications, and the possibility of interaction with the Western scientific world.
