The development of digital technologies creates the conditions for a new stage in the development and dissemination of audio culture. Radio plays have been replaced by audiobooks, audio podcasts, and audio series. The book market is experiencing an "audio explosion". There is a steady growth of interest in audiobooks, which compete with musical content. The authors of the article turn to the study of the current state of the culture of the "audible word". This article examines the audiobook reading of student readers, who were socialized under the conditions of the large-scale spread of digital technologies. The aim of the research: to consider audioreading in the context of leisure and educational practices of young people. The study is based on theoretical approaches that consider the phenomenon of audio consumption in modern media (V.Y. Bal', M.Y. Gudova, J.P. Melentieva, V. Erlmann, W. Hagen, A. Kassabian, J.F. Lehmann). The study examined students' perceptions of audiobook reading, its place in leisure and educational practices. The authors conducted a sociological study (December 2020) with the participation of 85 students in order to identify the perceptions of audiobook reading. Qualitative methodology of analysis of answers to open-ended questions was used for the study. The design questionnaire included questions on preferred types of reading, use of audiobook reading in educational and leisure practices, reasons for interest in audiobook reading and possibilities of audiobook reading as a type of educational content. The study identified students' preferences in the choice of book format (paper, electronic, audiobooks), students' ideas about the reasons for wide distribution of audiobooks, advantages and limitations of audiobooks, convenient contexts for daily life, practices of using audiobooks in educational and leisure activities. The authors consider the potential of audiobooks in the organization of educational and leisure activities of students.

During the classical period, Islamic education in the Indonesian archipelago (Nusantara) could not be separated from the literature used. One of the earliest pieces of literature that have been used in the Nusantara since the 16th century AD is Asmarakandi book by Abū al-Laiṡ as-Samarqandī. This research aims to explain the significance and characteristics of the Asmakarakandi book related to its function as a learning resource and its implications for the implementation of early Islamic education in the Nusantara. This research is a literature review using the integration-interconnection scientific paradigm, namely the historical approach in Islamic studies. This research finds that the Asmarakandi book is a popular basic level of Islamic education learning resource used by Muslim communities from different socio-cultural backgrounds. The distinctive format of the Asmarakandi book also shows implications regarding its function as a learning resource for Islamic education. First, the used of the Asmarakandi book makes Islamic education take place systematically, effectively, and efficiently. Second, the suitability of the material with the level of religious understanding of the early Muslim community in the Nusantara. Third, the dialogue-based book format can encourage the critical power of the reviewers. Furthermore, fourth, the transformation of the book into local texts helps the general public understand the content of the Asmarakandi book.

The modern Crimean Tatar literary language as a processed supra-dialectal version of the common language has a long history of formation and development. The foundation of the orthology, the rules for the use of linguistic units in speech, that is, combinations with the other, changes in spelling and pronunciation, were laid in the 20–30s of the last century. The subsequent tragic events (Great Patriotic War, total deportation of the Crimean Tatars and others) delayed the discussion of these problems at the official level for almost half a century. Separate proposals aimed at optimizing the norms of the literary language were made repeatedly in private. So, in the 70s of the last century U. Kukchi in Tashkent read lectures for writers and journalists on the state of the Crimean Tatar literary language, which in 1986 were published in a book format. With the beginning of the process of repatriation of the Crimean Tatars (the end of the 80s of the XX century), interest in the problem of the Crimean Tatar orthology has again intensified. Some of the textbooks published in the 30–40s last century were republished in a modified and supplemented way. In 2010, on the basis of the “Crimean Engineering and Pedagogical University” a draft of the spelling and pronunciation rules was developed and published using the new Latin alphabet. In the Crimean Tatar linguistics there is still no complete and correct set of different types of norms of the Crimean Tatar literary language. All the existing rules in new socio-political conditions are not legitimate.

Shared book reading - an adult reading to a child - supports children’s language development (e.g. Sénéchal, Pagan, & Leve, 2008). Most of what we know about shared book reading comes from studies of monolingual families, but shared book reading in bilingual families is different than in monolingual families. First, bilingual families must divide their book-reading time and resources between two languages. Second, bilingual parents may not be equally comfortable reading in both of their languages, which may influence how much and how well they read in each language. One recent study found that in bilingual families, parents own more books and read to their children more often in their stronger language (Gonzalez-Barrero et al., 2021). This could further disadvantage children’s oral language development in their weaker language. Bilingual books - books that tell a story in two languages - could be a useful tool to address this problem as they may provide additional support for reading in a weaker language. Yet little is known about how bilingual families engage with this format. This project addresses this gap by directly observing French-English bilingual parents and their preschool-aged children during shared reading with traditional single-language books and bilingual books. Shared reading interactions will be transcribed, coded and analyzed to assess the quantity and quality of parent-child interactions when reading 1) a bilingual or traditional single-language book and 2) in a stronger or weaker language.

The concluding chapter addresses ways in which the novel as genre has provoked and stimulated cognate activities outside its normative parameters as literary genre. These are registered most recently in the exorbitant rise of the “graphic novel.” This chapter goes back more than half a century to an earlier graphic format, the comic book, particularly the transformational treatment of novels in the Classics Illustrated publishing series from 1941 into the 1960s. The focus is on debates about mass culture in the Cold War setting of congressional committee investigations of juvenile delinquency and the comic book craze. A conspicuous feature of cultural preoccupations was with the status of the classic, on the one hand (epitomized in the Great Books publishing enterprise), and lowbrow dissemination of existing “classics” in comic book format. A full-scale assault on comics by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham was instrumental in chastening the industry into self-censorship. Ironically, the pedagogic claims behind Classics Illustrated were highlighted as a threat to the supposedly innocent “mind of the child,” revealing an abiding split between the cultural eminence accorded the classic and the aptitude of the target audience. The audience as consumer had been the commercial engine behind the rise of the novel, but the specter of the innocent child now conflated cultural symbolism with political agendas. We’ve inherited the trauma of that moment in the form of “political correctness” and “cancel culture,” with old (and new) novels continuing to be singled out as affronts to public decency, malignant records of bygone traumas, or obstreperous reminders of an imaginative fertility in the human imagination that won’t go away.

In issue 3 (7) of The Bible and Christian Antiquity a chronicle of doctoral theses defended at the Pontifical Biblical Institute of Rome (Pontificium Institutum Biblicum) for the years 2019-2020 was published.1 At the time of writing the chronicle most works had not yet been published or, in the pandemic, it was impossible to find information about their publication. By this time it is known that the theses of the following researchers are available to readers in book format: Francesco Filannino2, Fiacre G. Gambadatun3, Minyon Lee4 and Richard Francis Dsouza.

The rapid informatization process of the education system has created both the opportunities and the need for the use of e-books in education. E-books allow students to actively participate in the learning process, to personalize their learning, to gain new knowledge and to evaluate their own abilities. The e-textbook also enriches traditional forms of learning, encompassing a large amount of teaching and learning materials and stimulating the development of new teaching methods. In our opinion, it is time to switch to electronic and interactive formats in the development of electronic aids and textbooks in universities. One of the leading directions in the use of information and communication technologies today is the effective use of computers in educational activities. The main issue in implementing this activity is the selection of e-learning resources that will improve the quality of education.

This applied thesis project deals with a selection of fifty books published by the Visual Studies Workshop (VSW) Press in the 1970s and 1980s. The selection of books can be found in the Independent Press Archive that is currently held in the Research Center at the Visual Studies Workshop (VSW) in Rochester N.Y. The objective for this applied project is to facilitate access and describe the selection of books through the construction of a website. The thesis is divided into two parts, a website description of the books and an analytical paper. The website will allow for visual access to some important experiments with the book format, analog experiments that were revolutionary in their time. The analytical paper includes a discussion of the decisions made while selecting and digitizing the books for the website. This thesis project will add to the current knowledge about VSW Press by providing a snapshot view of how the book format was utilized by artists and students working at VSW at a particular moment in history, a historical period in which photography media and publication were undergoing a time of remarkable growth.
